“Christian Munnani” Calls For Renaming Murugan Temple Site Chennimalai As “Kalvaari/Yesu Malai”, Hindu Orgs Announce Protest

The Chennimalai Murugan Temple, situated in Erode district and boasting a history of over 3000 years, is in news due to a recent contentious speech by the local Christian Munnani group proposing to rename it as “Kalvaari Mala” or “Yesu Mala”.

This proposition has stirred controversy among the local Hindus, who have been venerating Chennimalai Murugan for generations.

Chennimalai is situated between Erode and Coimbatore. It is known as Siragiri and Chenniyangiri in Devanagiri, and Chennimalai in Tamil, the hill lends its name to the city at its base. The hill is also referred to as Sigaragiri, Pushpagiri, and Siragiri. Notably, the revered hymn ‘Kanda Sashti Kavacham,’ praising Lord Murugan, was first staged by Sri Bala Devaraya Swamigal at this temple.

What Actually Conspired

Unauthorised Christian prayer meetings took place in the predominantly Hindu community of Chennimalai, Erode District, causing local tensions. These meetings aimed to promote the Christian faith and attracted attendees from outside the town.

Offensive remarks about Hindu deities were made during these gatherings through loudspeakers, deeply offending Hindu residents. Despite causing issues, the unauthorised meetings continued.

On 17 September, a confrontation occurred when members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) objected to the meetings and insisted on proper permissions. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation between the BJP members and the Hindu Munnani, resulting in a police case with charges, including attempted murder.

Christian organisations and political groups like the Revolutionary Youth Front, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and MDMK demanded action against those opposing the prayer meetings. Two individuals, Chinnaswamy and Tamilarasan, were arrested by the police, which shocked BJP and Hindu Munnani members who felt the police acted unilaterally.

A Christian demonstration on 26 September 2023 raised concerns as some speakers expressed intent to transform the Chennimalai Murugan temple hill into a “Kalvari Hill”. Hindu organisations mobilized support for protests, and the issue transformed into a religious matter, distressing Muruga devotees and prompting further demonstrations and tensions in the area.

The Hindu Munnani has accused the Christian Munnani, along with certain local Christian missionaries instigated by certain political parties, of publicly giving a controversial speech saying that the sacred Hindu worship site of Chennimalai will be renamed.

The Hindu Munnani has strongly condemned this act, stating that it hurt the sentiments of Hindus. They have announced plans to stage a protest on 13 October 2023. Furthermore, they alleged that the Christian Munnani is undertaking these actions with the support of certain local politicians.

In a recently released video by Indu Makkal Katchi head Arjun Sampath, a Tamil public speaker named Manjunathan expressed strong disapproval for the proposition to rename the sacred Hindu place of worship. He emphasised that Chennimalai holds immense historical and cultural significance in the Erode district, revered by their ancestors for generations.

He said that the Christian Munnani’s suggestion to rename the temple has caused distress among Hindus, who have always been supportive of other communities without animosity. This effort to rename the temple is influenced by political motives and stated firmly that such actions will not succeed. He encouraged support for the protest against Christian Munnani’s divisive proposal on 13 October 2023.

It is noteworthy to mention here that an entire hill of in Tamil Nadu was encroached by Christian missionaries for years. The Vajragiri hill located about 95 km from Chennai along the Chennai-Trichy highway, atop which exists the Pasupathiswarar temple was encroached and there were allegations of local Hindus being denied access to the temple.

BJP’s Mission Telangana: Deliberate Strategy Or Costly Political Blunder?

This is the question that many supporters of the BJP are asking about the sudden turn of events in poll-bound Telangana, scheduled for state elections before the end of the year. With barely three months to go, the BJP’s momentum in the state saw a sudden shift for the worse, after the party’s central leadership moved their strongest, most vocal, most recognized regional Telugu leader, Bandi Sanjay Kumar from the crucial post of President of the Telangana BJP State Unit to a nationally important but regionally non-crucial post of National General Secretary, in July of this year. Instead, Union Minister, Kishan Reddy (Minister for Tourism, Culture and North-East Development) has been brought back to active state-level politics and given the additional position of State President of the party, which he had previously held from 2014-2016.

Is the BJP making the same mistake it had, in the recent Karnataka elections in terms of placing bets on the not-so-great leaders at the regional level? Is the BJP’s Telangana move a smart and strategic one based on a caste-money-influence combination…or is it a hasty, shallow, stop-gap move based on insufficient information carried out at the behest of a state-level leadership, immaturely motivated by infighting, jealousy and caste equations?

