28% GST On Online Gaming From 1 October 2023

In a move to regulate online gaming, Sanjay Agarwal, Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), has announced that India will implement a 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate on online gaming starting from October 1, regardless of whether these activities involve games of skill or chance, as reported by The New Indian Express.

Following recent amendments to GST laws passed in the Lok Sabha on August 11, during its final session of the monsoon season, the government plans to tax online gaming as part of broader efforts to bring various sectors under the GST framework and streamline tax collections. The two GST laws were passed with a voice vote and minimal debate.

CBIC Chairman Sanjay Agarwal stated, “We are prepared to implement a 28% GST rate on online gaming from October 1 with the consent of all the states. The law regarding the GST rate on online gaming will need to be passed by the state assemblies. Show cause notices to some online gaming companies are part of the legal process.”

These amendments pertain to the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Central Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which will impose a 28% GST for online gaming, casinos, and horse racing. This move aims to provide much-needed clarity regarding the taxation of supplies in casinos, horse racing, and online gaming, as asserted by the central government. During the 50th meeting of the GST Council on July 11, a 28% GST rate was recommended for the full face value of Casinos, Horse Racing, and Online Gaming.

To ensure strict compliance, the GST Council has recommended specific provisions in the IGST Act, 2017. This will establish the liability to pay GST on the supply of online money gaming from foreign suppliers to Indian customers, along with measures for blocking access to any related information in case of non-compliance.

It’s worth noting that almost all online gaming companies that have experienced growth in recent years are based offshore. Furthermore, it is concerning that prominent athletes and actors are promoting online gambling, which can have a serious impact on young people.

Times Of India Chief Cartoonist Publishes Cartoon Mocking Hindus In Response To Ujjain Tragedy

Today, on September 28, 2023, Sandeep Adhwaryu, the chief cartoonist of the Times of India, posted a cartoon concerning the Ujjain rape case, depicting a broad portrayal of Hindus as being indifferent and ignorant towards the rape.

The cartoon depicted a harrowing incident that unfolded in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, involving a 12-year-old girl who had been raped and was in a distressed state, desperately seeking assistance as she wandered from one house to another on the streets. This distressing video of the incident spread widely on social media, prompting a justified public outcry.

However, the cartoon of Sandeep Adhwarya was high on propaganda with many perceiving this depiction as an attempt to spread canards against Hindus.

https://twitter.com/LegalLro/status/1707368530612813895?t=PXqKHWPfA9L-nCk07oHgqg&s=09

The cartoonist Sandeep Adhwaryu overlooked the fact that it was a compassionate cow-worshipping priest who provided clothing for the girl and rushed her to the hospital. This act of kindness occurred after the young girl had traversed 8 kilometers through the city before arriving at Dandi Ashram on the Badnagar road.

It was man named Rahul Sharma who offered her clothes and called for emergency medical service. Rahul Sharma said, “I gave her my clothes. She was bleeding. She could not speak. Her eyes were swollen. I called 100. When I could not reach the cops over the helpline, I contacted the Mahakal police station and informed them about the situation. Police reached the ashram in about 20 minutes.

Many have questioned the intention of the cartoon asking if it is beyond the realm of possibility that persons of other religions might have seen the girl but refused to help.

In light of this Hindumisic cartoon, Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) has filed a complaint with the Press Council of India against Times Of India and the cartoonist.

“We all will press for FIR against cartoonist Sandeep Adhwaryu n Editor under non bailable IPC Sections”, the LRO said in a tweet.

However after outrage, Sandeep Adhwarya took to his social media saying that the cartoon was done in his personal capacity and Time of India had nothing to do with it.

He removed the one featuring the TOI logo and issued an apology, although it wasn’t for the controversial cartoon itself but for including the logo of an organization that could potentially pursue legal action against him.

