Dravidianist director Karu Palaniappan was the host of the series Tamizha Tamizha on Zee Tamil from 2018 to 2023. During this time, he pushed a massive amount of Dravidianist propaganda. In a show likely from 2021, he had a programme on live-in relationships and preserving Tamil/Hindu culture and among the side that argued for it was Dravidianist speaker Mathivadhani who was a law student at that time. This is how the discussion goes, and, in the discussion/debate, we see how Mathivadhani and Karu Palaniappan try to prove that even Sangam literature (from the anthology called Kurunthogai (poem 40) endorsed Dravidianist ideas such as live-in relationships.
A clipping of this programme was shared on social media. In the clipping, Mathivadhani is heard saying, “Does Mahabharatha preach monogamy? If he tells me which purana or itihasa had monogamy, we will follow that culture. The second point, the four qualities or traditional virtues, Achcham (fear), Madam (simplicity), Naanam (modesty) and Payirpu (sensitivity), ask him what does payirpu mean.”
Then the person on the other side of the debate said, “Payirpu means intelligence. let me explain. It means the actions that we do today, the capability to foresee the problems it may create is called payirpu.”
Another participant, a Tamil teacher explained it further saying, “Anticipating future developments and acting accordingly is Payirpu”
Mathivadhani contested this saying, “Which Tamil dictionary has this? The one I studied told me payirpu meant “being ugly and repulsive””
The Tamil teacher replied saying, “It is not about who gave the meaning, it is how you understand it.”
Mathivadhani claimed how one can choose according to ones’ own wish.
Veering back to the topic, the teacher said, “I am not questioning your clothes, they keep changing.”
Here the ‘moderator’ – Dravidianist director Karu Palaniappan interjects and said, “You are just changing goalposts and escaping the question. What you studied may be wrong, right? Okay tell me, what does it mean when I say the shop is nearby (arugamai)? It means it is far away. It is not near, it is in the vicinity. But what do we say it is near. Are we not saying that? We say that man is gory (aghoram), what is the meaning? It means ugly. But what does it actually mean? It means they are beautiful. Because ghoram (gory) means ugly/repulsive. See, so do you agree that you may have studied the wrong meanings? So could you not have studied the wrong meaning for payirpu? You are the people who don’t want change culture, but you are the ones searching the internet. The opposite side is not even looking that side.”
Mathivadhani says, “The central point of what they spoke is the woman, not society. That is why they are scared of living together and love. I am a law student, I want to respond to them. That gentleman there seemed to be very agitated about living together. Let me clarify it for him. The culture that you wish to protect, in Sangam literature says Yaayum yaayum yaaragiyaro? Endhaiyum nundhaiyum emmurai kelir? Yaanum neeyum emmurai arindhanavo? Sembula peyalneer pola… Anbudai nenjam thaam kalandhanave. – this is nothing but living together. You do not have to search for any great meaning for this. I do not know who you are nor do you know who I am; I do not know who your father is nor do you know mine, we do not know where we are. When this is the situation, when two people are living together, if they have to separate, they will. As if when someone does love marriage and their everything is gone and if everything is intact in an arranged marriage. How many of you here have had an arranged marriage, your child has done potty, how many of you here would clean it without calling your wife?”
