Despite the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that claimed 66 lives just two months ago, new concerns have arisen with the illegal sale of alcohol in a butcher shop near Rasipuram in Namakkal district. This is particularly alarming because the sale is happening very close to a police station.
Residents report that a chicken butcher shop near the Namagiripettai police station begins selling illegal alcohol as early as 6 a.m. A tea shop on the Rasipuram-Senthamangalam road is also involved in the illicit liquor trade, providing tables and chairs for customers to drink on-site.
In a viral video, a woman is seen selling illegal liquor and stating the variety available. She says, “There is Veeran brand, you tell me what brand you want and I will tell you if I have it… there is Diamond rum.” The man who captured the video asked for diamond rum, and the woman was seen taking the rum from a mini freezer on the table before her. During this transaction, the woman warns another customer, “You cannot consume it here; come out fast,” and instructs the person filming to pay via GPay, pricing the bottle at 200 rupees.
A follow-up video from a tea shop on the Rasipuram-Senthamangalam road shows people openly consuming illegal liquor in broad daylight, with the establishment equipped with tables and chairs for patrons. Residents have called for immediate action to address these violations and curb the illegal alcohol trade in their area.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) commenced a three-day Akhil Bharatiya Samanvay Baithak (All India Coordination Meeting) in Palakkad, Kerala, on 31 August 2024. This event marks the first time the RSS is hosting its annual national coordination conclave in Kerala.
The meeting will see participation from 32 national office-bearers representing various organizations dedicated to social transformation aligned with RSS ideology. Among the attendees are 90 All India karyakartas responsible for overseeing Sangh activities, as well as 230 representatives, including RSS Sarsangchalak Mohan Bhagwat, Sarkaryawah (General Secretary) Dattatreya Hosabale, and Deputy Upa Sarkaryawah Krishnagopal, Mukunda C R, Arun Kumar, Alok Kumar, Ramdat Chakradhar, and Atul Limaye. BJP chief JP Nadda is also present at the conclave.
At the outset of the Akhil Bharatiya Samanvay Baithak meeting, attendees were briefed on the recent Wayanad landslide and the assistance provided by RSS volunteers. In anticipation of its 100th anniversary in September 2025, the RSS plans to launch five new initiatives aimed at social reform and nation-building. These initiatives include ‘Samajik Samrasta’, ‘Kutumb Prabodhan’, ‘Paryavaran Sanrakshan’, ‘Swadeshi’, and ‘Nagrik Kartavya’. The meeting will also address the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, including the removal of Sheikh Hasina from office on 5 August 2024 and the subsequent attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus. Following the conclusion of the meeting on 2 September 2024, a press conference will be held to provide further details, as noted by Ambekar.
The Baithak will address a range of issues pertinent to the nation. Discussions will centre on affiliated organisations’ input, viewpoints, and on-the-ground experiences to develop a cohesive national strategy. Sunil Ambekar noted that while the RSS inspires many organizations, it often expands and strengthens over time. He added that with 73,000 Shakhas across India, measuring the RSS’s success can be challenging, as its primary focus remains on social transformation.

The former IPS officer is accused of protecting idol smuggler Subash Kapoor and implicating a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Kader Batcha, who was arrested in an idol theft case. Based on Batcha’s representations, the CBI filed a new FIR on 8 August 2024, naming Pon Manickavel as an accused.
According to the FIR, Batcha had sought HC intervention in 2019 to direct the registration of a case against Manickavel. On 22 July 2022, the court ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the allegations made in Batcha’s representations and to proceed if any criminal activity was found.
The FIR alleges that the preliminary inquiry revealed that Manickavel was involved in offences such as falsely implicating Batcha, illegal arrest, and fabricating documents with false statements. Manickavel has denied the allegations, claiming that the accusations against him are a coordinated attempt to discredit him and asserting that they will not succeed.
According to Manickavel, CBI officers ‘illegally’ entered his house on 10 August 2024 and seized a few items. In his petition, Manickavel stated that international idol smugglers were targeting him. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted anticipatory bail to Manickavel, imposing a few conditions.
Bail Postponed Earlier
On 28 August 2024, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court postponed his anticipatory bail petition. Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy was presiding over the case.
