TN: HR&CE approves construction of fish market near temple; funds to be taken from temple revenue

The HR&CE department has given permission for the construction of a fish market near the Kandasamy and Aadimottaiyamman temples in Chennai. This notice has caused a stir among the temple devotees and trustees and has also attracted the ire of the Opposition parties.

The Arulmigu Kandasamy and Aadimottaiyamman temples are located near Kuyampet, Chennai. The notice issued by the HR&CE department giving permission to demolish the old market building near the temple and construct a new fish market in the area at the cost of ₹ 1.55 crores, has gone viral on social media. The notice, dated 27.12.2021, stated that the proposals for the construction of the fish market were considered and in the presence of the HR&CE Commissioner Kumaragurubaran and was decided to go ahead with the plan.

According to this notice, the loan of ₹ 1.55 crores is to be obtained from Thiruthani Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy temple, Thiruverkadu Arulmigu Devikarumariamman temple and Maangadu Arulmigu Kamatchi Amman and Vaikunda Perumal Vagaiyara temple for the construction of this fish market. There has been strong opposition to this.

The Madras High Court has ruled that temple-revenue should only be used for temple-related activities. .Many devotees and temple activists are of the opinion that it is utterly unethical to borrow temple revenue and spend it on the construction of a fish market near the temple. Another criticism that has sparked is that setting up a fish market near the temple seems to be a planned conspiracy to tarnish the sanctity of the temple when even non-vegetarian Hindus are widely reluctant to go to the temple after consuming non-vegetarian food.
