Opposition Leader EPS urges DMK to drop idea of allowing lottery ticket again in TN

Opposition leader Edappadi Palanisamy has stated that the DMK government is considering restoring the lottery ticket in Tamil Nadu, and has urged the DMK government not to do so.

In a statement, Edappadi Palanisamy said,” It was during Karunanidhi’s regime, Tamil Nadu government allowed lottery tickets coming from other states. Following this, like horse racing, lottery tickets became the biggest gamble in Tamil Nadu. Private lottery firms began making fraudulent lottery tickets and selling them to the general public, much like counterfeit notes.”

He added that it was Jayalalitha who, with a single signature, outlawed lottery tickets in Tamil Nadu overnight, following a government policy decision in January 2003, after several poor people died buying lottery tickets in the mistaken belief that they would make fortunes overnight. He further said that many innocent persons have committed suicide after losing a large amount of money on lottery tickets.

“In this scenario, we’ve learned that the ‘Vidiyal’ government is considering reintroducing lottery tickets, which will ruin the lives of many common people. It is reprehensible that the DMK, which stated before coming to power that they knew how to boost the state’s revenue, has opted to bring back the lottery ticket and destroy the state,” he added.

He went on to say that the DMK government should drop the idea of reintroducing lottery tickets in Tamil Nadu as it will benefit only private companies and the ruling government and that if the lottery scheme is reintroduced, Stalin’s government will face opposition from the people of Tamil Nadu.