Dravidian Model Of Hypocrisy: After “Hindi Theriyathu Poda”, DMK IT Wing Handle Posts Job Ad For Hindi Content Writers

The DMK IT Wing’s recent job posting has ignited controversy and raised eyebrows due to an ironic requirement for Hindi Content Writers. The post on social media platform X said,

“Hurry up brothers and sisters! More than 50 jobs like Content Writer (Tamil/English/Hindi), Data Analyst, Research Analyst, Fact Checker, Web Developer/ Designer, Social Media Influencer, Social Media Manager, News Media Manager are waiting for you. Siblings interested in applying click on the LINK provided, or scan the QR CODE!”

The job announcement is seen as an attempt to counter the BJP’s strategy which has been exposing hate speeches of DMK leaders by subtitling them in Hindi and English.

This requirement has drawn attention and criticism from netizens because it appears contradictory to the DMK’s historical stance against the so-called “Hindi imposition“.

Here are a few instances that will help you understand the underlying hate for the language as well as the speakers of this language.

DMK’s Hatred For Hindi And Hindi Speakers

The hatred for Hindi goes back to the 30s when EV Ramasamy protested against it. An anti-Hindi agitation also took place in the 1960s when many young individuals passionately participated in protests against what they perceived as the forced imposition of Hindi. This anti-Hindi sentiment persists to this day.

The DMK had even come up with a T-shirt campaign called ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ (“I don’t know Hindi, Get lost!”) in 2020, claiming to resist ‘Hindi imposition’. Political leaders, including DMK’s Udhayanidhi Stalin, have endorsed the campaign.

Tamil Kollywood celebrities joined the growing campaign in Tamil Nadu against Hindi imposition in India. The hashtag “Hindi Theriyadu Poda” trended on Twitter, sparked by a picture of music director Yuvan Shankar Raja and actor Shirish wearing T-shirts that proclaim “I am a Tamil Pesum Indian” (I am a Tamil-speaking Indian) and “Hindi Theriyadu Poda.”

In fact, the leader and cadres of DMK leave no opportunity to ridicule Hindi-speakers as paanipuri walas. Its own Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said that it is not necessary to learn Hindi as speakers of that language can be found selling only Pani Pooris. DMK MP from Dharmpuri had derogated north-Indian states especially the Hindi-belt states as ‘Cow Piss States’.

Those who belong to this category also openly display their dislike for the Indians from the North of our country and use slurs like “vadakkans” (meaning someone from the north) on them. Many YouTube channels aligned to the DMK post videos making fun of them. Some other slurs include panipuri seller and beedavaayan (one who eats beeda/tobacco all the time).

In 2021, DMK Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban & Water Supply KN Nehru, while addressing an employment camp at the DMK office in Trichy, said, “Biharis lack brain as Tamilians have. People from Bihar are not as intelligent as Tamilians.”

Another DMK MP and senior leader TKS Elangovan spread hatred against Hindi speakers, saying, “Hindi is the language of backward states, Hindi will make us Shudra.”

Dhayanidhi Maran, DMK MP, stated in a public meeting that people who learned Hindi work as construction workers and wash toilets in Tamil Nadu, whereas Tamilians hold high-level positions in the IT sector.

DMK Minister and currently the party’s IT wing head TRB Rajaa had spewed venom against north Indians umpteen number of time. He had once said ‘Vadakkans’ (slur for North Indian) don’t have a sense of democracy adding that Biharis will remain at the bottom because of their voting choices.

MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, himself has incited hatred against North Indians working in Tamil Nadu. He stated, while campaigning for the 2021 state assembly elections in Tiruvannamalai on March 25, 2021, “They’re conspiring to place Hindi-speaking youngsters in jobs in Tamil Nadu and grow BJP through that here. The Edappadi Palaniswami government may be a mute spectator to this. But DMK or Tamil Nadu people won’t let that happen.”

