The Madras High Court has directed the Tiruppur district police to respond to a petition seeking permission to install a Vinayagar idol and conduct a procession in Kattupalayam during the Vinayagar Chaturthi celebrations, as reported in Hindu Tamil Thisai.
The petition was filed by S. Anbumani, an executive committee member of the Tiruppur district Hindu Munnani.
In his petition, Anbumani said an application had been submitted to the Tiruppur Superintendent of Police seeking permission to install a Vinayagar idol and conduct a procession in Kattupalayam from September 14 to 17.
The petitioner said the organisers were ready to follow the rules and regulations issued by the authorities every year for Vinayagar idol processions. He sought directions to the police to consider the application within the stipulated period and pass appropriate orders.
The case came up for hearing before Justice V. Lakshminarayanan on Monday.
During the hearing, the judge questioned the authorities over the delay in granting permission.
“When permission was granted last year, what is the problem in granting permission this year?” the judge asked.
The government counsel told the court that the district police would be consulted and a response would be submitted.
Following this, the court directed the police to respond to the petition and adjourned the case to September 9 for further hearing.
