More than 400 persons with disabilities staged a protest at the Commissionerate for the Welfare of the Differently-Abled on Kamaraj Salai in Chennai on Monday, 7 September 2026, demanding that the monthly assistance provided by the Tamil Nadu government be increased from ₹1,500 to at least ₹6,000, as reported in The Hindu.
The State-wide protest was organised by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC).
The protesters said the existing assistance of ₹1,500 was inadequate to meet even basic medical expenses. They pointed out that travel costs, medicines and consultation fees for two visits to a doctor could consume most of the monthly assistance.
TARATDAC members also highlighted the higher assistance provided in some neighbouring States and Union Territories. They said Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh provided assistance ranging from ₹4,500 to ₹5,700, while Tamil Nadu continued to provide only ₹1,500.
The protesters said limited employment opportunities made the monthly assistance particularly important for persons with disabilities who were unable to support themselves through regular employment.
They also expressed disappointment that no announcement had been made on increasing the assistance during the ongoing Assembly session, despite the demand having been raised for a long time.
