Texas seige terrorist and member of Tablighi Jamaat Malik Faisal Akram was on MI5 radar

After the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) successfully terminated the Pakistani British hostage-taker, Malik Faisal Akram who had taken hostages in a synagogue in Dallas Texas, reports have now emerged that he was on the radar of Britain’s secret service, according to UK media reports on Tuesday (January 18).

Malik Faisal Akram had taken Jews who were praying in a synagogue as his hostages and had demanded the release of Pakistani neuroscientist Afia Siddiqui dubbed “Lady Al Qaeda” who is serving a life sentence in the US for her suspected of ties with Al Qaeda.

Now, news has emerged that Akram was on the radar of the MI5 intelligence service during the second half of 2020 and was assessed if he posed a security threat after suspicion around Islamist terrorism had reportedly been flagged.

According to ‘The Times’ newspaper, Akram was the subject of a “short lead investigation” for at least four weeks but the case was closed when security analysts assessed there was no indication that he presented a terrorist threat at that time.

However, Akram has been imprisoned four times, between 1996 and 2012, for a variety of offences, including violent disorder, harassment and theft and was banned from a British court for ranting about the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York in 2001.

The Exclusion Order at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court was made under Section 12 of the UK’s Contempt of Court Act over 20 years ago.

However, by the time he travelled to the US in late December 2021, Akram was not on the UK Home Office warnings index,  which is the watchlist that allows police at airports to intercept would-be passengers of concern.

Akram, whose family is based in the UK, said he had mental health problems and had stayed at homeless shelters before carrying out the siege in order to force the US to release Aafia Siddiqui.

Since he was not screened by the British, his arrival in the US did not raise any red flags. However, US President Joe Biden declared the incident as a terror act, and at the same time, he said Akram purchased the handgun used in the siege “on the street” which is a quip on the prevailing gun laws in the US.

More information has now emerged on the activities of Akram’from Blackburn and it seems had has had a long quarrel with his family after he moved to a more conservative strand of Islam, reportedly a member of the Tablighi Jamaat, the India based Islamic organisation involved in evangelizing the Islamic faith.

Akram was estranged from his wife and had six children and tried to impose his strict Islamic religious values on others and distanced himself from his family and had taken to Wahhabism, which is one of the most puritanical strains of Islam.

As of now, two teenagers who are under arrest in south Manchester in connection with the Texas siege are being questioned by England’s North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

Madras HC directs HR&CE to submit report on missing peacock idol in Kapaleeshwarar Temple

The Chennai High Court has directed the State government to file an inquiry and a supplementary report on the sudden disappearance of a Peacock statue at the Mylapore Kapaleeshwarar temple in Chennai.

The petition was filed by Rangarajan Narasimhan, who hails from Trichy. In his petition, he had written, “The peacock statue adorning the Siva linga with flowers in the Punnaivannanathar sanctum in Kapaleeshwarar temple was stolen. Instead, the statue that is now there has been designed to look like a snake in a peacock statue. This incident is also against the Agama of the temple.”

This petition was further heard by the Madras High Court. A pleader appeared on behalf of the HR&CE and said that the peacock statue is yet to be found and that investigation is underway for the same.

The judges then said, “Try to find the statue. At the same time the peacock statue that is now present, should be places just like the old one, adorning flowers on the Siva linga. Meanwhile, the delay in the investigation is unacceptable.” The court was then adjourned, keeping the next hearing on the 24th, asking the government to file a report on the current situation.

17 year old girl in TN commits suicide due to forced religious conversion at school, TOI ‘secularises’ incident in its coverage

Lalita (name changed), a 17 year old girl studying at Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Thirukattupalli near Thanjavur, committed suicide by drinking poison after she was allegedly tortured to convert to Christianity by the school for her to continue her studies. s School in Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district

Lalita hails from Vadugapalayam village in Ariyalur district. She was studying class 12 at the Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, a government aided Christian school located in Thirukattupalli, Thanjavur district. Her mother had died eight years ago and has been living at the St. Michael’s Girls Hostel near her school for the past five years.

The school had allegedly forced Lalita to convert to Christianity saying that she has to change her religion if she wanted to study further. But the girl refused.

While other children of the school went home for Pongal holidays, the school staff had forced Lalita to do chores like cleaning the toilet, washing dishes, etc. Unable to bear the humiliation, a disheartened Lalita attempted suicide by consuming pesticides used in gardens.

Lalita started continuosly vomitting from the night of January 9. As her health started deteriorating, the hostel warden took her to a nearby clinic for treatment.  As the vomiting continued, the warden of the hostel called her parents and asked them to take her home. When she went back home, Lalita had not disclosed that she had drunk pesticides.

She was admitted to the Tanjore Government Medical college hospital on January 15. It was found that almost 85% of her lungs were affected. Her kidney too had failed. She was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

She had disclosed that she consumed poison to the doctor only on January 18. However, the girl died shortly later.

A tweet shows the child’s last few words, where she describes the tortures she was put through in the school.

