Fact-check: Why did the BJP polling agent ask a woman to remove her Hijab to cast her vote

News has been doing the rounds that a booth agent of the BJP in Madurai was involved in an altercation with a Muslim woman wearing a hijab.

The DMK government has filed a complaint against the Girinandan under 4 sections, for allegedly harassing a Muslim woman into removing her hijab if she wished to cast her vote. Girinandan has now released a video explaining the actual incident, where he said, “The Al-Amin school prohibited BJP cadres and candidates of the 7th and 8th ward from entering the school. Specially, the 8th ward candidate and I, the polling agent, were both denied entry into the 8th ward polling booth.”

He then continued, “8th ward DMK candidate Mohammed Yasin and 30 of his supporters came together and gathered in front of the polling booth, blocking the entry to it. They started reprimanding all those who questioned them also. This is because DMK was trying to cast fake votes. We decided to ask everybody to show their faces properly and then allow them to cast the vote. When we took efforts for that, they started opposing it, and hence got into an argument with me.”

He had only asked a woman to remove her hijab so that fake votes were not cast by the same person twice. However, they framed him by saying that he was discriminative. The video of Girinandan’s explanation is not being shared widely. Even the media channels that have covered the news, have not asked for Girinandan’s explanation on the allegation.
