Mahatma Gandhi’s great granddaughter imprisoned for defrauding businessman in South Africa

Lata Ramgobin, the great granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi has been sentenced to 7 years in prison in South Africa amidst defrauding allegations. The 56 year old was accused in a 6 million rand cheating case by a famous businessman, and was recently tried in court. She was found to be guilty on Monday and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The trial against Lata started in 2015 for cheating a businessman of 6 million dollars. Following trials at that time, she was released by paying a bail amount of 50,000 rand.

The recent trial accused of cheating Maharaj, director of the New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors, of 2.6 million rand. She had asked for a loan to him saying that she was importing linen. She was accused of having allegedly forged invoices saying that linen containers that she had ordered were being shipped in from India to South Africa in order to fool investors. This accusation was put forth by Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“She said she was experiencing financial difficulties to pay for import costs and customs and she needed the money to clear the goods at the harbour,” NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said on Monday.

“She advised him (Maharaj) that she needed R6.2 million. To convince him, she showed him what she claimed was a signed purchase order for the goods.  Later that month, she sent him what seemed to be a NetCare invoice and delivery note as proof that the goods were delivered and payment was imminent,” she said. Lata Ramgobin “further sent him confirmation from NetCare’s bank account that payment had been made”, Kara said.

Watch: Man marries for the 37th time in the presence of 28 wives, 35 children and 126 grandchildren

In a viral video, an old man is claimed to be getting married for the 37th time amidst the presence of his family.

The video doing the rounds on Twitter, has left many baffled with the man’s bizarre innings in life. It is not known where the incident happened but the attire worn by people in the video suggests that it must have happened in a country in the middle-east.

The 45-second clip was shared by IPS officer Rupin Sharma on Twitter with the caption, “BRAVEST MAN….. LIVING. 37th marriage in front of 28 wives, 135 children and 126 grandchildren.”

It is to be noted that this is not the first time that something like this has made the news. In 2020, the news of a man from Taiwan marrying and divorcing the same woman time after time for four times in a span of 37 days made the news and made many an eyeball pop.

This man had done so in order to get an extended paid leave, which was soon found out by the bank that he had been working for. Infuriated, they had only granted him 8 days of leave for his first marriage. Following this, he sued his employer and the bank was fined NT$20,000 (Rs 52,800) in October 2020.

Sweden pitches SAAB Gripen as India’s choice for fighter aircraft to replace its old fleet

As India is gearing up to purchase  114 fighter aircraft to replace its old fleet, the Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist on Tuesday (June 8) made a pitch to sell SAAB’s Gripen fighter aircraft to India to replace its old fleet.

In March, during a virtual summit, Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven had raised the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked New Delhi to choose the Gripen, which is in contention with France’s Rafale, the American F/A-18 and F-21, MiG-35 and Sukhoi-35 of Russia and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Swedish company SAAB wants the estimated ₹1.3 lakh crore deal, one of the biggest defence deals in recent time to make the fighter jets in India with the promise to build a production line in India.

Addressing an event hosted by the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers Hultqvist said, “The Make in India concept provides excellent opportunities for cooperation that would serve both our countries’ interests. The ongoing multirole fighter aircraft procurement where the Gripen fighter concept offered by SAAB is a good example of transfer of technologies and is supported 100% by the Swedish government,”.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also pitched for more Swedish investment in India and said, “FDI liberalization and improved ‘ease of doing businesses’ has already attracted top defence companies of the world and have Joint Ventures in India,” Singh said in his speech. “Further, the Government of India has allowed FDI up to 74% through automatic route and up to 100% through the government route wherever it is likely to result in access to modern technology,” he added.

“I once again take this opportunity to invite Swedish firms to invest in the dedicated Defence Corridors of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu where they can benefit greatly from the unique incentives being offered by the State Governments and the availability of a highly-skilled workforce in India,” the minister added.