DMK’s Hindi Hypocrisy

Top leaders of the DMK and their family members have no qualms in embracing Hindi themselves. They run schools that teaches Hindi. More than 40 schools run by the DMK leaders or their relatives are affiliated to the CBSE and follow the three language policy with one of the languages being Hindi.  MK Stalin’s daughter, Senthamarai Sabarisan runs the Sunshine Senior Secondary School where Hindi is mandatory till class 8. This list originally released by Kathir News names 45 private CBSE/Matric schools run by DMK members that include Hindi in their curriculum.

Here is a list of schools run by them:

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva had sung a famous Hindi song ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai’ at the farewell function of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Red Giant Movies belonging to Udhayanidhi Stalin had distributed Amir Khan-starrer ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ in Tamil Nadu. This was the first Hindi film to be distributed by Red Giant Movies.

This raises questions about the DMK’s public stance against Hindi while its own schools teach the language. It is pretty clear that the party is using the anti-Hindi sentiment solely for political gain.

The DMK has shown its displeasure against the NEP and has not allowed its implementation in the state board schools nor are they keen on allowing Navodaya schools to function in Tamil Nadu.

Netizens Slam DMK

Netizens questioned the hypocrisy of the DMK and the IT Wing.

Wife Of Chandrababu Naidu Visits St. Paul’s Lutheran Church For Early Release Of Her Husband

Nara Bhuvaneswari, the wife of the embattled former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, visited St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rajahmundry on September 27, 2023, accompanied by her daughter-in-law to offer special prayers for her husband’s release, as reported by the Hindu Post.

After the prayers, Bhuvaneswari visited her TDP supporters who were holding a relay hunger strike camp in the East Godavari district, fasting in solidarity with Chandrababu Naidu. Bhuvaneswari raised concerns about her husband’s prolonged detention without an investigation into the corruption charges. She emphasized that the authorities have failed to substantiate their allegations against the former Chief Minister and called for unity in supporting him.

Naidu, who is the leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), is currently in judicial custody at Rajamahendravaram Central Prison following an extension of his remand until 5 October 2023 in a multi-crore skill development scam case. According to Andhra CM Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu had allegedly misappropriated the establishment of clusters of centers of excellence (CoEs) in Andhra Pradesh, with an estimated project value of ₹3300 crores.

During Chandrababu Naidu’s tenure as CM of Andhra Pradesh, he faced accusations of favoring the Christian community, making various announcements and promises aimed at promoting Christian pilgrimages, conversions, and the development of Christian burial grounds.

In 2018-19, the TDP government had sanctioned Rs.38.36Cr for Construction/Repair of Churches. It sanctioned ₹58 lakh for construction and repair of toilets in Churches through a GO RT408 on 29.11.2018.

Chandrababu Naidu, who participated in a Christmas celebration organized by the State government had heaped praises on Christian missionaries saying “Christian missionaries served great for education and health. We saw Mother Teresa, how she served society.”

The Telugu Desam Party chief in 2018 said, “Our government has spent ₹250 crores for Christians in these four years. We will fight for giving the SC status to converted Christians and till then we will support you. I assure you to develop Guntur general hospital with six acres of additional land.”

“Your Name Is Sirajuddin? Then You Will Talk Like That Only,” Says Seeman At Press Meet

"Sanghi Means Friend, Dravidian Means Thief", Says NTK Co-ordinator Seeman

In a recent press interview, Seeman, a prominent Tamil politician, engaged in a fiery exchange with a reporter from Maalai Malar. Seeman seemed to have biased opinions of the reporter because he was from a particular community.

The exchange began when the reporter questioned the number of votes Seeman garnered per constituency, to which he responded with fervour. Seeman cited his impressive vote counts in specific constituencies and challenged the reporter’s perspective. The conversation quickly escalated into a debate about personal influence and the broader political landscape.

One of the central points of the question and answer volley was the role of money in Tamil Nadu’s politics. While the reporter suggested that no Dravidian party had openly admitted to using money power to win elections, Seeman questioned the reality behind such claims. He challenged the reporter to consider whether other parties distributed money during campaigns and if he believed this practice to be absent in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.

