After two decades of marriage, actors Suriya and Jyotika have decided that one wedding apparently wasn’t enough.
And surely flop stars must get creative to keep the income flowing without a halt. Thus, probably came the idea of a ‘sequel’ – to generate attention, money and make the couple look relevant, when they aren’t.
The actor couple have renewed their wedding vows in a lavish Christian-style ceremony to mark 20 years of marriage, with their children Diya and Dev, Suriya’s brother Karthi, and close friends and family in attendance. The couple shared a carefully produced video of the ceremony on Instagram, complete with the aisle walk, emotional exchanges of vows and a montage of their white-wedding photographs.
And the name given to this second wedding-style spectacle? “The Sequel.”
Jyotika walked down the aisle with their son, while their daughter stood beside Suriya. The couple exchanged vows and became emotional during the ceremony, before sharing photographs from the occasion online.
Jyotika’s Instagram caption attempted to give the elaborate ceremony a philosophical makeover.
“THE SEQUEL – A vow renewal, celebrating our 20 years of love and war,” she wrote, adding that the ceremony was not about celebrating a “perfect marriage” but about “imperfections, adjustments, understanding” and sacrifices.

The whole presentation was less an ordinary anniversary celebration and more a polished celebrity production – complete with bridal gown, white tuxedo, church setting, emotional moments and a social-media-ready cinematic video.
The timing also makes the spectacle hard to ignore.
Suriya’s recent theatrical run has included major commercial setbacks, most notably Kanguva, which became one of the most talked-about failures of his recent career. His subsequent projects have also kept his box-office returns empty. Meanwhile, Jyotika’s theatrical appearances have been considerably fewer in recent years, with her trying to gain attention during the Cockroach protest in Jantar Mantar instigating youth to riot.
“The Sequel” seems to be more of an especially attention-grabbing title for a couple whose professional careers have not exactly been producing one blockbuster after another.
