Madras HC orders strict action against temple encroachment reported in Tirunelveli

Sivagami Ambal and Singaperumal Temple are two of the most famous temples in the Tirunelveli district. The lands belonging to this temple have been encroached by some commercial entity having not been legally rented out to them. The authorities had not taken any action to lodge a complaint with the HR&CE Department in this regard. This has resulted in loss of revenue for the temple.

Sundaravel from Tirunelveli had filed a PIL in the Madraas High Court against this. He stated in his petition that despite he complaining to the HR&CE that those occupying the temple premises should be immediately evicted and action be taken to pay the rent due to the temple properly they have not taken any action.

The bench headed by Justices MM Sundaresh and S Anandi directed to send notices to the Principal Secretary, Commissioner and Temple Executive Officers in this regard. Further, the hearing on the PIL was adjourned till April 26.