The interview also took a personal turn when Seeman inquired about the reporter’s affiliation with a specific newspaper, raising questions about the quality of the publication and the reporter’s suitability to ask probing questions.

Here is the transcript of the exchange:

Reporter: Is it enough if you get 3000 votes per constituency?

Seeman: I have won 27000 votes in a constituency, will you hang yourself? I won 37000 votes in Thoothukudi, will you consume poison? Tell me which constituency I got 3000 votes in, and I will burn myself.

Reporter: You cannot say that is your personal influence.

Seeman: So did I get that many votes by your influence? You don’t seem to be wanting to ask proper questions but just conjure random theories. After this press meet, we can talk separately. Learn to speak properly first. Let us assume I got 3,000 votes in my first election, how did I get 30,000 votes in the next election?

Reporter: It could be because of your party workers’ (men) activities.

Seeman: Why, won’t my sisters have done something good? Even if they indulge in any activities, the people have to vote, right? First, tell me if DMK ADMK gets any votes without using money power. If you are an honest reporter, you will ask that question. Have you asked them this?

Reporter: So far no Dravidian party has accepted that they have won any election/got votes because of money power.

Seeman: They haven’t said it, but haven’t they done it? Touch your heart and tell me if they are distributing money or not.

Reporter: I haven’t seen them do it.

Seeman: Which magazine/daily do you work for?

Reporter: Maalai Malar.

Seeman: Has the quality of the newspaper gone so bad? What is your name?

Reporter: Sirajuddin.

Seeman: Then you will talk like that only.

Reporter: If a reporter asks you a question, you get angered by it, you also want to know where we work.

Seeman: Should I not ask which newspaper you represent? Is there a rule that says that? You are supposed to ask proper questions and not make fun.

Reporter: I did not make fun of you.

Seeman: You did make fun when you said you did not see for yourself if any Dravidian party distributed money during the elections.

Reporter: I asked the questions only to make them available to the people.

Seeman: It doesn’t look like you are making news/facts available to the people.

Reporter: It is the truth. I asked if your influence had gone down.

Seeman: You tell me if my influence has gone down or improved?

Reporter: I don’t think it has improved.

Seeman: I think you are in a coma then.

Reporter: OK, let me remain in a coma.

Throughout the exchange, Seeman maintained a confrontational and assertive demeanour, defending his political influence and his party’s stance while emphasising the importance of direct and precise questioning from the media.

TN BJP Head Annamalai Busts Sun News’s Lies About Electricity Connection To Marudhamalai Temple

Sun News posted a video on social media platform X quoting Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President K Annamalai’s speech during his En Mann En Makkal yatra. Annamalai was speaking about the lack of electricity at the Marudhamalai Murugan temple. Sun News posted the video with a question, “Was DMK in power in 1962?” and shared a photo of the engraved inauguration stone mentioning MGR and Chinnappa Devar, trying to prove that they fact checked the claim and it turned out to be wrong.

The incident that Annamalai quoted at his yatra mentions how it was Chinnappa Devar popularly known as Sandow MMA Chinnappa Devar was instrumental in getting an electricity connection for the Marudhamalai Temple in Coimbatore. Annamalai said, “One has to talk about the Marudhamalai Murugan temple when you are in the Kaundanpalayam area in Coimbatore. Until 1962, Marudamalai Murugan temple had no electricity. DMK was hell-bent on not providing an electricity connection to the temple. It was Chinnappa Devar who gave electricity connection to the temple. Chinnappa Devar is known for his contribution to the field of cinema. He was the person who paid a registration fee for the electricity connection and met MGR to urge him to provide electricity to the temple. This is an example to show that DMK is always anti-Hindu and against Sanathana Dharma.”

This incident took place in 1962 and Sun News assumed that Annamalai was trying to pin the blame for the lack of electricity on the DMK.

