Congress appoints more than 400 executives to manage its TN unit, becomes laughing stock

Reminiscent of Cho’s classic film Muhammad Bin Tughlaq, the Congress on Saturday (January 2) appointed around 400 office bearers to manage its Tamil Nadu unit.

The Congress central command has appointed 32 Vice Presidents, 57 General Secretaries, 104 Secretaries, 56 Executive Committee Members, 32 Ex-Officio Members, 1 Treasurer and 200 odd other members and to the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee totaling to more than 400 hundred executives.

The demand for the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee to appoint new executives has been around for a long time. Appointed when Gnanasekan was president, the executives are still in office. In between, Ilangovan and Thirunavukkarasu served as leaders of the TNCC.

Alagiri, who is currently President of TNCC, made a serious effort to establish his own administrative setup. As a result, Congress yesterday approved a ‘jumbo’ list of more than 400 executives. Accordingly, Tamil Nadu Congress executive committee members now include State President Alagiri, Congress leader in Tamil Nadu Assembly Ramasamy, former Union ministers Chidambaram, Manishankar Iyer, Sudarsana Nachiyappan, former leaders Kumari Ananthan, Thangkabalu, Ilangovan, Krishnasamy, Thirunavukarasar, Peter Alphonse, Sellakumar, S.D, Nedunchezhiyan.

Ruby Manoharan has been made the Treasurer of the party. 32 new Vice Presidents have been appointed, including Nase Ramachandran, Balaraman, Gopanna, DN Muruganantham, Sorna Sethuraman, Damodaran and Vijayan.

57 people have been appointed as General Secretaries, including Selvam, Chiranjeevi, Thanikachalam, Rangapashyam, Vasantharaj, Janshirani, Kopi and Kandeepan. Among them, u Thirunavukkarasar’s son ST Ramachandran, KV Thangkabalu’s son Karthik Thangkabalu and EVKS Elangovan’s son Thirumagan EVR, actor Vijay Vasanth, son of late Vasantha Kumar  have also been given posts.

Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Minister P. Chidambaram who did not get any post said in a tweet that these appointments serve no purpose and that none of them will have any authority.

However, TNCC president KS Alagiri justified appointing sons of family members saying that they have been engaged in party works for a long time.