To many fans of the BJP in Telangana, Sanjay was the face of the party in the state, a tall and capable leader who almost single-handedly grew the party’s base, increased its popularity and brought it to the level of second largest party, a serious competition to the ruling BRS party which has managed to stay popular in spite of a two term incumbency. Till just a few weeks ago, it seemed that the BJP was second only to the BRS party and was a serious contender for a significant opposition in the state assembly or even the distant possibility of state leadership in collaboration with other parties.

Bandi Sanjay’s acerbic rebuttals, open challenges and bold replies to BRS big wigs including the CM himself, assured the BJP’s state unit, of higher-than-average press coverage and a perception of a strong local party with a strong, capable leader as an alternative to the current BRS party. True to his RSS roots, he spoke passionately about the nation, the state and his faith. Under his fearless leadership, both Sanjay and the party’s other leaders took on certain Hindu-centric causes which earned them supporters from many sections of the Hindu community, especially in the state’s urban centres like Hyderabad.

The impact of a bold, no-holds-barred, fire brand local leader like Bandi Sanjay can be judged by the quick succession of political events, soon after he was removed from his critical ‘President of the State Unit’ position. Ever since Sanjay’s exit from his state post, there has been a surge of renewed energy in the rank and file of the state’s Congress party. A decreased motivation of the state’s BJP unit has played to the advantage of the Congress party and infused it with a fresh lease of life after almost ten years, since Telangana’s bifurcation from the larger, united state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress party’s prospects appear to have increased almost overnight, with a steady number of former BRS leaders now wanting to join the party or return to the party they had previously abandoned for the BRS. A few leaders happen to be important district-level leaders with considerable influence among their constituents, while a few others promise to bring in the much needed funds and local connections, that could benefit the Congress significantly in the upcoming eldctions. The party has suddendly woken up from its long slumber and appears to be infused with a new energy that was clearly lacking when BJP’s Bandi Sanjay was a force to reckon with.

Additionally, their recent win in Karnataka has boosted their morale. The party held an important national level CWC (Congress Working Committee) meeting in the state a couple of weeks ago, with Sonia Gandhi herself announcing the party’s “six guarantees” – a set of electoral promises for free or heavily subsidized goods and services, similar to the pre-poll package of “five gurantess” that appears to have led to its electoral success in the May 2023 Karnataka elections. Will its fiscally irresponsible poll promises nevertheless increase the Congress’s chance for a comeback in a state under their control for several decades? Not to be left behind, the BRS party has also announced several attractive economic schemes for the common man besides finalizing its list of candidates.

Under the circumstances, it’s disappointing that the BJP has not yet announced plans for the state including their election manifesto, strategy or a final list of candidates. Are they already late to the game; will the delay and the uncertainty impact its regional political fortunes, painstakingly built from the ground in about five years or so, by Bandi Sanjay, a strong leader who was not afraid of questioning the incumbent BRS party? Sanjay is a leader, whose hard work and dedication to the party were noted and praised by the BJP’s top brass including Prime Minister, Modi.

While the BJP is still second to the BRS as of now, it may only be a matter of a month, before its hard earned gains of the last five years are quickly reversed for the worse, with the Congress taking its place as the chief opposition in the state. The quick, meteoric rise of the Congress party in Telangana after Sanjay’s exit from the state post, renders the BJP’s state election prospects unclear. The change in regional leadership has already impacted the morale and enthusiasm of the state’s BJP cadre. Many had joined the party, renewed their commitment to it and taken on additional responsibilities under the strong, bold and fearless leadership of Bandi Sanjay. Will the cadre work with the same energy and fervour under the new leadership of Kishan Reddy, who has just three months ahead of the elections to recharge the state’s BJP and increase its electoral prospects?

Why did the BJP central leadership agree to engineer this tectonic shift in local leadership at a critical time? What is its real motive and its short term as well as long term goals for its presence in Telangana? Many theories abound with both seasoned analysts as well as novices, discussing the following possibilities:

1.  Focus on the 2024 national versus the 2023 state elections, while the BJP continues to build local strength in time for the next (2028) state elections, when it will be in a better position to aim for a win and call the shots.

2. The BJP’s long term plans of a steady growth and a solid, unwavering, committed vote bank that believes in the BJP’s larger vision for the nation Versus utilizing quick-wins /short-term rhetoric that Mr. Sanjay has sometimes been accused of.

3. A high level, tactical understanding with current Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao’s BRS party, that would result in an advantage for him at the state level and in an equal advantage for the BJP at next year’s national elections…thus accommodating the BJP’s laser-focused goal of returning to power at the Centre for a third term.

4. perhaps the BJP’s central leadership, lacks a deeper awareness of state-level caste equations, hence they are bowing down to pressure tactics from the wrong influencers or the party’s old guard, which is reluctant to adapt to new leaders and ideas?