Annamalai replied to this with a post on X. He said, “Generally I don’t respond to garbage, but have decided to make an exception today & clean it up for once. I have clearly said that Puratchi Thalaivar M G Ramachandran went to Marudamalai Murugan temple to inaugurate the electricity connection provided at the temple by accepting the request of Mr. Chinnappa Devar and defying the order put forth by the DMK. Concealing and distorting history is not new to DMK and their family-run media houses.”

He also shared screenshots of news articles about the said incident.

The Dinamalar article says, “The centenary celebrations of Sandow Chinnappa Devar, who achieved many heights in Tamil cinema production began on 28 June 2015. Until 1960, one had to walk to the Marudamalai Murugan temple, there was no proper walking path, electricity, or drinking water facilities. After sunset, devotees could not go to the temple. Once Devar came to know of this, he immediately paid the deposit for the electricity connection for the Kalveeranpalayam and Marudamalai villages. The connection was made available. As it was a time when electricity control was in force, Devar went to the Assembly (fort) and fought with the ruling government for this. Devar invited MGR to ‘switch on’ (inaugurate) the electric connection at Marudamalai. He said, “I have made 4 films with you, so with the profits I earned, this is the first thing I am doing with the profits. Please come and start it off Muruga…”

MGR was in a dilemma because of the DMK’s control! “Minister of Agriculture in the Congress Cabinet, Nallasenapati along with the Sugar Minister, installed electric lamps at Marudamalai, so if I “switch on” will it be ok,” hesitated MGR. “Muruga, you are doing it for the people, no one will question that, Don’t hesitate…” said Devar. MGR could not deny his request any further. “On 7 December 1962, I am proud to have had the opportunity to light the lamp in the temple of the deity worshiped by Devar Anna at the Garbagriha of Sevarkodi (flag of Lord Muruga) at Marudamalai,” MGR said.

Here is the subtitled version of the speech he gave at Kaundanpalayam quoting the Chinnappa Thevar-MGR incident.

Centre Asks FCRA NGOs To Declare Assets Acquired With Foreign Contributions

In an important decision, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday (25 September 2023) issued a gazetted notification, amending the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) rules. As per the latest mandate, NGOs with FCRA licenses must submit details of movable and immovable assets created out of foreign contributions. This is seen as an important step to put a check on some of the NGOs which have been acting against national interests.

Director K Sanjayan who had issued the notification said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 48 of the FCRA, the Centre makes rules; short title and commencement – these rules may be called Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2023 and they will come into force on the date of publication in Official Gazette – to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Rules, 2011.

In 2022, the Ministry of Home Affairs made revisions to regulations governing foreign funding. These changes included granting certain concessions, such as permitting relatives to send larger sums of money under the FCRA and extending the deadline for organizations to notify the government when opening bank accounts for utilizing funds received under the ‘registration’ or ‘prior permission’ categories.

Through this amendment, the Centre has revised Form FC-4 – which NGOs need to fill out every year and declare their annual returns under the Act. The first table pertains to details of movable assets created out of foreign contributions during the financial year and must state the value of these assets at the beginning of the financial year.

The second table is about records and details of immovable assets that were created from foreign funds. Non-profit organisations are required to declare the size of these assets, their location and their value as per the balance sheet. The NGOs also must submit a commitment letter from their donors, wherein details of the amount of foreign contributions and the purpose for which they are proposed to be given.

However, NGOs have accused the Centre of using FCRA law to target organizations it does not agree with. Oxfam India Trust, Indian Youth Centres Trust, Jamia Millia Islamia and Tuberculosis Association of India were among the NGOs whose registrations became void in January last year. In April 2022, the MHA cancelled the FCRA registration of the human rights organization Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative.

Woman’s Arm Amputated After Alleged Medical Negligence At Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Health Min Says Can Only Extend Medical Help Not Financial Compensation

In a shocking incident, a woman named Jyoti, who was initially in good health when she sought angio treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Chennai, had to undergo the amputation of her arm due to alleged negligent treatment.

