Cracks emerge in AIADMK-BJP alliance over Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations

With just months left for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the AIADMK and the BJP in Tamil Nadu have engaged in a war of words over the conducting of Vinayaka Chaturthi visarjan.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had said that there would be no public celebration of Vinayagar Chathurthi. The Tamil Nadu government had issued an order that in view of the pandemic, public installation of Vinayakar statues, processions and immersions will not take place this year in the state.

On August 14, Hindu Munnani’s Chief Rama Gopalan (94) had issued a statement in which he categorically said that the Vinayaga Chathurthi celebration for this year would be held. Since then, the AIADMK government has been facing pressure from the BJP, Hindu Munnani and Indu Makkal Katchi to change its stance on the matter. BJP Tamil Nadu President Dr. L. Murugan issued a statement asking for the government to let the celebrations happen.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Kaivinai Kagithakuzh Vinayagar Silaigal Matrum Kaliman Bommaigal Thayarippalargal Sangam had moved the court challenging the government’s order to prohibit public installation of idols. They had said that idols have already been made and that they would suffer huge losses if the celebrations are not held.

But, the Madras High Court on Wednesday asked the people of the state to adhere to the orders of the government in connection with the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations. The Tamil Nadu government reiterated its position saying that they will follow the court orders and also keeping in mind the guidelines issued by Ministry of Home Affairs on July 29 banning religious functions across the country.

However, Dr. L. Murugan said that his party will follow Hindu Munnani, defying the government’s ban by installing more than 1.5 lakh Lord Ganesha idols across the state. He also called on Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday to urge the government to change its stand on the issue, citing the example of states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra where the state governments have allowed Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.

On August 19, BJP National Secretary H. Raja tweeted that the unleashing of police to guard against celebration of Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations was reprehensible. He asked the Tamil Nadu government to stop the sealing of places where Vinayaka idols are to be kept. In another tweet he added that it would be a struggle for the Hindus to celebrate Vinayaka Chathurthi this year.

But the issue developed a sour taste when Mr. H. Raja tweeted “Karnataka government grants permission to conduct Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations. Potent government”.

Following this, there has been an exchange of barbs from the BJP and the AIADMK.

Reacting to Mr. H. Raja’s comment, Raj Satyen of AIADMK had tweeted taking a jibe recalling the episodes when Mr. H. Raja insulted the High Court and when he hid behind the statement that it was his ‘admin’ who had put a tweet. Raj Satyen also took a casteist remark at H. Raja saying that ‘Amma government’ doesn’t need a certificate from ‘Sharmas’. He also asked H. Raja to prove his potence to get more votes independently.

The AIADMK IT Wing to responded sharply to Mr. Raja’s tweet saying “The Tamil Nadu government will not risk the people during the epidemic for the personal sectarianism of those who compete with NOTA! They have to prove their manhood by standing alone in Tamil Nadu and buying the deposit to show the heroism shown in mere word of mouth!”

In response to this, BJP IT & Social Media Wing State Convenor CTR Nirmal Kumar hit out at the AIADMK saying that the world knows about the ‘bent backs’ (referring to EPS and OPS) whose stood straight after visiting Delhi (referring to BJP’s role in the merger of AIADMK).

Today, addressing a press meet, Minister of Fisheries D. Jayakumar hit out at Mr. H. Raja saying that the words uttered by Mr. H. Raja’s words would suit only him. He warned Mr. Raja to not provoke the AIADMK.

Meanwhile, the Chennai city Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal met various Hindu organizations urging them comply with the government’s order. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court too has refused to strike down Tamil Nadu government’s order.