5. Does the BJP intend to play a carefully considered caste card to its advantage? Bandi Sanjay, a Backward Classes leader, is unlikely to be supported by the higher caste, land-owning commuity leaders, who still exercise considerable financial and voting influence in the rural and semi-urban areas of Telangana. Hence, ensuring that Sanjay is rewarded for his commendable state level work at the grass-roots level, by giving him an important national position ….yet removing him from the state unit, so that the party’s short-terms prospects are not negatively impacted by possible in-fighting, back stabbing and lack of unity.

6. The Telangana Congress unit has historically been dominated by the Reddy community. In spite of weak efforts from the party’s leadership to invite and make members of other castes welcome, the party continues to be one with a heavy ‘Reddy’ presence. The BJP may have decided to field its Reddy leader, Kishan Reddy, to counter the community’s unified vote for the Congress, by wooing them with one of their own?

Whatever the BJP’s strategy, rationale, reasons or lack of… will its risky gamble of changing the state’s leadership, just ahead of elections, result in a calculated advantage or in a short term (possibly longer term) loss of faith in the party among the Telugu people of both Telangana and Andhra? In the latest news from the BJP, the party seeks to counter conspiracy theories that it has a tacit understanding with the BRS party, by announcing that it plans to field its strongest Telangana leaders against chief minister and BRS leader, Chandrasekar Rao and his family.

Muslim rape minor girl, arrested under POCSO Kerala sexual assault

In very disturbing news, four policemen have been arrested and suspended from service in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, following their alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a minor girl (17-year-old) on the 5th of October, 2023. As per reports, the attack on the minor girl took place when she was visiting the tourist spot of Mukkombu with a friend in a moving vehicle.

The police officers who have now been placed under arrest have been identified as Sub-Inspector B. Sasikumar from the Jeeyapuram police station, Traffic Police Officer A. Siddharthan from the same station, J. Prasad from Navalpattu police station, and S. Shankar Rajapandian from the Thiruverumpur Highway Patrol team.

Authorities have filed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against them, reports, The Hindu Post.

The sexual assault on the girl took place at Mukkombu, a prominent tourist destination in Tiruchirappalli. It was in this spot four men in plain clothes, who identified themselves as policemen proceeded to interrogate the girl and her 19-year-old boyfriend. It seems the four police officers were intoxicated and soon the situation escalated when the girl’s boyfriend was physically assaulted.

After that, the minor was forcibly placed in a car under the pretext of a drug-related inquiry. During this time, the girl was sexually assaulted in the moving vehicle for almost one hour by the police officers who were in a state of intoxication assailants. Later the victim was released, but the cops made it very clear and threatened her with arrest on drug-related charges if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

However, the minor victim was courageous enough to file a case of sexual assault, and further investigations into the matter are currently underway. Trichy District Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar has assured the public that appropriate action will be taken against the accused officers.

Many on social media questioned the plight of the law and order in the state where law enforcers themselves are caught for such heinous crimes.

ED Seizes 15 Properties Linked DMK MP A Raja In Benami Case

On Tuesday, (10 October 2023), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took control of 15 different immovable properties owned by the former Union Minister and currently a DMK MP, A Raja.

The ED has disclosed that these 15 properties, which were indirectly owned by Raja, were in fact held through his Benami company, M/s Kovai Shelters Promoters India Pvt Ltd. This action was taken by the ED under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, as part of a disproportionate assets case.

In December 2022, the ED had temporarily attached 45 acres of land in Coimbatore belonging to A Raja’s company, again under the provisions of the PMLA. This land, valued at approximately ₹55 crores, had allegedly been purchased with bribe money from a major Gurugram-based real estate company in exchange for environmental clearance when Raja held the position of Minister for Environment and Forest during the UPA government in 2007, according to reports. Notably, this land was also registered under the name of Kovai Shelters Promoters India Pvt Ltd.

The said benami company was established in the same year and was officially registered in the names of Raja’s family members, according to the ED. However, the ED had previously indicated that the primary purpose of this company was to conceal the proceeds of A Raja’s alleged criminal activities.

It’s worth noting that A Raja, a DMK MP and former Union Minister, was recently in news for equating Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) with AIDS, leprosy, etc.

Gal Gadot, Natalie Portman, Andy Cohen And Other Celebrities Express Solidarity With Israel

Hollywood celebrities are expressing their solidarity with Israel following a surprise assault by Hamas over the weekend. During this attack, thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 900 individuals and the abduction of over 100 innocent civilians.

The assault, which occurred early on a Saturday during Shabbat and coincided with the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, is being likened to “Israel’s 9/11” and stands as the deadliest day the country has witnessed in half a century. Among the horrifying events, Hamas perpetrated a mass killing at a music festival, where Israeli rescue teams have discovered 260 casualties.

