Seventy-eight members of Hindu Munnani were arrested on Sunday during a protest against a three-day prayer meeting held at a government-aided Christian school in Tirunelveli district’s Thisayanvilai, as reported in Dinamalar.
According to reports, a prayer meeting was held from Friday to Sunday at Samaria St. John Higher Secondary School in Thisayanvilai. Hindu Munnani opposed the event, alleging that the Tamil Nadu government prohibits religious worship programmes from being conducted on the premises of government and government-aided educational institutions.
Claiming that the prayer meeting continued despite their objections, Hindu Munnani members staged a protest for the second consecutive day. The protesters began a march from the Sudalai Andavar Temple in Thisayanvilai and attempted to proceed towards the school campus.
The protest was led by Hindu Munnani State Vice-President Dr. Arasuraja. State Joint Organiser Ponnaiya, State Secretary Kutralanathan, Tirunelveli Division President Thanga Manohar, Division Secretaries Kannan and Brahmanayagam, BJP Tirunelveli South District President Tamilselvan, and Hindu Munnani Tirunelveli Suburban District President Vignesh, among others, participated in the demonstration.
Police intercepted the protesters before they reached the school and arrested 78 of them.
Reacting to the arrests, Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara Subramaniam condemned the police action, stating, “It is condemnable that Hindu Munnani members, who protested against the conduct of a prayer meeting at a government-aided Christian school in violation of the Tamil Nadu government’s order, have been arrested.”