Manickavel’s lawyer argued that the CBI lacked the authority to pursue the complaint since the court had explicitly directed the investigation to be led by an officer no lower than the rank of DIG appointed by the CBI director. The lawyer contended that the FIR did not reference any report from the designated officer. Also, the FIR was registered by a superintendent of police, with an additional superintendent of police assigned to the investigation. The lawyer also claimed that the trial court must review the officer’s report to decide whether an FIR should be registered. Consequently, Manickavel’s legal team argued that the search and seizure operations at his residence were unlawful and malicious.
Ponn Manickavel’s Path Of Integrity: An Insider’s Perspective
What’s the latest case involving former IGP Manickavel? Several negative narratives have been against him since the CBI started the probe. His supporters, however, question whether there’s a witch hunt against him. The CBI appears determined to arrest Manickavel based on Batcha’s accusations.
R. Varadharajan, a retired police officer and practising advocate, sheds light on the matter. Speaking to a YouTube channel, he references a Supreme Court ruling from the Lalit Kumar case and says that any complaint should initiate an FIR, followed by an investigation. If the offence is substantiated, the case should proceed; otherwise, the FIR should be dismissed. In this context, the CBI is pursuing Kader Batcha’s complaint as per a Madras High Court directive. Therefore, the probe is not unusual; it follows a standard procedure.
Varadharajan describes Ponn Manickavel as a straightforward and stringent officer known for his strict adherence to duty. Although this earned him a negative reputation within the department, the public held him in high regard. Varadharajan reminisces about the MGR-era system, which required officers to conduct grievance camps. While this system faded after MGR’s death, Manickavel was the only officer who continued this practice until retirement.

Kollywood stars Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan, A.R. Rahman, and Kamal Haasan, who have often remained silent on public issues under the DMK administration, are now fervently praising DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin’s ambitious “F4 race” project in Chennai. Their enthusiastic endorsements, including claims that the event will attract significant investments to Tamil Nadu, come as the race awaits the necessary FIA homologation certificate amid growing public concerns about safety, traffic disruptions, and noise pollution.
Kollywood Simps For Udhayanidhi’s F4
These actors went on to an extreme simp mode over the event, even suggesting that it will attract significant investments for the state.
The race will take place on a 3.7-kilometre circuit spanning four public roads around the Island Grounds in Chennai, provided that it receives the necessary homologation certificate from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) as demanded by the Madras High Court.
Kollywood actor Dhanush was the first to post his wishes on his X handle. He wrote, “Congratulations @udhaystalin bro on India’s first On Street Night F4 Championship and Indian Racing League. This pathbreaking sporting initiative will elevate Chennai’s stature as India’s destination for marquee sports events.”

In response to concerns raised in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by BJP spokesperson A.N.R. Prasad and represented by senior counsel V. Raghavachari and advocate Sunny Sheen Akara, the court mandated that a copy of the FIA certificate be provided to the petitioner’s counsel. The PIL aimed to halt the race due to concerns about public safety and logistical issues.
The court’s review also covered traffic management, as significant disruptions are expected during the event. An affidavit from V. Baskaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East), outlined the extensive traffic diversions planned for the race days. The court instructed the police to maintain smooth traffic flow on these diverted routes to minimize disruptions for drivers. A substantial police presence will be deployed around the race circuit, including multiple Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and constables. Parking arrangements have been made for 4,250 cars and 4,600 two-wheelers at 18 locations, including the University of Madras campus and nearby grounds.
Concerns were also raised about noise pollution affecting nearby hospitals, such as the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital. The court reiterated a February 19 directive that required measures to avoid disturbing in-patients during the race. Organizers have been ordered to install soundproofing or acoustic panels to manage hospital noise levels and ensure public safety during the event. However, during a press conference, the organizers seemed clueless about the decibel levels the event could generate. Given the fact that there are hospitals near the race circuit, none of the Kollywood stars have raised any question on these lines.
In what seems like an effort to get a good name for themselves using the F4 event, these Kollywood ‘stars’ have only praised the DMK scion instead of speaking up for the public.
Despite public concerns and logistical challenges surrounding the F4 race, leading Kollywood figures have chosen to lavish praise on Udhayanidhi Stalin’s initiative rather than addressing potential issues. Their overt support seems more focused on aligning with the DMK scion’s ambitions than voicing concerns for the public, raising questions about their priorities in championing public interests.