This grim day marks the largest loss of Jewish lives in a single day since the Holocaust, with nine American citizens among the rising death toll.

During the weekend, President Joe Biden strongly denounced the terrorist attack and expressed his support for Israel’s right to self-defense. In a statement, he firmly condemned the reprehensible assault on Israel by Hamas terrorists from Gaza, emphasizing that the United States is prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the Israeli government and its people. The president also reiterated that terrorism is never justified and reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security.

On Monday, Israel imposed a comprehensive blockade on Gaza, which resulted in the suspension of electricity, food, and water supplies to the area. In response to the Hamas attack, Israel has carried out airstrikes that have led to the deaths of more than 500 Palestinians.

Now, several prominent Hollywood celebrities, including Gal Gadot, Madonna, Natalie Portman, Andy Cohen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Debra Messing, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Kris Jenner, and Meghan McCain, have used their social media platforms to express their solidarity with Israel. They are standing alongside Israel during this time of crisis.

“I stand with Israel you should too,” Gadot posted. The “Wonder Woman” star, who is Israeli, has been posting daily about Israel being under attack. “The world cannot sit on the fence when these horrific acts of terror are happening!”

On Sunday, October 8 evening, U2 changed which is one of the most famous and popular rock band in the world changed the lyrics during a performance in Las Vegas to honor those murdered in Israel. “In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence,” the band posted. “But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed. So sing with us… and those beautiful kids at that music festival.”

Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, who is Jewish, posted: “My heart is shattered for the people of Israel. Children, women and the elderly have been murdered and abducted from their own homes. I am in horror at these barbaric acts and my heart is pounding with love and prayer for the families of all affected.”

Madonna who is one of the biggest pop star in the world posted a video on her Instagram showing footage of rockets being fired at Israel and the dead bodies of innocent civilians on the streets of Israel. She posted a lengthy statement, writing, in part: “Watching all of these families and especially children being herded, assaulted and murdered in the streets is Heartbreaking. Imagine if this was happening to you??” She continued, “My heart goes out to Israel. To Families and Homes that have been destroyed. To children who are lost. To Innocent Victims who have Been Killed. To All who are Suffering or who will suffer from this conflict. Im Praying For you. I am aware that this is the work of Hamas and there are many innocent people in Palestine who do not support this terrorist organization. This Tragic attack will only cause more suffering for everyone.”

Even the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Baseball MLB have given their full support by posting statements from the leagues’ official accounts to condemn terrorism and mourn the loss of lives in Israel.

Meanwhile, top Bollywood celebrities who frequently travel to the West to give stage shows and shoot films have remained mum on this bloody cataclysmic event. Only actor and activist Swara Bhaskar has given her tacit support to Hamas.

AIADMK Goes On Appeasement Spree To Woo Muslim Voters

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), after its exit from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has come under scrutiny for its perceived efforts to court minority voters. This shift is believed to be a response to the party’s claim of losing minority support during its alliance with the BJP. Let’s examine key instances where the current AIADMK’s General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami appears to be making overtures to minorities, particularly Muslims.

Parting Ways With The BJP Just Like The Muslims Wanted

The AIADMK General Secretary informed his Muslim supporters in Salem several days ago that the party had severed ties with the BJP in accordance with their wishes. He said, “I would like to point out that ADMK has acted just as you wished. Similarly, you have to ensure that our candidates win the elections.”

Resolution For Muslim Prisoner Release

AIADMK proposed a resolution in support of releasing Muslim prisoners in Tamil Nadu, including those serving sentences related to the 1998 Coimbatore blasts. The party has urged the Tamil Nadu government to consider releasing 36 Muslim prisoners who have been incarcerated for 20 to 25 years. This appeal is based on factors such as their age, deteriorating health, and the pleas of their families.

Symbolic Gestures

Now a member of the AIADMK, CTR Nirmal Kumar who was once with the BJP shared a picture on his X handle with the hashtag – An ADMK for everyone and the image had EPS wearing the skullcap characteristic of Muslims with the words “The Saviour” in the background written in Arabic style font. The background also depicted a mosque and the crescent moon.

https://twitter.com/CTR_Nirmalkumar/status/1711640679003361775

Possible Alliance With Muslim Parties

It has been reported that the ADMK leader EPS has met with and is in touch with Muslim political parties to possibly forge an alliance for the upcoming polls. A post made by Tada Rahim of the Indian National League Party indicates so. He wrote, “What I realised during the 30-minute interaction with former Chief Minister EPS, real talk, simple discussion, this is the mantra/reason why AIADMK workers and leaders never leave him.”

