In a tragic incident, a state-level volleyball player from Karnataka collapsed and died in the middle of a game late Saturday night.
33-year old Devaraj Anchan alias Devu was playing in a match at Innanje grounds near Kaup on March 27 when the tragedy occurred.
On Saturday night, he had played two matches and was getting ready for the third one. However, at around 1 AM, he suffered a cardiac arrest and suddenly collapsed on the ground. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Udupi, but he breathed his last on the way.
Devaraj was a resident of Kurkalu Subhash Nagar. He was popularly known among the locals as ‘Volleyball Devu’.
He had played for several state-level teams. But for some time he was away from the game. He was playing a match after a long time, according to reports. Earlier, he had been working as a supervisor in a stone quarry.
Devaraj, who was a bachelor, leaves behind his mother and five sisters. His father had died just four months ago.
