“Pak envoy to US ‘a bona fide terrorist sympathizer’”: Congressmen Scott Perry

The government of Pakistan suffered a huge embarrassment when US Congressman Scott Perry called the new Ambassador Masood Khan a ‘jihadist’ and ‘a bona fide terrorist sympathizer’ who is ‘working to undermine our interests in the region’.

Already, the US State Department has put on hold Khan’s appointment as the new ambassador because he is one of the leading voices in Pakistan that is calling for the release of convicted Islamic terrorists Aafia Siddiqui.

Pakistan appointing Masood Khan as its ambassador to the United States comes just weeks after a British Pakistani took four Jews as hostages in a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, USA, on January 15.

The demand of the hostage-taker was for the release of convicted Pakistani terrorist Aafia Siddiqui. Siddiqui, also known as ‘Lady al Qaeda’, who is is serving an 86-year U.S. prison sentence for her 2010 conviction for shooting at soldiers and FBI agents.

Congressman Scott Perry is a member of the Freedom Caucus, also known as the House Freedom Caucus, a congressional caucus consisting of conservative Republican members of the United States House of Representatives.

In the letter to President Joe Biden, Congressman Perry said, “While I am encouraged that the State Department has reportedly placed a pause on approving Masood Khan as the new Ambassador from Pakistan, a pause is not enough. I urge you to reject any diplomatic credentials presented to you by Masood Khan and reject any effort by the Government of Pakistan to install this jihadist as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States,” the letter read.

Perry called Pakistan a ‘super terrorist state’, and in his letter, he stated, “A litany of examples accompanies Mr. Khan’s perverse attachment to Islamic terrorism, which makes it exceedingly obvious that Pakistan has embraced its identity as a super terrorist state” and his appointment would undermine the “security of our Indian allies,”.

Masood Khan has a long history of being a terrorist sympathiser and has consistently lent his support to terrorists and terror organisations. He even asked youths to emulate Kashmiri terrorist Burhan Wani who was waging Jihad in India and was nutrilised by the security forces.

The Congressman said, “In 2019, Khan willingly appeared alongside Fazlur Rehman Khalil, a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) who is the founder of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), a US-designated foreign terrorist organization.”

Cauvery Calling enables farmers to plant 2.1 crore saplings in 2 years

During the COVID pandemic, Cauvery Calling enabled farmers in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to plant a record 2.1 crore trees. 1,25,000 farmers spanning the two states have adopted tree-based farming on their lands, Shri. Tamilmaran, Coordinator, Cauvery Calling told reporters at a press conference at the Coimbatore Press Club today.

He said that the motorcycle rally undertaken by Sadhguru, Founder- Isha Foundation, in 2019 to create awareness and build consensus for cohesive action to revitalize river Cauvery had yielded extremely positive results- farmers in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka began showing interest in the tree-based farming model as a result of the rally, he said. In addition, field volunteers of the Cauvery Calling Movement have been going from village to village in the river basin districts in the two states to educate farmers about the economic and ecological benefits of planting trees. Shri. Tamilmaran said that Cauvery Calling volunteers visit farmlands of those who express interest in tree-based farming to study soil properties and irrigation facilities before recommending suitable saplings. He said special field training sessions are also held for farmers on the premises of successful model farms to encourage them to embrace the model.

Other on-ground activities include plantation drives to mark birth anniversaries and remembrance days of prominent agronomists such as Thiru Nammazhvar Aiya, Thiru Nell Jayaraman and Thiru Maram Thangasamy, he said. The highly successful drives have enabled the planting of more than 1 lakh saplings on each occasion including nationally celebrated days such as Gandhi Jayanti and Vana Mahotsavam. Awareness programs and sapling planting events have also been held in 650 farmlands across Tamil Nadu.

Shri. Tamilmaran said a total of 6.2 crore saplings have been planted till date through various Isha environmental projects including the Cauvery Calling  Movement and added that 32 Isha nurseries operating in Tamil Nadu produce saplings through natural methods to supply the demand. Training sessions are also held for those interested in starting their own nurseries.

Shri. Tamilmaran also spoke about the online efforts of the Movement to broaden its reach through social media. He said about 20 lakh volunteers are involved in this effort. Their activities include managing 128 WhatsApp farmer groups through which accurate and relevant information is disseminated. Every month 4 lakh farmers get information about various government schemes and agro-forestry programs through social media. He said 890 rural youths have been assigned to interact directly with farmers.

Shri. Valluvan, a farmer from Coimbatore said, “Planting trees between coconut trees, my farm has increased soil fertility. The ground water level has risen and the demand for water has decreased. Yield and product quality have improved.” Farmer Mr. Vanjimuthu said “I heard about the activities of the Cauvery Calling Movement and planted saplings 2 years ago. Now the trees are well grown, which is very satisfying.”