“My names is Lalita. They (school) had asked my parents in my presence if they can convert me to Christianity and help her for further studies. Since I didn’t accept, they kept scolding me.”, she says in the video. She also names one Rachael Mary who had allegedly tortured her.

On January 17, Lalita’s relatives gathered in front of the Thirukattupalli police station and protested saying that Lalita had consumed pesticides as the hostel warden Sagayamary had forced her to convert.

However, the Times of India in its coverage of the incident had completely ignored the religious conversion angle. It has not even mentioned the name of the school calling it as a ‘government aided higher secondary school in Michaelpatti villlage near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district’.

The headline given to the reportage has also been framed in a way that comes across as placing the responsibility of the unfortunate incident on the victim.

Despite the girl mentioning that she was forced to convert to Christianity in her dying declaration video, the Times of India has completely brushed off matter under the carpet.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Munnani and other Hindu organizations had come in support of the child. On speaking to VHP State Spokesperson Arumuga Kani, he said, “The Vishwa Hindu Parishad will not rest until justice given to the student Lalita. As a first step, VHP is to hold a hunger strike today (19th January) under the leadership of Thanjvur district secretary Muthuvel. We need to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again. Until then, we will protest.”

It is to be noted that a section of the media which had gone bonkers when a sexual harassment incident came to light in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) school, has bothered to give attention to the incident. Leaders of the DMK and its allies who had given elaborate statements during the PSBB incident are also on mute.

This is not the first incident of a crime that has happened in a Christian school. In the last week of December, a case was registered against the headmaster of a school run by Church of South India (CSI) – Tirunelveli for sexually harassing girl students.

“Recognize religiophobia against non-abrahamic faiths including Hinduism & Buddhism”: India at UN

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T S Tirumurti on Tuesday (January 18) termed the tendency of several UN members, driven by their political, religious, and other motivations, to label terrorism into categories such as racially motivated violent extremism and right-wing extremism as “dangerous”, saying this will take the world back to the pre-9/11 era of labeling them as “your terrorists” and “my terrorists”.

Highlighting some counter-terrorism trends and developments at the UN, their impact on the global counter-terrorism discourse, and India’s approach towards them, Ambassador T S Tirumurti told the International Counter-Terrorism Conference 2022 organised by the Global Counter-Terrorism Council that the first trend is what is being referred to as “emerging threats”.

“This is essentially a move to categorise terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism, based on the motivations behind such acts.

“In the past two years, several member states, driven by their political, religious and other motivations, have been trying to label terrorism into categories such as racially and ethnically motivated violent extremism, violent nationalism, right-wing extremism among others. This tendency is dangerous for several reasons,” he said.

“Second, this will take us back to the pre 9/11 era of labelling terrorists as “your terrorists” and “my terrorists” and erase the collective gains we have made over the last two decades. The Council should be on guard against new terminologies and false priorities that can dilute our focus,” he said.

Tirumurti was particularly insistent that is important to understand that in democracies, right-wing and left-wing are part of the polity primarily because they come to power through the ballot, reflecting the majority will of the people and also since democracy by definition contains a broad spectrum of ideologies and beliefs.

“We, therefore, need to be wary of providing a variety of classifications, which may militate against the concept of democracy itself. Fourth, even such labels are being given to so-called threats which are limited to certain national or regional contexts. The extrapolation of such national or regional narratives into a global narrative is misleading and erroneous. Such trends are neither global nor have any agreed global definition,” he said.

Tirumurti also talked about a resurgence of terrorist activities that has been witnessed both in their range and diversity as well as geographical space.

He reminded the members of the Security Council resolution on Afghanistan, adopted under India’s Presidency in August 2021, and said how it is vital that sympathisers of al-Qaida in the Taliban stop their support to al-Qaida and Islamic State (ISIS).

“Further, developments in Afghanistan are being closely watched in Africa by terrorist and radical groups. We need to ensure that they and other regional affiliates of ISIL and al-Qaeda don’t get emboldened and take advantage of armed conflict situations in and around the Sahel region and Lake Chad Basin area,” the Indian Ambassador said.

He highlighted that another trend which has of late become prominent is highlighting only certain religious phobias.

“The UN has highlighted some of them over the years, namely, those based on Islamophobia, Christianophobia and antisemitism – the three Abrahamic religions. These three find mentioned in the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. But new phobias, hatred or bias against other major religions of the world need to also be fully recognised.

“The emergence of contemporary forms of religiophobia, especially anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist and anti-Sikh phobias is a matter of serious concern and needs attention of the UN and all member states to address this threat. It is only then can we bring greater balance into our discussion on such topics,” Tirumurti said.

Ambassador Tirumurti also cautioned against the misuse of information and communication technology such as internet and social media for terrorist propaganda, radicalisation, and recruitment of cadre; misuse of new payment methods and crowdfunding platforms for financing of terrorism; and misuse of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes have emerged as the most serious threats of terrorism and will decide the counter-terrorism paradigm going forward.