Rajnath Singh also talked about the Foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can set up manufacturing facilities individually or partner with Indian companies through a Join Venture (JV) or technology agreement to capitalize on the ‘Make in India’ opportunity, and said. “There is a lot of scope for Sweden and Indian defence Industries for co-production and co development. Indian industry can also supply components to Swedish Industries. Swedish firms such as SAAB already have a major presence in India and I am confident that other Swedish firms will find India as a major investment destination for Defence Manufacturing,”.

An entire hill in TN encroached by Christian missionaries for years, Hindu Munnani takes matter into its hands

The Hindu Munnani has filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking the recovery of Vajragiri Hill in the Acharapakkam area of Chengalpattu district amid allegations that Christian missionaries are occupying about 60 acres of land and carrying out various manoeuvres to prevent Hindus from entering the hill where there exists an ancient Sivan Temple.

The Vajragiri hill is located about 95 km from Chennai along the Chennai-Trichy highway near Melmaruvathur. From the distance, one can see a dilapidated building on the top of a hill with ‘Siva Siva’ written on a board. As the eye crosses, one can see a huge cross and the line ‘Mariye Vaazhga’ (Long live Mary) written in Tamil on the hill.

How was the Church built on this hill?

In 1965, Puspam Adigalar, a Catholic priest, became the co-founder of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Acharappakam. He installed a statue of Mary on a nearby hill. No construction work was done on the site until 2004.

Bakiya Regis, who took over as the as priest in 2004, began construction around the statue on the hill. Areas of the hill and paths were occupied and buildings were erected on the hillside poromboke land belonging to the Pallipettai panchayat. Paths were blocked for cattle rears who used to let their cattles graze in the pasteurs of the hill.

Since 2005, the ‘new moon worship’ of the Church started gaining popularity. At the same time, opposition from local Hindus began to grow. Whenever they complained, the Revenue Department would send a warning notice which would later get settled through ‘negotiations’ with officials.

Raja, a resident of Sothupakkam filed an RTI to find out the area encroached by the Church.  The Revenue Department had replied that only 4 acres were encroached. However, he found that more than 60 acres was found to be encroached when he visited the hill. Following this, he filed a case at the Madras High Court.

The sorry state of the temple

Today, it is unknown to many that there exists an ancient Sivan temple on the hill. The main Siva deity is called Pasupathiswarar. This temple is now allegedly being occupied by Christian missionaries.  Locals complaint that there are a lot of activities that the missionaries do to prevent Hindus to go to the temple at the hill.

The builders of this temple made two ways to go to this temple several hundred years ago. One can reach the top of the mountain by steep stairs. The other is by a vehicular path behind the hill.

But, the Christians have now built a huge church at the top and bottom of the hill. They have also occupied the entire hill by placing crosses across the mountain.

The church administration has set up a decorative entrance gate at the top of the hill where there is a driveway to the Pashupatiswarar Temple. The devotees who go to pray at the Pasupathiswara Temple above have to enter the ornamental arch of the church. But, the road is currently barricaded with barbed wire.

The devotees of the temple tried to set up a temporary path. But, the Christian missionaries have vandalised that too by dumping rubbish. Locals say that the Christians priests and missionaries are blocking the way to the hill in order to take control of the entire hill.

Some of the local youth from the area have been making all possible arrangements to rebuild the Hindu temple. They Siva Siva hoarding that flashes during the night was set up with the help of local Hindu organizations and well wishers. But, it has been impossible for them along to confront the Christian priests who have the power to grease hands and influence the government authorities.

They decided to put a new borewell on the hill and even build water tanks. But the Forest Department stopped them from implementing, saying that no action should be taken without consulting the Forest Department on the land owned by them. However, Hindu organizations have been pointing out the double standards of the Forest Department which has remained a mute spectator to the encroachments made by the Church.

It has been reported that the missionaries have taken the hill on a 99-year lease and this claim was backed by the pastors of the Church.

In light of this, the Hindus in Acharapakkam have demanded that the Pasupathiswarar temple on the hill should be reclaimed immediately. Here are some of the demands placed by the local Hindu organization:

1. The Vajragiri hill belonging to the Pashupatiswara temple should be protected from Christian missionaries.

2. The path to the temple at the top of the hill should be paved. Similarly, the decorative arch built by the Christians should be removed and the entrance gate should be built to Pasupathiswara.