Jyoti, a 32-year-old woman from the Washermanpet area in Chennai, was admitted to a private hospital and subsequently referred to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital on the advice of private doctors for angio treatment.

Despite having no prior injuries, Jyoti underwent angio treatment on the 15th. However, after the procedure, her treated arm became swollen and developed blood clots. Her husband, Zeenath, a differently-abled person, claimed that the doctors not only failed to provide an explanation but also alleged that they had removed all the flesh from her hands and feet. Doctors initially cited a blood clot as the issue. Zeenath expressed his distress, saying, “Yesterday they told me that my wife could only survive if her right arm was amputated. Today they are saying that they have to remove her left leg as well. If she came for angio treatment in good health, they treated her with such carelessness that it has put her life at risk.”

In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian in response to a question by a reporter who asked whether the patient will be given financial assistance stated, “Will the government offer any financial assistance? Our first priority is to save her. We are giving 20000 people treatment here. If everyone asks for financial assistance for medical reasons, can we give all of them? To do this on humanitarian grounds can be thought about later. Right off the bat, if someone asks for financial help, will you do it? We can only offer medical assistance. Other things come later. The patient herself has not asked for anything, you people are instigating them all the time. The government is doing all it can to save her life and we have given word that we will take up the medical expenditure. Then why are you asking about financial assistance again and again? You say you are a humanitarian, why don’t you donate 10 lakh rupees?”

This is not the first time such an instance of alleged medical negligence has occurred. Over the past 8 months, several such incidents involving women and children have been reported.

Some netizens questioned why the government was in a hurry to give financial assistance to those who knowingly consumed illicit liquor in the state.

The Health Minister of the DMK government has consistently failed to provide satisfactory explanations to address the rumors and accusations of medical negligence in these incidents. Rather than offering a comprehensive response to inquiries from the media regarding these allegations, he arrogantly asked a reporter to shell out 10 lakhs if he was so concerned. It’s worth noting that these are just a handful of documented cases, and it’s uncertain how many instances of medical negligence may have occurred but remain unreported.

Trevor Noah’s Bengaluru Show Cancelled, Apologises & Announces Refund, Netizens Tell AR Rahman To Learn From Noah

Trevor Noah, the Emmy-winning comedian and former host of “The Daily Show,” found himself at the center of controversy as his much-anticipated Bengaluru show was abruptly cancelled due to technical issues. The last-minute cancellation left fans disappointed and raised questions about the state of event management in India.

The show, scheduled at the Manpho Convention Centre in Manyata Tech Park, Nagavara, was marred by problems ranging from a delayed start to poor venue conditions. Audience members complained of a subpar sound system, inadequate air conditioning, and uncomfortable seating.

Despite the delayed start and an opening act, issues with acoustics became evident. The rear sections of the hall, accommodating about 1,000 seats, struggled to hear the performance. This led to repeated protests from the audience, with shouts of “We can’t hear” disrupting the show.

Trevor Noah, known for his professionalism, attempted to address the sound issues but eventually conceded that the performance could not continue under such conditions. The cancellation, which occurred approximately 50 minutes into the show, was announced to a disappointed crowd. He said, “Bad sound guys can’t figure out how to fix this. I won’t be able to perform like this. Sorry for the situation. Everyone will get their money back.”

In the aftermath, fans expressed their frustration, with some pointing out the inconvenience caused by traffic delays in reaching the venue. However, Trevor Noah and his team quickly assured ticket holders that they would receive full refunds and apologised for the unprecedented cancellation.

The incident drew comparisons to a recent controversy involving Indian music composer AR Rahman. Rahman’s concert in Chennai faced severe criticism due to alleged mismanagement, leaving attendees traumatised. Some fans noted the contrast between Trevor Noah’s cancellation and Rahman’s handling of the situation, suggesting that Rahman could learn from Noah’s professionalism.

https://twitter.com/abhitweets20/status/1707251258518610294

https://twitter.com/ekeeaswar/status/1707057059039154399

Rahman also shared a “highlights” video which seemed to rub salt in the still-healing wounds of the fans who attended the concert. Ironically, Rahman also turned off comments on that post.

