Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and president Thol. Thirumavalavan has criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over his alleged body language during a recent Assembly speech, saying it was inconsistent with human dignity and a dignified political approach.
In a statement, Thirumavalavan said the Chief Minister’s gestures during his reply to the Police Department’s demands for grants were widely criticised as mocking former Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin.
The Chief Minister’s side has reportedly clarified that the gestures were not intended to target Stalin. However, Thirumavalavan said such body language was inappropriate regardless of intent.
“Reducing or hurting an individual’s self-respect under any circumstances is not civilised,” he said, stressing that political criticism should be distinguished from remarks or conduct that personally demean an individual.
Thirumavalavan said even an ordinary person without social, economic or political power should not be subjected to an approach that hurts their dignity.
He also stressed the importance of respecting senior persons, particularly in public life. He urged the Chief Minister, who holds a “great responsibility”, to exercise greater caution in his body language in the future.
Thirumavalavan Objects to Law Minister’s Remarks
Thirumavalavan also criticised remarks made by the Tamil Nadu Law Minister during a subsequent Assembly discussion.
The DMK had sought the deletion of certain portions of the Chief Minister’s speech from the Assembly records. During the discussion, the Law Minister reportedly intervened and made remarks concerning Stalin’s past.
Thirumavalavan termed the remarks “a historical error” and said the nature of the repression during the Emergency-era MISA period was well known across the country.
He said making what he described as an entirely incorrect remark about Stalin, who had faced that period of repression, was condemnable.
Thirumavalavan urged the Law Minister to withdraw the remarks and publicly announce their retraction.