3. The boulders on Vajragiri Hill should not be broken and sold.

4. Christian missionaries should not be involved in proselytizing activities in the area.

5. Action should be taken against those who damaged the electric lights and electrical boards installed in the Pasupathiswarar temple.

6. The barbed-wire fences erected by Christian missionaries must be removed.

7. The Forest Department should provide an appropriate explanation for the priests’ claim that the lease was for 99 years.

It was in this context that the Hindu Munnani officials have filed a case in the Supreme Court alleging that the management of the Mazhaimalai Mata Church had expropriated outlying land (about 60 acres). In this case, the judge directed the district administration to survey the area and hand over the report to the court within 8 weeks . An inquiry was held in this regard on June 4th at the Magistrate’s Office in Madurantakam.

One month of Vidiyal

The newly formed DMK government under Chief Minister MK Stalin completed the first month on June 7. Just a day after taking oath as Chief Minister, MK Stalin imposed a full lockdown (something that he was against just a week before the results) for a period of 14 days starting from May 10 to May 24.

Back then he had said that the lives and livelihoods in the state are not in a position to bear the brunt of another lockdown imposed by the government.

However, the lockdown announced by Chief Minister MK Stalin has been in continuation for more than a month now.

The DMK in its manifesto had announced a slew of populist measures some of which were part of its manifesto. They had promised that that they would be providing ₹4000 as cash relief to all rice card holders in view of the pandemic induced lockdown. However, only ₹2000 has been paid and that too hasn’t reached many people. It had decreased the price of Aavin milk by ₹3 which is bound to push the state owned cooperative into loss in the long run. The government had also announced free travel for women in state transport, a department that is already ailing and struggling to meet finances.

Speaking of finances, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan who had criticized the AIADMK government for the state’s financial condition, has been making news for matter unrelated to his portfolios. He has been busy picking fights and blocking people on Twitter apart from indulging in singing praises about himself and his lineage. His only achievement seems to have been selling Tamil Nadu government’s securities for ₹3000 crores as stocks.

Image

Apart from this, a lot has happened on ground that keeps reminding one that it is the DMK that is in power. Here is a compilation of all such incidents that characterizes the DMK regime. Let us start with the recent ones:

1. DMK cadres put up a stage right in front of a Perumal Temple in Chennai’s Royapettah area and distributed chicken and mutton biryani to people on the occasion of Karunanidhi’s birth anniversary. DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran and Thousand Lights MLA Ezhilan Naganathan presided over the biryani distribution event.

2. A bakery owned by AIADMK cadre in Vadippatti in Madurai district was completely smashed to smithereens. Police arrested 4 persons including a DMK cadre named Ashok.

3. A piece of government land in Melmonavur village of Vellore district  was encroached by a DMK cadre and was later reclaimed following complaints by locals.

4. Misa Pandian, the former Deputy Mayor of Madurai and a DMK office bearer, went to the Jaihindpuram police station with his relative and intimidated Inspector Sethumani Madhavan to file a complaint against the person he didn’t like.

5. Patients and general public in Tiruvallur district alleged that medical equipment, including oxygen cylinders allotted to government hospitals, were being diverted to Indira Hospital, which is owned by DMK MLA Rajendran

6. Over 60 families have been rendered homeless in Thiruvottriyur due to atrocities committed by DMK cadres in the area.

7. Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the Member of Legislative Assembly from Harbour Constituency while speaking at an event in Chennai attacked the north Indian community saying that they keep getting richer and richer because of Dravidian parties and not the BJP. He also commented on their voting preferences saying that they keep supporting BJP out of illusion.

8. DMK cadres intimidated the head of a panchayat council, who was providing corona relief funds to the public, in the village of Pudupakkam near Ponneri in Tiruvallur district.

9. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Sakkarapani threatened to take severe action on small traders and vendors for rise in vegetable prices soared as people flocked to markets ahead of the strict lockdown.

