TN CM Stalin Violates Model Code Of Conduct, Makes Announcment About ₹1000 For Women Ahead Of Erode East Bypolls

DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday (25 February 2023) declared that an announcement would be made about the party’s flagship poll promise of ₹1000 for women head of the household in the upcoming Budget session.

The DMK in its manifesto for the 2021 Assembly election promised to provide ₹1000 as financial assistance for every women head of the household.

Opposition parties like the AIADMK and BJP have been criticizing the DMK for not fulfilling its promise despite more than 20 months since coming to power.

Meanwhile, the by-election in Erode East has turned into a high stakes affair with the DMK luring voters with cash, watches, pressure cooker, anklets, silver lamps, etc to vote for its ally Congress’ candidate EVKS Elangovan.

Chief Minister Stalin who hit the campaign trail on the last day of canvassing votes, said that the date of implementation of ₹1000 for women will be announced in the budget in March.

With this announcement, CM Stalin has violated the Model Code of Conduct for the Guidance of Political Parties and Candidates (MCC) which states “Ministers and other authorities shall not announce any financial grants in any form or promises thereof”.

The MCC is a set of obligatory guidelines that need to be followed by all political parties and candidates contesting elections.