Tada Rahim is also said to have thanked EPS and the ADMK for passing a resolution to press for the release of the Coimbatore blasts convicts at the Madurai Conference.

History Of AIADMK’s Approach

AIADMK’s apparent shift towards minority outreach isn’t entirely unprecedented. During the tenure of J. Jayalalithaa as the party’s General Secretary, she introduced an anti-conversion law in 2002 while serving as the Chief Minister. However, she later repealed it in 2004, citing the request of “leaders of minorities”. She is also reported to have said, “This government will always be the true friend and champion of minorities. Those who are today masquerading as secular forces have in fact been responsible for the abject misery and humiliation of minorities without lifting a little finger for their genuine benefit,”.

Echoing this sentiment, EPS while interacting with party members in Salem recently stated, “As far as the ADMK is concerned, just like how the eyelids protect the eyes, ADMK will be the first people to protect the minority communities.”

In a move reminiscent of Jayalalithaa, the recent post shared on social media platform X which depicts EPS donning a skullcap, emphasising his connection with minority communities. It is noteworthy to remember Jayalalithaa had also attended iftar parties during Ramzan, covering her head.

In the run up to the 2011 Assembly Elections, Jayalalithaa promised to increase reservation for Muslims if voted to power which was in complete contrast to her comments in 2004 when she spoke against the Andhra Pradesh government’s 5% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for Muslims.

In 2004, Jayalalithaa did not flinch even a bit to ordering the arrest of the revered Kanchipuram Mutt seer, Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, in connection with a murder case. This move was seen as a calculated effort to bolster her secular image and strengthen ties with the Indian National Congress (INC).

The extent to which AIADMK’s overtures to minorities will impact their electoral fortunes remains uncertain, and this strategic shift has generated debate among political observers. It remains to be seen whether these efforts will yield the desired results in future elections.

Y20 India: Driving Change Against Discussing Change

The Y20 India engagement group and its initiatives under India’s G20 presidency have been an extraordinary odyssey, one that truly kindles the spirit of our times. Y20, the official engagement group for youth of G20 member countries first found itself featured at the global arena about a decade ago. Undoubtedly it found itself at the centre of attention as India with the world’s largest youth population prepared itself to host the G20 Summit this year under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports was tasked as the nodal Ministry, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation with its history of dedicated and yeomen service to the nation, headed by Dr. Anirban Ganguly was befittingly designated as the Secretariat for the Y20 engagement group for this year.

Right from the word go, Y20 India pushed the resounding message of driving change against merely discussing change. The themes for the tracks under the engagement group that were finalised by the Secretariat reflect the solid commitment towards driving real change upon pressing contemporary issues that concern the youth of today.

First and foremost, “Future of Work: Industry 4.0” was a nod to the whirlwind changes that are expected to impact every single sector of our work lives in the coming days.

“Climate Change & Making Sustainability a Way of Life” signified our commitment to a greener planet for ourselves and our future generations.

“Peacebuilding and Reconciliation: Ushering Towards an Era of No War” tapped into our yearning for a more peaceful world, wherein armed conflicts become a thing of the past.

“Shared Future: Youth in Democracy, Governance” delivered into the need for more active participation of youth in the democratic discourse.

Last but not least, “Health, Wellbeing & Sports” focused upon the crucial need for the overall, holistic development of the youth.

While the Curtain Raiser event at New Delhi was the first event for the Y20 Secretariat as a unit, my journey with Y20 India started with my participation in the Y20 Inception meet that took place at Guwahati, Assam. The confluence of minds from across the country immediately inspired us to do more as I found myself in the Coordination team soon. Tasked with the responsibility as the Y20 Secretariat Associate Coordinator, I was thrilled and equally zest to take forward the vision of Y20 India beyond Delhi’s diplomatic corridors. Organising a few outreach events in Tamil Nadu gave our team a first-hand experience of the challenges involved in pulling together such events. The events that we organised were usually based on the track themes of Y20 India.

Be it a major event, or a concise one within the four walls of a classroom, the message was loud and clear, “to provide an opportunity for every single youth of the nation to be a part of the dialogue”. One such outreach event that took place at Ramanathapuram in partnership with Amrita Vidyalayam, was held on the theme of Climate Change and “Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life.” The relevance of the theme to the coastal city that had already faced the wrath of a deadly cyclone, coupled with an ecologically sensitive coastal zone and rising water levels and sea erosion couldn’t be stressed more. And rightly so, such events gave us the immense satisfaction of imparting awareness to the youth with happenings and learnings from their own surroundings while also reassuring them about the global efforts being taken to tackle what’s happening in their neighborhood.

Through these outreach events, we also had the good fortune to host various towering personalities in their respective fields such as public administration, law, medicine, technology, and so on which made it a huge learning curve for all of us to learn from the best in the business.

