SC orders Punjab to hand over gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to UP

In a big blow to gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari who was safely ensconced in a jail in Punjab, the Supreme Court on Friday (26 March) ordered Ansari be shifted to a jail in Uttar Pradesh.

The court has given two weeks time to have Ansari shifted from Rupnagar jail in Punjab to Banda jail in Uttar Pradesh. The verdict was given by a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and RS Reddy.

For a long time, the Uttar Pradesh government had demanded that the Punjab government, led by Congress’ Capt. Amarinder Singh, hand over the custody of Ansari, to the district jail in Banda, UP. However, the Punjab government had used every tactic and legal dodge to ensure that Ansari stayed in a Punjab jail.

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government had told the apex court that the Punjab government was “shamelessly” protecting Ansari, who is facing trial for several heinous offences before a special MP/MLA court.
