TVK Should Ally With DMK, Says Thirumavalavan

Despite the sharp political rivalry between the DMK and the TVK in Tamil Nadu, both parties share a common ideological opposition to the BJP at the national level and should therefore be part of the INDIA bloc, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan said on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, as reported in DT Next.

Speaking to reporters in Ariyalur after participating in the district development coordination and monitoring committee meeting, Thirumavalavan argued that the national political landscape should be viewed separately from state-level electoral rivalries.

“Despite the DMK-TVK conflict, both should be part of a national alliance to be formed to counter BJP’s communal politics, and defeat its conspiracies,” Thirumavalavan said.

He clarified that the suggestion was not merely his personal opinion but was based on the publicly stated positions of both parties.

“TVK calls BJP its ideological enemy, and DMK continues to oppose BJP. Tamil Nadu politicians and journalists may not understand my national perspective,” he said.

When asked whether the DMK would be formally invited to join such an alliance, Thirumavalavan replied that the matter would be considered.

The VCK leader also accused the BJP-led Union government of deliberately erasing Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy by renaming the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

“The BJP-led union government intentionally removed the name of Gandhiji in the national rural employment guarantee scheme and renamed it as VB-G-RAM-G, which is evidence of how the BJP hates Gandhiji,” he said.

He further alleged that the Union government had failed to fulfil its commitment under the rural employment scheme by not providing adequate funds to the states.

“The Union government assured employment for 125 days under the scheme, but refused to allocate sufficient funds to the states. We opposed the move in the parliament and continue to voice against this,” Thirumavalavan said.

Commenting on allegations of irregularities in the appointment of assistant professors, Thirumavalavan said the VCK would take up the matter with the appropriate authorities.

“There was an irregularity in the appointment of assistant professors, and the party has decided to approach the concerned officials for action. The government will take proper action against those who are involved in the irregularity,” he said.

On the VCK’s political positioning after joining the TVK-led government, Thirumavalavan reiterated that the party had not severed ties with the DMK.

“The VCK has joined the cabinet of TVK but did not snap the ties with the DMK. The alliance with the DMK is not suspended for supporting another alliance for ensuring a stable government,” he said.

At the same time, he asserted that the VCK’s association with the TVK government was not unconditional.

“We will withdraw the alliance with the TVK at any time,” he stressed.

Responding to MDMK general secretary Vaiko’s earlier remark suggesting that Thirumavalavan deserved a Nobel Prize for maintaining cordial relations with both the DMK and the TVK, the VCK chief responded with humour.

“I would thank him again if I get the Nobel prize,” Thirumavalavan said, as reported in Times of India.