Even as this outreach continued across the nation, the crucial Leh Pre Summit took place at Ladakh amidst stiff Chinese opposition and the success of this Pre Summit rightly symbolised India’s commitment towards protecting its own sovereignty whilst also fostering global dialogue and cooperation on the other hand.

After another leg of outreach events, we found ourselves in the historic city of Varanasi for the Y20 Main Summit. The entire Secretariat had worked day and night in anticipation of the grandeur event and the historic summit, much like the other G20 events, rightly echoed the theme of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, i.e., One Earth, One Family, and One Future. It is with this spirit that youth delegations from all the G20 member countries, organisations, and observers gathered at the Rudraksh International Convention Centre at Varanasi. The Convention Center in itself stands tall as a symbol of global cooperation and goodwill as the same was constructed using Japan’s Grant Aid through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

And rightly, the summit was a first-hand experience for all of us to engage in global cooperation and dialogue whilst promoting goodwill all along the process. The presence of the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mr. Yogi Adityanath during the summit’s opening ceremony and the hospitality extended by the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Varanasi District Administration reflected the immense trust and confidence that the Governments had placed in the voice of the youth.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath in particular, whilst debunking those contemporary questions surrounding the capability of the youth went on to state, “It is painful when anyone questions the talent and skills of youth, as youngsters have been providing solutions and directions to society since ancient times.” As the deliberations kickstarter in the breakout rooms for each track, chaired by the respective track chairs, the main auditorium featured various presentations that also addressed pressing issues and themes that concern the youth of today.

From the need for the enthusiastic embrace of technology to making use of the MyGov portal for youth engagement, a wide range of presentations were presented. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of fostering and coupling innovation and entrepreneurship amongst the youth also found resonance in the Y20 Summit as innovators from India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem presented their success stories.

Amidst this, we from the Coordination team also had the pleasure and privilege to be a part of the Organising Committee Breakout Session, wherein we reviewed and contemplated upon the thoughts and experiences pertaining to the entire summit’s organisation and the year-long outreach across the country amidst the presence of OC representatives from other nations.

Two days of intense diplomacy and dialogue effectively moderated by the very able Track Chairs resulted in the official Y20 Communique being adopted during the wee hours of 20 August 2023. The Y20 Communique, officially adopted and signed by all the delegates in the afternoon during a pompous ceremony, had various key points to its success. In particular, those who went on to address and amplify the Global South’s issues and concerns, true to India’s commitment, deserve a special mention.

One such significant resolution was to demand the African Union’s inclusion in the G20 which turned into reality in less than a month as during the G20 Heads of States Summit, the African Union was included into the G20, making 21 member entity thereafter.

Moving ahead, as far as the engagement and outreach were concerned, it is indeed a matter of pride for all of us at Y20 India as we have emerged as one of the most successful engagement groups, conducting more than 3,500 outreach events in total across universities, colleges, and schools throughout India. From the far-flung villages and towns of Arunachal Pradesh to the borders of Gujarat and from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Y20 India has impacted more than a million young people in terms of direct engagement.

At length, being a part of the Y20 India has undoubtedly been an awe-inspiring experience. It has reaffirmed the belief in the incredible potential of youth to drive positive change on a global scale. This would not have been possible without the guidance and efforts of various personalities such as Y20 India Mentor, Dr. Anirban Ganguly, Advisors, Abhinav Prakash & Varun Jhaveri, Coordination Head, Mr. Pathikrit Payne, Y20 India Chair, Mr. Anmol Sovit, Special Coordinator, Mr. Priyank Chauhan and the entire Secretariat and Associates who worked tirelessly towards the success of this engagement group.

The spirit of G20 and Prime Minister Modi’s vision, backed by the unwavering enthusiasm and dedication of youth, has undoubtedly laid the foundation for a brighter, sustainable, and equitable future. The outcome and success story of Y20 India is one that transcends borders and generations as it shall continue to remind the world that when the youth unite, they have a voice and they have a say.

From the youth’s perspective, this will continue to inspire fellow youngsters from across the globe to join hands in creating a better world for ourselves and for the upcoming generations. The journey continues and we have miles to go.

(Pascal Sasil R was the Associate Coordinator at Y20 India Secretariat )

Old Video Of Palestinian Islamic Scholar Calling For Eradication Of ‘Filthy’, ‘Cow-Worshipping’ Hindus Surfaces

Popular Palestinian Islamic scholar Nidhal Siam had called for the genocide of Hindus during a protest meeting at the controversial Al Aqsa mosque. His comments came in light of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s comments about Islam during a TV debate.

Even though this is an old video, it has once again resurfaced in light of Hamas terrorists going on a rampage against Jews whom they consider infidels.