VVS Aiyar: The Revolutionary Who Lit Up The Fire Of Nationalism In The Tamil Land

While the history of our nation’s freedom struggle is a concocted version glorifying only two names and blacking out the real heroes who have sacrificed their entire lives for their motherland, the corresponding narration in Tamilnadu has also meticulously eschewed with congenital animosity, a particular section of the society, viz., brahmins who have contributed a lot not only for the freedom fight, but in other fields as well. They were either completely erased and when it was not possible, their contributions trivialised. Just a few names for instance: VVS Aiyar, Neelakhanta Brahmachari, Bhashyam alias Arya, Vanchinathan, S Satyamurthi, A Vaidyanatha Iyer, Bharatiyar, CV Raman, Ramanujam, Viswanathan Anand, Sundar Pichai.

Let us look at one of them now. The man who infused the revolutionary spirit in the Tamil land.

Varahaneri Venkatesa Subramania Aiyar.

Early Life

VVS Aiyar was born on April 2, 1881, in a middle class brahmin family in Varahaneri village in Tiruchi. He completed his graduation with B.A in History, Politics and Latin from St. Joseph’s College. He studied Law and passed the Pleader examination from the University of Madras in the year 1902. Later he practised as a Junior Lawyer or Pleader in the District courts of Tiruchi. In 1906, he went to Rangoon, and practised as a junior in the Chambers of an English Barrister. From Rangoon, he left for London in 1907, enrolled in Lincoln’s Inn with a view to becoming a Barrister at Law.

During his academic span he has mastered many languages like Tamil, Sanskrit, English, French and Latin. He was also a good wrestler, sharp shooter, proficient in all branches of athletics including swimming.

At London, his wanted to study English music and learn English dance also. Till then he was an intelligent, light hearted, fashionable youth. But, all of a sudden, as it happens in film stories, destiny played its part at that juncture. He met Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

VVS Aiyar And Savarkar

At the end of the conversation with Savarkar, there was a metamorphosis in his life. He became an activist in the Indian freedom struggle.  He became the right hand of Savarkar in organizing the Indian Home Rule League and giving training for a violent uprising for India’s liberation.

VVS was the man who stood by Savarkar in all his endeavours. He was inspired by Savarkar and in turn inspired Savarkar. Savarkar, VVS Aiyar and TSS Rajan (who later joined the Congress and also served as Minister in Madras Presidency) were the trio who made India House a hub of revolutionary activities.

One of the seminal works of Savarkar, ‘The Indian War of Independence’, was translated from Marathi to English under the supervision of VVS Aiyar. When the British Government arrested Savarkar for sedition, it was Aiyar who with the help of Irish revolutionaries attempted to recue him from prison in London.

Aiyar together with Shyamji Krishnavarma and Madam Bikaji Cama also made plans to free Savarkar at Marseilles when he was being ferried in SS Morea from London to India.

Aiyar’s Activities In India

In 1910, Aiyar resigned his membership of Lincoln’s Inn. A warrant was issued by the British for his arrest and Aiyar escaped to Paris. But he had no wish to remain in Paris as a political exile. From there, Aiyar sailed to Pondicherry. En route, from Rome, he sent a copy of Dante’s Divine Comedy by post to Mandayam Srinivasachari in Pondicherry. On arrival, Aiyar, disguised as a bearded Muslim, landed up in Srinivasachari’s house and asked if he had received a copy of the Divine Comedy. The name of the book was the password for identity! Thus, he managed to return to India, albeit to French Pondicherry, and there he met Subramaniya Bharathi and Aurobindo. He remained in Pondicherry for ten years till the end of the First World War

In Pondicherry, Aiyar was involved in the plot to assassinate Ashe, the Collector of Tirunelveli. Vanchinathan who assassinated General Ashe was his disciple and it was Aiyar who trained him in the use of pistol.

After the end of World War I, VVS Aiyar returned to Chennai and functioned as the Editor of the journal Desabhaktan. In September 1921 he was arrested for sedition and sentenced to 9 months imprisonment.

Aiyar’s Contribution To Tamil Literature

Now, by the way, if a question is asked, ‘Who is the father of modern Tamil short stories?’, most of us will invariably come out names like Kalki or Pudumaippithan, depending on the taste of the individual. While both of them deserve a distinctive place in the annals of literary history of modern Tamil, the correct answer surprisingly is VVS Aiyar!

It is said that a busy man finds time for everything. His love of literature being so intense, in the midst of freedom struggle and with the Damocles sword of arrest threatening him every moment during his exile in Pondicherry, he translated Tirukkural into English. Apart from that, he wrote hundreds of short stories. He has also translated one of the short stories composed by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali into Tamil, titled Kapulivala.

