Lathika Subhash, who shaved her head after Congress denied her ticket in Kerala polls, will now contest as independent candidate

More trouble has emerged for the beleaguered Congress Party in Kerala as its former Kerala Mahila Congress chief Lathika Subhash will now fight the election as an Independent from the Ettumanoor constituency.

Subhash had earlier shaved her head as a mark of protest after being denied the party ticket to contest the upcoming Kerala state assembly polls.

Lathika Subhash had gotten her head tonsured in front of the party office in Thiruvananthapuram on March 14. This unique form of protest by Subhash had received widespread attention across the country.

Subhash had accused the Congress party of not giving enough seats to women candidates and had pointed out that in the list of 86 candidates released by Congress, only were nine women.

“I am saddened by the candidate selection of KPCC. We sought for 20 per cent seats for women. But at least expected one woman candidate from each district. But those women leaders who used to work for the party have been totally ignored,” she told reporters outside the Congress office.

Kerala will go to the polls in a single phase on April 6 and the results will be out on May 2.
