Cuddalore Corporation Officials Use Crowbars For Tax Collection, Sparking Public Outrage

A viral video on social media has caused an uproar after it showed Corporation employees in Cuddalore visiting homes with crowbars to collect property taxes, even though taxpayers still had time before the deadline. The incident has sparked concerns among residents about the aggressive tactics being used to collect tax arrears.

After Cuddalore was officially declared a corporation, employees began actively pursuing outstanding tax payments, which have accumulated to several crores of rupees, in an effort to resolve the corporation’s financial issues. These employees have also been disconnecting water supply connections for households that have not paid their taxes, using crowbars to carry out the disconnections. There have been allegations that the employees are not allowing people enough time and are pressuring them to pay immediately, despite the official deadline of 31 March 2025 for tax payments. Interestingly, it appears that only homes with smaller arrears are being targeted, while those with larger tax debts have been left untouched.

The video shows a corporation employee confronting a homeowner and insisting on immediate payment, despite the homeowner explaining that she had time until 31 March to settle the tax. The homeowner also mentioned that the landlord was out, but she would pay as soon as they returned. However, the corporation employees responded by threatening, “Don’t listen to it and pay the tax immediately, or we will take action.” This exchange has raised alarm among the public, who are now questioning the corporation’s methods of tax collection.
