In what comes across as a hilarious and ingenious move, Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao has written to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Italian, seeking his intervention over the alleged delay in college fee reimbursements and what he described as a worsening crisis in the state’s education sector, as reported in Siasat.
Rao said he chose to write the letter in Gandhi’s “mother tongue” after repeated protests by students and opposition leaders allegedly failed to draw the attention of the Congress government.
Referring to hunger strikes, protests, police action, arrests and representations submitted by students to the Chief Minister, Rao said the concerns of students had still not reached either Rahul Gandhi or the Congress government in Telangana.
In his letter, Rao alleged that colleges had been awaiting reimbursement payments for a prolonged period, putting the education of lakhs of students at risk. He claimed that nearly 40 lakh students, particularly those from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and economically weaker sections, were affected by outstanding reimbursements estimated at ₹15,000 crore.
According to Rao, the delay had also created difficulties for educational institutions. He alleged that some colleges were withholding students’ certificates because of unpaid dues, preventing them from pursuing further education or taking up employment.
The BJP leader further claimed that the financial strain had affected the functioning of institutions, with teachers and other employees allegedly receiving only partial salaries. He said the prolonged non-payment had also affected infrastructure, academic standards and the ability of colleges to meet routine expenses.
Rao also highlighted the BJP’s protests over the issue, alleging that the Congress government had responded with arrests and police action.
He said the government had denied permission for a proposed hunger strike at the venue selected by him, following which he held the protest at the BJP’s state headquarters instead. Rao further claimed that he was arrested four times within 10 days for raising the issue of students.
Taking aim at the Congress government, Rao also referred to promises made in the party’s Youth Declaration. He alleged that commitments relating to unemployment allowances, jobs, recruitment calendars and Vidya Bharosa Cards remained unfulfilled even after the government had completed 1,000 days in office.
Rao questioned Rahul Gandhi’s position on the handling of protests in Telangana, arguing that the Congress leadership’s stated commitment to democracy was inconsistent with the alleged restrictions imposed on peaceful protests.
He urged Gandhi to intervene with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and press the state government to clear the pending fee reimbursement dues. Rao also called for urgent measures to address the wider problems confronting the state’s education system.