And it was in prison that VVS Aiyar wrote his magnum opus – a study of Kamban’s Ramayana. He wanted, as was his personal trait, to infuse a sense of courage and heroism in people and towards this end he wrote a number of biographies of freedom fighters and warriors. A biography of Garibaldi, the Italian patriot, was written by him as a serial in ‘India’. He did a biography of Guru Govind Singh also.

Aiyar died in 1925 by drowning at the Papanasam falls, while trying to save his daughter Subhadra who was struggling in the water. However, many people believed that his death was mysterious and not natural! May be it will never come to light!

On his death, Vinayak Damodar Sarvakar, Aiyar’s comrade in arms, paid a moving tribute in the journal, Mahratta:

“Heavy griefs have often embittered our life; but none heavier than what thy sudden death caused, oh friend, ever taxed our capacity to endure. Memories of those momentous years and trying days rise in a flood and, struggling to find a vent, keep knocking at the gates of our heart. How we wish we could have spoken of them all and recited our reminiscences. But our lips must remain sealed. How we long to write of the goodness and gentleness of disposition – how when betrayed thou stood unshaken, how thou served them who owned thee not and how thou suffered when unbeknown and modest, and made not the slightest mention of it when thou got known – how we long to write of it all. But our pen is a broken reed. The noble story of thy life must for the time being, nay, perhaps for all time to come, remain untold. For while those who can recite it are living, the time to tell it may not come, and when the time comes, when all that is worth telling will no longer remain suppressed and will eagerly be listened to, the generation that could have recounted it might have passed away. Thy greatness, therefore, must stand undimmed but unwitnessed by man like the lofty Himalayan peaks. Thy services and sacrifices must lie buried in oblivion as do the mighty foundations of a mighty castle.

Parasuram Sharma is a retired bank officer and an octogenarian whose interests include Sanathana Dharmam, Samskritam, history and politics.

TN police arrest man who complained about religious conversion happening in his area

Tamil Nadu police on the wee hours of Saturday (January 29) arrested a man identified as Ganesh Babu from Pudukottai district who had given a complaint about religious conversion happening in his area.

Ganesh Babu hails from Thimmiyampatti near Iluppur in Pudukottai district. On 21 January 2022 at around 6 30 PM, two unidentified women had come to his home saying that they were from the church and had come to spread the ‘gospel of Jesus’, he had stated in his letter to the Pudukottai Superintendent of Police which has been accessed by The Commune.

The two missionary ladies had allegedly told him that his family would be ‘taken care by Jesus’ if they convert to Christianity and had given them some Christian books. This was resisted by Ganesh Babu and his family. He told the ladies that they are Hindus and that their clan deity (kuladeivam) was the Malayadikaruppar asking the ladies to vacate his house immediately. A heated brawl ensued when the two missionary ladies had derogated Hindu gods as ‘stones’, ‘satans’, and ‘ghosts’, his letter to the SP read.

When Ganesh Babu had told them that he would inform the police, the missionary ladies had allegedly told him that ‘he cannot even pluck a hair’ as they have been doing this for a long time particularly in the nearby villages of Irundhirapatti, Mettupatti, Kattakutti, Irappoosal, Iluppur, Melappatti, Navampatti, etc. and none belonging to those villages could do anything to them. They had also allegedly threatened to kill him.

After they left his house, there was a commotion inside the village when he found that the missionary ladies had beeng going door-to-door and indulging in conversion activities. The two ladies were held by a few people belonging to the village as they had reportedly given chocolotes and toys to kids in the neighbourhood and spoke ill about Hinduism, the complaint letter by Ganesh Babu to the SP mentioned.

Ganesh Babu along with a few others from his village informed the Iluppur police and the two missionary ladies were handed over to Inspector Ushanandhini and Sub-Inspector Rex Stalin.

On January 27, when Ganesh Babu and members from the village had gone to ask the status of the complaint, the police had told them that they’ve received a complaint against them as well and asked them to give a written complaint from their side which they did on January 28. When Ganesh and his relative Kumar had gone to get the CSR copy, they were told to collect it next day morning.

At around 1 AM on January 28, the Deputy Superintendent, Sub-Inspector and Inspector along with 4 constables had come and took Ganesh Babu in a jeep.

The police officials allegedly asked him to withdraw the complaint filed and even threatened to slap false cases under various acts including the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Act.

Ganesh Babu had told that he would not withdraw the complaint and was ready to proceed legally for the complaints given against him. He was let go off but was asked to come the next day at 11 AM to withdraw the complaint. Ganesh Babu was later arrested on the wee hours of January 29.

Ganesh Babu has written a complaint to the Pudukottai District Superintendent of Police pleading for action against the two missionary ladies and the Deputy Superintendent Arulmozhi Arasu and Inspector Ushanandhini for abuse of power.

In light of this, the people of the village along with Hindu organizations are protesting against the arrest of Ganesh Babu.

This article is based on the complainant’s letter to the SP which has been accessed by The Commune.