10. A DMK cadre assaulted a Biryani shop owner in Nungambakkam, Chennai.

11. The Tamil Nadu government’s Department of Industries has issued an advertisement for land acquisition to build a crude oil refinery. The land to be acquired includes 2.37 acres of land belonging to the Agastheeswarar Swamy and Srinivasa Perumal Swamy temples in Narimanam, Nagapattinam district. These 2.37 acres are agricultural lands. A 9 MMTPA crude oil refinery of the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited would be set up in the Narimanam Village in Nagapattinam district. The DMK, when it was in opposition, was a staunch opponent of methane and gas projects. But now, it is not only acquiring agricultural land but also setting up a crude oil refinery in the temple land.

12. DMK cadres threatened daily wage workers at the Kumalam Paddy Procurement centre to not work there as their men would come to work.

13. A drunk DMK cadre threatened a female police officer for stopping his car for checking.

14. DMK cadres arrived and stopped Vaniyambadi AIADMK MLA Senthilkumar from providing corona relief funds, claiming that new government is that of the DMK.

15. SI Malarvizhi was transferred from Mayilankkarai to Attur Women’s Police Station after her attempt to apprehend DMK cadres who bought additional liquor.

16. A traffic sub-inspector in Thanjavur who was involved in an argument with a DMK cadre was transferred overnight to the Department of Armed Reserve Police.

17. DMK cadres identified as Aashiq, Siyad, Nawab, Sagul, and Shaukath in Madhukarai Municipality took to throwing crackers at the home of an AIADMK cadre Josephn and burnt the poster of AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa that was placed outside his house. The explosion caused injuries to some of the members in the household.

18.  DMK MLA from Mannargudi TRB Raja was caught using mobile phone in the Assembly violating the protocol.

19. Ramalingam, the DMK MLA from Namakkal, absconded from the spot after relatives of a COVID patient tried to express their grievance about the unavailability of beds and oxygen.

20. A complaint has been lodged against a DMK office bearer in Tirupattur district for usurping land by placing a generator in the premises of Tirupattur Lion’s Club.

21. A hygiene worker belonging to Royapuram, Chennai was attacked by a DMK office bearer.

22. A hotel belonging to an AIADMK cadre in Nilakottai was attacked and demolished by DMK cadres.

23.  An ‘Amma Unavagam’ located in J.J Nagar near Maduravoyal, Chennai was attacked by DMK goons. Men belonging to the DMK tore down the board with title ‘Amma Unavagam’ and also broke the pictures of the late AIADMK supremo.

24.  DMK goons in Karur district ransacked a shop belonging to an AIADMK cadre causing extensive damage to the property along with a person getting injured seriously.

25, Last but not the least. Power cuts has been on the rise across the state reminding people of the dreaded years of 2006-11 when the state witnessed power cuts for more than 8 hours.

As several media outlets supportive of the DMK say, ‘This is just a trailer. Main picture is yet to come’, which we will be witnessing in the next 5 years.

Corruption in sand quarry allocation? Leaked audio allege involvement of DMK Durai Murugan and his son Kathir Anand

Duraimurugan, the Minister of Water Resources, has come under criticism for allegedly handing a sand quarry contract to sand baron Sekhar Reddy and his aides in exchange for a bribe of crores of rupees.

Sand baron Sekarreddy and his aides Ramachandran from Pudukottai, Karikalan from Dindigul, and Rathinam from Dindigul were instrumental in leasing the sand quarries permitted in Tamil Nadu’s rivers. Sekhar Reddy and his associates were accused of getting licenses for sand quarry illegally, bribing government officials, and driving up the price of sand to an all-time high.

A leaked audio clip of a person believed to be the assistant to water resource minister Duraimurugan speaking with a broker regarding sand quarry contracts given to three firms linked to Sekhar Reddy for a bribe of 300 crores is circulating on social media.

The recording, however, does not reveal whether the transactions took place in Duraimurugan’s residence in Kotturpuram, Chennai, or at Gandhi Nagar in Katpaadi.

Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that these arrangements were made through Duraimurugan’s son and Vellore MP Kathir Anand.