In his speech, he urged Pakistan to wage jihad against India for the sake of allah and called for the eradication of infidels and polytheism.

Nidhal Siam accused India’s ruling party the Bharatiya Janata Party of showing disrespect towards Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

At the gathering, the cleric who was snarling at all non-Muslims and characterized the recent dispute involving India as just one in a series of perceived insults and hostilities perpetrated by non-believers against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, constituting what he described as a conflict against Muslims.

Siam drew parallels between this situation and events such as the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the alleged “kidnapping” of Muslim children in Sweden, and other perceived “crimes” committed by non-Muslims against Muslims.

Siam then advocated for the only suitable response being the declaration of Jihad in the name of Allah, aimed at disciplining and eliminating non-believers and polytheists. He called upon the armed forces of Muslim nations worldwide, with particular emphasis on Pakistan, to take action in defense of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad against Hindus.

During the gathering, the crowd chanted slogans such as “Hindus, you impure Hindus, Muhammad is the leader of all people, Allah Akbar!” The video of this rally was uploaded to the Al-Aqsa Call YouTube channel on June 10, 2022.

The following is a transcript of what Nidhal Siam said:

Hindus you filthy Hindus.. Muhammad is the master of all people. Oh Muslims, do you see the infidels’ successive affronts and hostilities towards the Messenger of Allah?

We barely got cleared of France’s affronts, when we had to encounter the affronts by Hindus, those cow-worshippers. These affronts are nothing less than a war against Islam and Muslims.

The infidels take turns in waging this war against the Muslims. First it was America with its aggression against Iraq and Afghanistan, then along came Sweden with its kidnapping of Muslim children.”

France attacked once, the Russians multiple times, then there is China with its crimes, and now the Hindu cow-worshippers, who have destroyed mosques, killed Muslims and destroyed their villages. Now they slander the Master of Mankind, peace be upon him. The one and only reaction to such a thing is to declare Jihad for the sake of Allah and to open up battlefronts for fighting, so that the army can have its say, by disciplining the infidels and polytheists and by eradicating them.”

As for you, oh people of Pakistan, you have a greater duty than others in fighting Hindus. They are right there on your border, occupying parts of your land and killing your people. You have a great army this is capable of disciplining Hindus, making them forget the whispers of Satan.

Here are some key verses that are often referenced…

  1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:191): “And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah (persecution) is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al-Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.”

This verse is often cited in discussions about self-defense, but it emphasizes the principle of proportionality in warfare and does not advocate unprovoked violence.

  2. Surah Al-Tawbah (9:5): “And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

This verse is often referred to as the “Sword Verse.” It was revealed in the context of specific battles against the polytheists of Mecca and should be understood within that historical context.

  3. Surah Al-Tawbah (9:29): “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.”

“Minority Appeasement Seems To Have Taken The Driver’s Seat For A Few,” TN BJP Head Annamalai’s Veiled Jibe At AIADMK For Demanding Release Of Coimbatore Blast Convicts

AIADMK, under the leadership of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), has made a significant commitment to minority rights. Following the party’s split from the BJP, AIADMK introduced a calling attention motion over the issue of releasing Muslim prisoners including those who have been convicted for the 1998 Coimbatore Bomb Blasts.

The motion called for releasing over 36 Muslim prisoners including the 16 convicts sentenced to life in the 1998 Coimbatore Blasts case on humanitarian grounds considering their long sentences served, old age and health.

The memories of the Coimbatore serial blasts of 1998 are still fresh in people’s minds. On February 14, 1998, a series of powerful bomb explosions rocked Coimbatore, resulting in a tragic loss of life and extensive injuries. The attack targeted a public rally organised by the BJP during the campaign stage of the 1998 Lok Sabha elections. These blasts comprised 12 high-intensity explosions that killed 58 people and injured over 250 individuals.

Investigations into the blasts revealed that the banned Muslim fundamentalist organisation, Al-Umma, led by SA Basha, was responsible for orchestrating this horrific act. The primary objective was to assassinate BJP leader L.K. Advani, who was scheduled to address the rally. The main accused, SA Basha, is serving a life sentence, but concerns persist about his lavish prison lifestyle and frequent paroles.

Despite the severity of the Coimbatore serial blasts and their impact on the nation’s security, they did not receive sufficient national media attention and condemnation at the time.

Responding to the overarching efforts of the AIADMK in appeasing the minorities, especially the Muslims, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President, K Annamalai slammed the appeasement tactics saying, “In February 1998, a bomb blast by Radical Islamic Fundamentalists in a serene city like Coimbatore led to the loss of 58 lives and injured over 200. The SC last week stuck down the bail application filed by a few convicts in this case & reiterated it as an atrocious act. Despite all this, today, the Tamil Nadu assembly discussed the release of Terrorists serving life imprisonment for their involvement in the Coimbatore bomb blast & other heinous acts.”