Reports indicate growing dissatisfaction within the AIADMK party as General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed frustration with district-level cadres who remained silent following Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai’s recent criticism.
On 25 August 2024, a BJP general meeting in Chennai featured Annamalai making severe criticism of Palaniswami and the party. Annamalai accused Palaniswami of opportunistically seizing the Chief Minister’s position and mocked him as a coward, further criticizing the AIADMK party. In response, ADMK members in districts such as Madurai and Sivagangai burned effigies of Annamalai. However, the reaction was minimal across most other districts.
This response has sparked considerable turmoil within Tamil Nadu’s political sphere. Former Telangana/Puducherry Governor and TN BJP leader Tamilisai also weighed in, advising Annamalai to show respect to party leaders and temper his rhetoric. Despite this, ADMK leaders have been notably reticent. Former ministers KP Munusamy, R.B.Udhaya Kumar, Sellur K. Raju, Kadambur Raju, D. Jayakumar, and others condemned Annamalai’s remarks, but many district secretaries only offered token protests, while senior leaders largely remained silent. This lack of unified opposition has deeply unsettled Palaniswami.
It is alleged that Palaniswami confided to close associates, questioning why district secretaries were reluctant to challenge Annamalai’s criticisms when they would have reacted strongly if former Gen Secy J Jayalalithaa was being discussed. He expressed disappointment that despite allowing district secretaries to retain their positions despite various complaints, they now hesitate to defend him against Annamalai’s allegations.
Senior ADMK members argue that focusing on conflicts with the BJP rather than the DMK, which they view as the true adversary, is misguided. This stance has contributed to the subdued reaction to Annamalai’s harsh criticism, further aggravating Palaniswami. Additionally, the strained relationships among senior leaders are believed to be another factor behind the lack of strong opposition to Annamalai.
What Did Annamalai Say?
On 25 August 2024, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai came down heavily on the state’s opposition parties, including the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), putting an end to speculation of a BJP alliance with them. He also condemned former AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), labelling him “the highest bidding agent of the party.”
Annamalai recounted how EPS came to power. “Mr Edappadi Palaniswami, in your hometown Siluvampalayam, a murder occurred during a dispute between brothers. After the incident, one person was arrested and imprisoned, while another hid in the Western Ghats. You are the one who grabbed the legs of a senior ADMK minister who is currently serving as a minister in the DMK. After closing the case, you stood in the panchayat election and faced defeat. So, please don’t lecture me about honesty.”
Annamalai then criticized Palaniswami. He said the latter ascended to power within the party through a tender and bidding system in Koovathur. “To tell a dignified farmer’s son Annamalai, who signed in green ink for ten years and never borrowed a single penny, ‘tharkuri’ (illiterate) Palaniswami, has no locus standi to speak about me. This is arrogance. In 2026, the party run by Puratchi Thalaivar and Puratchi Thalaivi is now run by “frogs in the well.” You will be thrown out, not even to fourth place.”
He then explained why the BJP had severed ties with the AIADMK. In 2019, EPS mocked the PM, claiming he would not win and, therefore, would not participate in the candidate nominations.
Following that incident, the BJP decided to avoid any alliance with the ADMK. He concluded by asserting that both Dravidian parties are adversaries. He added that for the BJP to establish its dominance, the 2026 election represents a ripe opportunity for the party.
Why Annamalai Severely Criticized EPS & AIADMK
At the same meeting, Annamalai explained why the BJP had severed ties with the AIADMK. In 2019, EPS mocked the PM, claiming he would not win and, therefore, would not participate in the candidate nominations. Following that incident, the BJP decided to avoid any alliance with the ADMK.
On 27 August 2024, during a press conference, Annamalai reaffirmed his stance, stating, “The criticism directed towards EPS was 100% truthful and will not be retracted, not even by 1%. Former ministers can say whatever they want and ridicule me by calling me ‘tharkuri‘, mocking my journey to study, mocking my work, and everything else. That’s okay. But should I fold my hands and say, ‘You have 40 years of experience and I only have 3 years of experience’? I didn’t come here to say that. Whether it’s the internal or external party, my style won’t change. I came here for a political change. After I became the president, look at how the party has progressed. We have contested alone for the local body and Lok Sabha. We contested alone so that the party will grow.”
