TN: Old man from ST community attempts suicide over govt not issuing caste certificate

On Monday (October 11), an 83-year-old man tried to kill himself by slitting his throat during a protest demanding caste certificate for his community in Tiruvallur district.

About 200 men and women belonging to the Tiruvallur District Tribal Konda Reddy Hill Development Association went on a hunger strike in front of the Thiruthani Revenue Commissioner’s Office demanding caste certificates.

Furor erupted when police tried to chase them away.

The Revenue Commissioner, who was there at the time, engaged in 2 hours of talks with the protesters.

Periyasamy, an 83-year-old man who came to the protest, suddenly cut his neck with a knife in his hand, causing a commotion there.

Police immediately rescued the old man and admitted him to the Trivandrum Government Hospital for treatment.