Further, being a low-cost option and easily available, utilisation of drones and aerial/sub-surface platforms by terrorist groups for purposes such as intelligence collection, weapon/explosives delivery and targeted attacks have become a challenge for security agencies worldwide, Tirumurti said.

“In our context, we have witnessed terrorists using UAS (Unmanned aircraft system) to smuggle weapons and drugs across the borders and also launch terrorist attacks.

“Given the transnational nature of these treats, this warrants a holistic collaborative approach by member states, private sector, civil society organisations among others, as well as to strengthening support to financial watchdogs such as FATF to ensure that member states bring their counter-financing structures at par with international standards,” he added.

The school, which is a Christian institution, had forced Lalita to convert to Christianity. However, she refused to do the same.

Indonesia’s new capital ‘Nusantara’ is a tribute to the country’s ancient Hindu heritage

The Indonesian parliament has approved a bill to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to a jungled area of East Kalimantan and the new capital city will be called Nusantara (meaning- archipelago) encompasses an area of 180,000 hectares between the regencies of Kutai Kartanegara and Penajam Paser Utara.

The name for the new capital for the world’s most populous Muslim country dates back to an oath by the country’s revered hero Gajah Mada in 1336.

Gajah Mada was a powerful military leader and prime minister of Majapahit, a Javanese Hindu empire as President Joko Widodo wants to highlight the country’s motto of “unity in diversity”

Gajah Mada who was a powerful military leader is widely credited with the unification of the entire archipelago and taking the empire to its peak of glory.

In April last year, the initial design for the presidential palace complex and the new capital was revealed to the public and Balinese sculptor Nyoman Nuarta, who is famous for sculpting the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue was commissioned to design a structure.

In Indonesia, Garuda who is the divine bird and Vahana of the Hindu god Vishnu is the national emblem.

Nuarta design will now become the showpiece of the new Presidential Palace complex in the planned new capital city.

In August 2019, Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced had chosen two regencies in East Kalimantan as the location for Indonesia’s new capital.

Since independence in 1949, Jakarta has served as the administrative, financial and trade centre of Indonesia and the new state capital law, which stipulates funding and governance structure for the new capital, will enable President Joko Widodo to press ahead with the ambitious US$32 billion megaprojects.

“The government has conducted in-depth studies in the past three years and as a result of those studies the new capital will be built in part of North Penajam Paser regency and part of Kutai Kertanegara regency in East Kalimantan,” the President said.

“Jakarta has received overwhelming burdens as the centre of administration, business, finance, trade and services, as well as (housing) the country’s largest airport and seaport,” Joko added during the briefing.

The burden on Java island is also increasing because it is now home to 150 million people or 54 per cent of the population, he pointed.

This is not the first time a country in South East Asia has changed its capital, neighbouring Malaysia moved its administrative capital to Putrajaya in 2003, and Myanmar changed its capital to Naypyitaw in 2006.

Bhima Yudhistira, an economist with the Jakarta-based Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) said, “according to a study, the impact of the new capital project on addressing regional development issues is relatively small,”.

At present, Mallya lives in the property with his son Siddharth and his 95-year-old mother Lalitha.

‘Jan 26 is R-Day not Independence Day’: TN BJP chief Annamalai takes jibe at CM Stalin

Two days ago, news channels in Tamil Nadu started by peddling baseless allegations on the Central government for allegedly rejecting Tamil Nadu’s tableau for not having ‘prominent freedom fighters’. It was amplified through debates by mainstream Tamil news channel snowballing it into an Centre vs State issue.

Following this CM Stalin had written a letter to the Centre asking to include Tamil Nadu’s tableau in the Republic Day parade for this year.

However, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a letter to CM Stalin had pointed out that selection of tableaus is done after due process that is handled by a committee comprising of eminent persons from arts, culture, sculpting, etc. He said that Tamil Nadu’s tableau did not make it through the third round of the process. He also pointed out that Tamil Nadu’s tableau was present in the Republic Day parades of 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Despite this clarification being issued, CM MK Stalin said that the tableau would be taken across Tamil Nadu on 26th January. Reacting to this, Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai went onto tweet a set of suggestions for the CM, when he presents the tableau to the people of Tamil Nadu. “I respectfully suggest TN CM Thiru @mkstalin avl to keep in mind the following points when he takes the Tableau across TN on Jan 26th 1.The nationalist thoughts & strong spirituality espoused by Mahakavi Subramani Bharati. The Bharat that he dreamed is the mantra for @BJP4India.  Mahakavi Subramanya Bhartiyar stood for everything against what @arivalayam practices now. I’m sure he would like a Tilak in his forehead when you showcase him around. He always was proud of his Tamilian & Bhartiya Identity,” he said.

He then went onto give a few more points about Veeramangai Velu Naachiyar and VO Chidambaram as well.

He also took a jibe at CM Stalin who had earlier made faux pas confusing the dates of Independence Day and Republic Day.