He further added, “While the wound of 1998 is yet to heal, last October, a suicide bombing incident shook Coimbatore again & NIA arrested 13 radicals involved in this terrorist act. Minority appeasement seems to have taken the driver’s seat for a few, and the safety of those who elected them has taken the back seat. We hope good sense prevails and the TN CM Thiru MK Stalin will stop this misadventure of releasing the radical Islamic fundamentalists involved in the Coimbatore Bomb Blast from prison.”

Whether the Tamil Nadu government led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will allow the release of the convicts is something to wait and watch.

ADMK Going The DMK Way? EPS Calls Union Govt As “Ondriya Arasu”, Calls For Release Of Muslim Inmates Including 1998 Coimbatore Blast Convicts

AIADMK To Hold Party's Foundation Day Celebrations From Oct 17-20 eps madras high court

In a surprising turn of events, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi Palanisami seems to have launched a series of “strategic” manoeuvers, that align his party’s stance with that of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) while courting support from minority communities in Tamil Nadu.

Ondriya Arasu Terminology

In a notable twist, he employed the terminology, “Ondriya Arasu”, which was coined and used by the DMK to denote the Central government. This term carries undertones suggesting that India is a union of states rather than a single, cohesive nation.

On 9 October 2023, the DMK passed a resolution urging the central government to instruct the Congress government in Karnataka to release Cauvery water in compliance with Supreme Court directives. The AIADMK voted in favour of this resolution while the BJP walked out citing that the resolution was incomplete and that it did not mention Congress which was the ruling government in Karnataka. Speaking to the press afterward, EPS stated that the DMK’s separate resolution on Cauvery water was aimed at the “ondriya arasu” (Union government). He said, “They (DMK) have brought about a separate resolution (for Cauvery water release) in the assembly; that was only to urge the “ondriya arasu” (union government)”.

Previously, the AIADMK had criticised the DMK for using “Ondriya Arasu” to address the central government and had supported the BJP. However, this recent shift indicates a significant departure from that stance especially after the AIADMK snapped ties with the BJP.

Calling For Release Of Coimbatore Blast Convicts

AIADMK, under the leadership of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), has also made a significant commitment to minority rights. Following the party’s split from the BJP, AIADMK raised a calling attention motion over the issue of releasing Muslim prisoners including those who have been convicted for the 1998 Coimbatore Bomb Blasts.

The motion called for releasing over 36 Muslim prisoners including the 16 convicts sentenced to life in the 1998 Coimbatore Blasts case on humanitarian grounds considering their long sentences served, old age and health.

Some of the prisoners in question were arrested in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts, which claimed 58 lives and injured many. 16 convicts, including Baasha from the Al-Umma, received life sentences. Many have spent more than 25 years behind bars, even though numerous calls have been made for their release.

Islamic parties, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) as well as DMK alliance members, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), have been advocating for their release. Protests and demonstrations have been ongoing in Tamil Nadu, emphasising the “plight of these prisoners”. Since the DMK came to power in 2021, the demand for their release has intensified.

This initiative aligns with the DMK government’s earlier efforts to release long-serving prisoners, especially those imprisoned for 20-25 years. The move comes as AIADMK seeks support from Muslim organisations and the broader minority community.

At the AIADMK Golden Jubilee Conference held in Madurai, the AIADMK reportedly decided to fulfill the main demand of the Muslims of Tamil Nadu to release the inmates involved in the 1998 Coimbatore Blast case who have been in jail for more than 20 years.

Seeking Alliance with Minority Parties

During a recent party gathering in Salem, Palanisami urged Muslims to support AIADMK in the upcoming general elections. A video of EPS speaking at the event went viral on social media. EPS said, “Many people from the Muslim community have come here. I would like to point out that ADMK has acted just as you wished. Similarly, you have to ensure that our candidates win the elections. I learned today that many people from the Muslim community reside in this area. You must go to each Muslim’s house and assure them that ADMK will always work towards the safety of the minority community. I am also from this region; I live in Salem, and you can meet me anytime. As far as the ADMK is concerned, just like how the eyelids protect the eyes, ADMK will be the first people to protect the minority communities.”

AIADMK’s recent moves are part of a broader strategy to secure support from minority communities, with a particular focus on forming alliances with Muslim political parties, such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK). Additionally, the party is exploring ties with the influential Dalit political party, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).

The party’s alignment with DMK’s terminology and its commitment to minority rights are significant developments that may shape the state’s political dynamics in the coming months.
