The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration has renamed the Tamil Nadu Fact Check Unit the Information Integrity Desk (IID) and placed Guru—popularly known as Guru Thalaiva, founder of the Online Thalapathy Fans Club and the party’s social media head—in charge of it, according to official sources.
Separately, Dhivya, coordinator of TVK’s IT wing, has been appointed special officer of the social media desk under the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).Sources say the IID’s core role remains largely the same as before: identifying misinformation and manipulated content, verifying claims against official records, publishing evidence-based fact checks, and containing panic before it spreads. Guru leads the unit, with Prasanna serving as IID lead and Sujitha as public relations officer.
Claims submitted for verification now follow a Ticket-Based Tracking System. Every request receives a unique ticket ID that tracks it from receipt through to publication of the fact check. The system logs the claim’s source, the assigned fact-checker, the relevant department, the nodal officer contacted, and the department’s response. Officials describe this as a measure to ensure accountability, transparency, traceability and full auditability.
High-priority claims are to be handled within one hour, medium-priority ones within three hours, and low-priority ones within seven hours. Departments have been told to respond even outside normal working hours, on the grounds that misinformation does not wait for office schedules. Each department has nominated a single nodal officer to coordinate with the IID, connected through a dedicated WhatsApp group.
Alongside the IID, DIPR has created a separate social media desk organised in a six-tier hierarchy. It runs from the DIPR director and joint director (social media) down through a public relations officer, special officer, senior programme coordinators and writers, to technical assistants and graphic designers. Dhivya sits at the fourth tier as special officer and also acts as the point of contact for quality clearance before content is released.
The previous DMK government set up the Tamil Nadu Fact Check Unit on 6 October 2023 and appointed Iyan Karthikeyan, then editor-in-chief of the fact-checking platform YouTurn.in, as mission director. C T R Nirmal Kumar, then with the AIADMK but currently a Minister in TVK, challenged both the unit’s formation and Karthikeyan’s appointment in the Madras High Court; he later withdrew the case.
A Taxpayer-Funded Propaganda Machine Masquerading as “Fact-Check”
The Tamil Nadu Fact Check Unit was never a neutral body. From day one, it was designed as a taxpayer-funded extension of the ruling party’s IT wing, created to hunt down critics and shield the government from scrutiny.
When the DMK government set it up in 2023, it placed Iyan Karthikeyan — a self-styled “fact-checker” and known Dravidian propagandist — as Mission Director on a hefty ₹3 lakh monthly salary. His previous platform, YouTurn, was widely exposed for peddling half-truths, selective outrage, and outright rants against DMK critics such as Maridhas and Rangaraj Pandey, while giving a free pass to the ruling party’s own misinformation. Qualifications for the post were allegedly tailored to fit him (an engineering degree + master’s in journalism), and the entire selection process was conducted in complete secrecy — no public advertisements, no transparent applications.
As The Commune pointed out at the time, the unit was given sweeping suo-motu powers to flag any critical post, tweet, or video about the government as “fake” or “misleading,” classify it as “actionable,” and immediately refer it to the police and legal departments. In effect, the government became judge, jury, and executioner. Public money was being spent not to fight misinformation, but to muzzle dissent and create a chilling effect on free speech.
The FCU’s real track record under the previous regime confirmed those fears: it functioned less as an independent verifier and more as a taxpayer-funded attack dog against political opponents, journalists, and ordinary citizens who dared to question the government.
Now, under the TVK government, the same structure continues — only the faces have changed. Replacing one set of party loyalists with another (the founder of the Online Thalapathy Fans Club and the party’s IT wing head) does not reform a fundamentally partisan institution. It merely transfers control of the same taxpayer-funded censorship tool from one political camp to another.