Kollywood director Pa. Ranjith has revealed the different side of Tamil actor Rajinikanth, who projects himself as a devout Hindu off-screen. This public persona has been questioned since his film choice “Kaala” (2018), which was deeply Hindu-phobic and cast doubts on the actor’s sincerity as a devotee.
In a recent interview, Pa. Ranjith asserted that Rajinikanth trusted him and his political perspectives. The actor supported and accepted everything Ranjith wrote, including the dialogues and the overall concept. This assertion raises questions about Rajinikanth and whether his spiritual image is only intended to resonate with a wider audience.
Before the Hindi release of “Thangalaan” on 6 September 2024, actor Vikram, director Pa. Ranjith, and actress Parvathy Thiruvothu appeared at the Pinkvilla Masterclass. In a Q&A session with the audience, a fan inquired about how Ranjith crafted the role for Rajinikanth portrayal in Kabali (2016) and Kaala. Ranjith responded that Rajinikanth took 15 takes to perfect his performance and embraced every concept and ideology Ranjith presented.
Pa. Ranjith said,“Superstar believed in me, and he believes in my craft, concept, and politics. He supported me and accepted my writing, including the dialogues and everything. Many funny moments happened in the films Kaala and Kabali. But I asked him for shots and said, “No, please, sir, we’ll do one more.” We did almost 15 takes in Kabali, and he understood my art and craft, so he supported me. I balanced what I wanted to convey to my audience and held the superstar’s image.”
Hidden Hindumisia Of Kaala
‘Kabali‘ (2016) marked the first collaboration between director Pa. Ranjith and Rajinikanth. Their successful partnership led Rajinikanth to accept Ranjith’s next project, ‘Kaala‘ (2018), despite its controversial themes. Ranjith intentionally crafted this film with Rajinikanth to counter Mani Ratnam’s ‘Nayakan‘, presenting it from a Dalit perspective. However, it fell short of capturing the depth of Ratnam’s Vellu Nayakar. Ranjith focuses on delivering subtle ideological messages rather than creating an engaging plot, which results in an overly dramatic and preachy film. The second half of Kaala became particularly didactic, causing many viewers to lose interest. While audiences can tolerate slower-paced films, excessive emphasis on political messages can make it challenging to sit through it.
Kaala is Ranjith’s most brazen passion project, in which his ideology is infused both brazenly and in covert subtexts. While the core plot concerns land rights for the urban poor living in Dharavi, the Rajinikanth-starring film is needlessly Hinduphobic from the start to the end.
While batting for the land rights of slum dwellers of Dharavi is noble, Ranjith uses this theme in Kaala to spread his misguided Hinduphobic ideology and politics. For instance, the film respects pork as haram but normalizes eating beef.
See the shop name, which is just opposite Kaala’s house. Kaala’s wife openly states that she’d feed her husband beef but looks down upon her son, who is a “vegetarian”.
Choice of Names – Hindu Villains & Communist Heroes
The villains’ names are telling – the betraying slum dweller is a Hindu named Perumalsami. The brutal police antagonist is Pankaj Patel. The greedy politician is Vishnu Pai. Finally, the ultra-egoistic, power-hungry main villain is a practising Hindu named Haridev Abhyankar. Ranjith carefully chose these first and last names.
Contrast this choice with the names of people on the good side. Kaala, played by Rajinikanth, hails Lenin as a revolutionary. He even names his son after him.
Historically, Lenin’s revolution, the resulting civil war and famines, and the domestic repression that he led against dissidents and scapegoats directly led to the deaths of over 8 million citizens of the Russian Empire, many by starvation, torture, or summary execution. Yet the film freely employs Marxist symbology – notice the Hammer and Sickle in the animation flashback.
Even though these names subconsciously influence the viewers, Pa. Ranjith is well within his rights to name his characters in Kaala as he deems fit—as do other filmmakers. Politically, the bad side belongs to the Navbharat National Party (a proxy for the BJP), whichwins all of Maharashtra except for Dharavi. Hari, played by Rajinikanth, supports this party by speaking to people in a format titled ‘Dil Ki Awaaz’ (a proxy for Man Ki Baat).
