Tributes Pour In For Melmaruvathur’s Bangaru Adigalar, Funeral Conducted With Full State Honours

Spiritual Guru Bangaru Adigalar, known for introducing groundbreaking changes that enabled women to conduct religious ceremonies in the inner sanctums of Shakti temples, passed away on Thursday (19 October 2023) due to health issues. Adigalar, aged 82, experienced chest discomfort prior to his demise at his residence in Melmaruvathur in Tamil Nadu. He is survived by his spouse, two sons, and two daughters.

Bangaru Adigalar, initially a teacher, possessed a profound inclination towards spirituality, which gradually led him to devote more of his time to worship, divination, and spiritual service. Over time, he evolved into a revered spiritual guru.

Adigalar was highly regarded for his friendly and approachable demeanor. His public persona began to take shape because of his emphasis on promoting women’s participation in worship and simplifying religious practices.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of his spiritual service spanning more than four decades was his pioneering effort to allow women to enter the innermost chambers of Shakti temples under his administration and those of his followers.

To his devoted followers, he was affectionately known as ‘Amma’ or mother, and they often wore red garments as a symbol of their devotion to Shakti worship.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the demise of Shri Bangaru Adigalar Ji.

“Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Bangaru Adigalar Ji. His life, rich in spirituality and compassion, will forever be a guiding light for many. Through his tireless service to humanity and emphasis on education, he sowed the seeds of hope and knowledge in the lives of many. His work will continue to inspire and guide generations. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

 

Mr Amit Shah said “Deeply saddened by the demise of Padma Shri Bangaru Adigalar Ji, the head of Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peedam.Adigalar Ji was known for his spiritual insights that transcended the realms of ritualistic practices. My sincerest condolences to his family and followers in this hour of grief”, he said, in a post on X.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi said he was deeply saddened at the passing away of ‘Amma’ Bangaru Adigalar.

“A highly evolved soul and great spiritual teacher. His contributions to education, healthcare and social reforms will continue inspiring us. My heartfelt condolences to his family and followers. Om Shanti!” the Governor said.

Chief Minister MK Stalin also expressed anguish over his death,  and announced state honours for the spiritual leader’s funeral to pay tributes to his services.

“When the DMK, after a long crusade, empowered people of all castes to become priests in temples, Bangaru Adigalar’s spiritual revolution, allowing women to perform puja inside the garba graha of temples is admirable. Bangaru Adigalar revolutionised spiritualism for a social cause and ensured prominence to women in allowing them to pray inside the sanctum sanctorum, said MK Stalin.

BJP state chief K Annamalai said the spiritual guru totally involved himself in spiritual and educational work and guided the poor and downtrodden.

“It is a loss to our society. I extend condolences to his loved ones and devotees. May Amman (Goddess) grant his family and devotees the strength to bear the separation. Om Shanti,” he said.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami acknowledged that despite starting his journey as a modest teacher, Adigalar ascended to become a prominent spiritual figure, instigating change across various domains, such as education, healthcare, and the betterment of underprivileged communities.

Former chief minister O Panneerslevam observed that Adigalar adeptly merged social welfare initiatives with his spiritual pursuits, and his absence leaves an unfillable void, as no one can replicate his multifaceted contributions.

Tamilisai Soundararajan, the governor of Telangana and lieutenant governor of Puducherry, expressed grief at the death of spiritual guru Bangaru Adigalar.

His funeral was accorded the 21 gun salute as per the traditions of funeral with full state honours.
