“This Thread”: TNM Journo Makes Casteist Remark

In yet another instance of a journalist from The News Minute (TNM) spewing casteist venom against Tamil Brahmins, one Balakrishna Ganeshan of the media outlet has put a tweet with casteist innuendo.

Bala had invited himself to a conversation between Dr. Sumanth Raman (political commentator and TV debater) and Soumitra Pathare (Director of Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy) taking a jibe at Sumanth Raman’s caste identity.

On October 8, an anonymous handle had pointed out the skewed nature of reservation and how it was impacting meritorious candidates.

Reacting to the above tweet, Dr. Sumanth had said that while millions of genuinely disadvantaged need the benefits of reservation, the current reservation system was exploited by those who are socio-economically well off!

“The frustration comes when someone wealthier than you and with generations of education claims the benefit denying those who genuinely need support. Reservation is needed but not for all enjoying it at present.” Sumanth had said.

This had triggered a debate between Sumanth Raman and Soumitra Pathare with the latter asking for proof of Dalits with generations of education while Sumanth Raman had made no mention of Dalits in his tweet and was pointing out at the elite privileged wealthy castes many of whom fall under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Soumithra further went on to ask “With this logic, I presume you are also against EWS reservations for savarnas? Bcoz many savarna communities are powerful, wealthy, educated & land owning communities for centuries.” to which Dr. Sumanth responded saying that he supported the reservation for economically weaker sections.

Reacting to the above tweet of Sumanth Raman, The News Minute journalist Balakrishna Ganeshan put out a pun intended tweet saying “This thread (andha thread ah thaan sonna)” referring to the poonool/janeu (sacred thread) worn by Brahmins.

The alleged “journalist” later tried playing the victim card turning the tables on Sumanth.

The News Minute journalist is known for making anti-Hindu tweets. Earlier he had mocked the Tamil Hindu festival of Ayudha Poojai, celebrated during Navaratri.

Once he had dehumanised the death of noted Telugu lyricist Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry saying the lyricist’s “views were like any average Brahmin Sanghi”.

This is not the first time that TNM journalists have resorted to spew venom against Hindus particularly Brahmins.

Bharathy Singaravel, another journalist with the TNM has peddled hate against Tamil Brahmins many times.

In the above tweet, Bharathy Singaravel uses the word “Paarpaan” – a derogatory and genocidal term used against Tamil Brahmins – to call out the Brahmin identity of a defence policy analyst.

In another tweet, she wrote that Tamil freedom fighter Vanchinathan who is a Brahmin and killed British Collector Robert Ashe disgusts her.