A Dig At Political Hindus
The good side belongs to the oppressed people’s Republic Party, which won the Dharavi elections. The area is an impregnable “Kaala Kila” that the nationalists cannot win over. The party’s flag is basically the tricolour Indian flag, with the saffron replaced by Blue.
Where Ranjith overdoes his indulgence is in his display of brazen Hinduphobia. The evil builders who plan to steal the slum dweller’s land is ‘Manu Realty’ andthey intend to rename Dharavi to Dandakaranya Nagar.
Kaala meets his aides at Bhagavan Gautam Buddha Vihar. His house is full of Buddha idols, and there are no visible Hindu idols. Kaala offers Dua in the local mosque. Yet he doesn’t partake in Ganesh Chaturthi and even uses the festival crowd to meet his ex-lover, Zareena, privately at her home.
Hari Abhyankar (always adorned in white) is a devotee of Ram (notice the idol) and Krishna. He treats people based on some hierarchy—some must stand, some must sit on the floor, and guests must fall at his feet before leaving. He is also misogynistic and judges single mothers. In this single scene, the passionate Zareena and Lenin turn from the bad side to the good Kaala’s side. This is patchy writing.
Ranjith considers shaking hands as equality and doesn’t like falling on anyone’s feet. But charan sparsh is not merely a Hindu tradition – it is Buddhist too. In Theravadin countries such as Sri Lanka, when one goes before one’steacher, to “open one’s mind up to receive instructions,” one bows and recites the phrase, “Okāsa ahaṃ bhante vandāmi” (“I pay homage to you venerable sir”) Ranjith will now become pro-prostration as it is a Buddhist practice too?
Kaala Extolls EVR
The irony is that Ranjith idolizes EVR in Kaala. The film shows an EVR Chowk and statue in his Dharavi set piece. This film plot clearly shows how Ranjith has not read much of what EVR had to say about Ambedkar, questioning his integrity, the Keelvenmani massacre, etc.
His biggest Hinduphobic gesture compares the hero Kaala to Ravana and the villain to Ram. The book on Kaala’s desk is Raavana Kaaviyam, and Kaala is addressed as the leader of the Asura clan.
The climax is intercut with a Ramayana discourse organized at Hari Dada’s house while his men brutally massacre the innocent slum-dwellers of Dharavi who are compared to Ravana’s heads. As one head of Ravana falls, another rises. The great Hindu epic is used as a metaphor for their resistance with a role reversal.
The film offers no real solution to the redevelopment of Dharavi—Asia’s largest slum—except asking people to resist any efforts that may interfere with their landholding rights. Aspirations for a better life and more space for the urban poorare relegated to the sidelines as minor points.
Why Kaala Flopped
The film largely romanticizes slums, poverty, and people’s existence in squalid conditions. Its lyrics question the need for any high-rise building.
The government must allot housing units fairly. It is crucial to oppose corruption in such allotment. But Rajinikanth, in the Pa. Ranjith film Kaala, opposes the redevelopment plans.
Under the guise of the core theme, a lot of Hinduphobic ideology was pushed into the film, which barely had any engagement quotient in the second half. Land rights for the urban poor are okay, but pushing Hinduphobia under this guise is not okay.
The film flopped due to a lack of a proper story and engaging screenplay. It didn’t fail because scheming casteists plotted against Ranjith to boycott the film (even though the movie encourages protests). The film’s closing image has a blue flag with the Buddhist Chakra and the words “Jai Bheem” on top. Meanwhile, the camera relegates the tricolour to the sidelines. This is an indelible Kaala mark on Rajinikanth – the nationalist.

On 29 August 2024, the Madras High Court granted conditional approval for India’s allegedly first Formula 4 night street race, set to take place on a 3.7-km circuit around Island Grounds in Chennai on 31 August and 1 September 2024. The approval hinges on the organizers securing a homologation certificate from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), which must be obtained by noon on the race day.
The First Division Bench, led by Acting Chief Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice P.B. Balaji, emphasized the critical importance of this certification. The court warned that the race could not proceed if the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and Racing Promotions Private Limited (RPPL), the licensee for Formula 4 races, fail to present the FIA certificate within the stipulated timeframe. This ruling follows submissions by Advocate-General P.S. Raman, who explained that FIA typically issues such certifications just hours before an event begins.