Many netizens called him out for being tone-deaf after what happened at the concert in September 2023.

While Trevor Noah’s Bengaluru show cancellation highlighted the importance of event preparedness, it also prompted reflection on how artists should ideally handle unforeseen challenges. Noah’s commitment to audience satisfaction and quick response to the situation stood in contrast to recent incidents in the entertainment industry.

In contrast, AR Rahman neither issued a substantial apology nor announced refunds for those who had a distressing experience at the event. The music composer proceeded with his performance despite ongoing issues at the venue and the organisers failed to provide a suitable apology as well.

Association Of Surgeons Of India Seeks Refund From AR Rahman

The Association of Surgeons of India has filed a complaint against music composer AR Rahman, demanding a refund of ₹29.5 lakh advance payment for a conference. The association had planned an annual national conference in Chennai in December 2018 and had booked Rahman for a performance, paying the advance.

However, due to venue and government approval issues, the conference was cancelled, and the association requested a refund. Rahman’s team issued a post-dated cheque, which bounced, and they didn’t respond to follow-up attempts for two years.

This complaint comes in the wake of controversies surrounding Rahman, including a recent concert in Chennai marked by overcrowding and mismanagement, leading to a stampede-like situation and molestation incidents. A police officer was also transferred following the concert debacle. The Association of Surgeons of India has now sought action against Rahman and his aide, while police investigate the matter, adding to Rahman’s recent challenges.

Fans argue that despite both high-profile events ending in disappointment for fans, Trevor Noah’s professionalism and his prompt apology, along with the decision not to continue the program, elevate his image in comparison to AR Rahman.

Dharmapuram Adheenam Criticizes DMK Govt For Appointing Unqualified Odhuvars In Temples

The head of Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Masillamani Desiga Gnanasambanda Swamigal has criticized the DMK government in Tamil Nadu for setting a wrong precedent in the appointment of Odhuvars on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department.

Of the 183 temples of Dharmapuram Adheenam that falls under the ambit of HR&CE department, there are Odhuvars rendering their service in 107 temples.

For the rest, the Odhuvars are being appointed by the Tamil Nadu government through the HR&CE department.

A few days back, HR&CE Minister PK Sekar Babu issued the appointment orders for 15 new Odhuvars including 5 female Odhuvars.

The 27th pontiff of Darumapuram, Srilasree Masilamani Desika Gnanasambandha Paramachariar Swami has said in a statement that instead of appointing those who have studied in Thevaram Padasalai (Saivite schools) for 5 years, the Tamil Nadu government has appointed those who have studied for two years, which he fears will lower the quality of Odhuvars.

It has been revealed through media reports that some of the people who were appointed as reciters yesterday (25 September 2023) on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department are not fully qualified. We consider this to be a wrongful appointment affecting those who have completed five years of formal education. It also sets a false precedent. We have been running a Thevaram Padasalai for 80 years and we are bringing this to the notice of the government on the moral grounds that most of the Odhuvars who are currently in service have studied here.“, the Adheenam said.

The Adheenam further added “Earlier only those who studied in five year Thevaram schools were recruited as Odhuvars and they were paid less. It was relaxed and those who studied full-time for four-year in university and a three-year music school were appointed and now in a more flawed way, those who obtained certificate by attending only 1 class per month and 24 classes in 2 years in 24 classes have been appointed. It is not even the syllabus for Odhuvar service. This will affect the future of students who are currently studying full-time in seminaries, universities and government music schools. Since the appointments to be made are less, we request the government to appoint only qualified Odhuvars for temples.

The Adheenam also urged the government to treat the Odhuvars with dignity.