In response to concerns raised in a public interest litigation (PIL) by BJP spokesperson A.N.R. Prasad, represented by senior counsel V. Raghavachari and advocate Sunny Sheen Akara, the court mandated that a copy of the FIA certificate be shared with the petitioner’s counsel. The PIL sought to prevent the race, citing public safety and logistical concerns.
The court’s scrutiny also extended to traffic management, given the significant disruptions anticipated due to the event. An affidavit from V. Baskaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East), detailed the extensive traffic diversions planned for the race days. The court directed the police to ensure smooth traffic flow on the diverted routes to minimize inconvenience for motorists. A robust police presence, comprising multiple Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and constables, will be deployed in both the inner and outer peripheries of the race circuit. The police have also arranged parking facilities for 4,250 cars and 4,600 two-wheelers across 18 designated locations, including the University of Madras campus and other nearby grounds.
Sound Pollution & Hospitals Near Race Circuit
The court also addressed concerns related to nearby hospitals, including the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital. Recalling a February 19 directive by a previous Division Bench, the court reiterated the need to avoid disturbing in-patients during the race. The organizers have been ordered to install sound silence panels or acoustic sound panels to control noise within the hospitals, ensuring the highest degree of public safety during the event.
At a press conference the race organizers, when asked about the sound-related issues, said, “It will not affect the hospitals. We are putting sound barriers. We have taken NOC from the hospital. Traffic police is giving proper guidance. Health department is giving guidance. We are taking all the departments together, there is no such issue or problem.”
The organizers appeared to be clueless about the potential noise levels this event would generate. With hospitals less than a kilometre away from the race track and with the race cars expected to reach speeds of 200-240 km/h, it is not clear how much the sound barriers will work. When asked about the expected decibel levels, which should ideally stay within the safe limit of 70 dB, the organizers seemed clueless, raising further concerns about the event’s impact on public health and safety. They said,“I do not have the exact number, but we got the directions andaccordingly we are placing at certain critical areas, sound barriers are being placed to ensure that these things are taken care of, especially in the areas of the hospital.”
The organizers of India's 1st Night Race event in #chennai city #TamilNadu, don't have any idea on the noise level that this event will generate…There are hospitals at 700m from this city road..Cars will be racing at 200-240kmph.. Too much risk involved for #TNGovt ?? pic.twitter.com/gI9aAF4Qa7
According to WION reporter Sidharth MP, this is the second time that event organizers have responded in this manner. They have consistently avoided disclosing specific numbers regarding the event’s expected decibel levels.
I'm not sure of the name of this senior person. However, this is the second time that event organizers have replied this way. They have never revealed specific numbers on the event's expected decibel level.
Madras HC dealt a significant setback to former IGP Ponn Manickavel by postponing his anticipatory bail plea in a CBI case probing him in an idol smuggling case. Meanwhile, supporters of Manickavel, including retired police officer R. Varadharajan, have rallied behind him, praising his integrity and dedication to duty.
Court Rejects Anticipatory Bail
On 28 August 2024, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court postponed the anticipatory bail petition of AG Ponn Manickavel, the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Idol Wing, in response to a case filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy was presiding over the case. The FIR indicates that the CBI in Delhi initiated the investigation following a Madras High Court directive for a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Manickavel. The accusations involve Manickavel allegedly falsifying documents, acting to protect idol smuggler Subhash Kapoor, and wrongfully implicating I Kader Batcha, the petitioner and former deputy superintendent of police, in a criminal case.
Manickavel’s lawyer argued that the CBI lacked the authority to pursue the complaint since the court had explicitly directed the investigation to be led by an officer no lower than the rank of DIG appointed by the CBI director. The lawyer contended that the FIR did not reference any report from the designated officer, and the FIR was registered by a superintendent of police, with an additional superintendent of police assigned to the investigation.
The CBI appears determined to arrest Manickavel based on accusations from Kader Batcha, a former DSP previously apprehended by Manickavel for smuggling temple idols.
R. Varadharajan, a retired police officer and practising advocate, sheds light on the matter. Speaking to a YouTube channel, he references a Supreme Court ruling from the Lalit Kumar case, stipulating that any complaint should initiate an FIR, followed by an investigation.
Varadharajan also recounted an incident involving Manickavel’s integrity. A senior officer was accused of illegally allocating government plots to IPS and IAS officers. This senior officer took land from Manapakkam, and when a landowner resisted selling the land under duress, the senior officer instructed his subordinates to forcibly take the landowner to Nandabakkam station and have him beaten up. The next day, the landowner died by suicide, leaving a letter naming the senior officer as responsible for his death.
As the Superintendent of Police, Manickavel visited the scene, discovered the letter, and ordered the senior officer arrested. Varadharajan noted that this led to a conflict, with the senior officer appealing to the DGP for intervention. Despite the DGP’s pleas, Manickavel firmly refused to intervene, standing steadfastly with the principles of justice and the public interest.
Retired police officer R. Varadharajan stated that Manickavel was assigned to the Idol Wing, a department often given to suspended or discredited officers, or those who requested it due to personal issues. However, former CM J. Jayalalitha allocated the position to Manickavel at the request of a senior officer. Despite the challenging circumstances, Manickavel tackled cases with determination, leading to conflicts with businessmen, politicians, and the DGP. Varadharajan questioned, “Is this the fate of an honest officer?”
He then recounted Manickavel’s actions in the Idol Wing. When an idol went missing from the Kapaleeshwarar temple, there was news that it was in someone’s home before the Kumbhabishekam. Manickavel, despite being a police officer and the businessman being wealthy and a devoted follower, pursued the case diligently.
Varadharajan said, “An idol was lost in Kabaleeshwarar temple. Immediately, if you ask what did he do? There was news that before the Kumbhabisekam, the idol was in someone’s home. Manickavel, a police officer, and the someone was very wealthy. However, the wealthy man was also a good man and devout. But you should not take the idol from the temple and keep it in your house it is against the law, and we can arrest the person immediately, so when the idol is lost, the alleged should be responsible, right? Manickavel went to arrest him. Edappadi Palaniswami was supporting the wealthy man and asked Manickavel not to arrest the wealthy man when he was the chief minister. The DGP also told him not to arrest, but Manickavel didn’t listen. Now what? He developed hostility with the wealthy people, the DGP, and there were two smugglers involved called Subash Chandra Kapoor and Deenadayalan.” He also arrested a woman Joint Commissioner from the HR&CE department, accusing her of being involved and responsible for the issue.
Former cop Varadharajan also emphasized Ponn Manickavel’s remarkable dedication to his duties. Despite being denied a vehicle by higher officers, Manickavel took an auto-rickshaw to seize a smuggled idol while still on duty. Varadharajan asserts that Manickavel was well-regarded during Jayalalitha’s tenure due to his straightforwardness. He recounts an incident where, at 2 AM, Manickavel stopped an ADMK party member for speeding. The party member flaunted his political connections and drove off, but the next day, Jayalalitha suspended the functionary.
In another incident, Varadharajan recalled how Ponn Manickavel intervened when he learned from ADMK’s Sasikala that a Sub-Inspector had kidnapped someone over a financial dispute. Manickavel, acting undercover, apprehended the SI in his own quarters and initiated a case against him. He also physically assaulted the SI with a baton in the office, which led to criticism and a tarnished reputation within the police force. Varadharajan recalls that while Manickavel faced opposition and rumors, this incident highlighted his commitment to honesty, revealing the SI’s misconduct.
Varadharajan further noted that Manickavel’s dedication to duty transcended religious boundaries. He recounted an incident where a Muslim officer sought to marry another woman according to Islamic law, but the officer’s wife requested assistance. Manickavel intervened, threatening the officer with dismissal based on moral grounds, and successfully reunited the family by prioritizing ethics over strict legalities.

A 90-foot panchaloha statue of Lord Hanuman caused Americans, especially Christians, and their media to exhibit blatant Hindumisia. Church groups even protested at the temple, which is ironically a private land, against what they called a “demonic god”.
Christians who preach tolerance but in fact, practice intolerance must know that India is home to over 28,000 churches, with the Catholic Church being the second-largest landowner in the country after the Indian government. The Church’s vast land holdings are estimated to cover around seven crore hectares (17.29 crore acres), valued at approximately ₹20,000 crore. It has many Jesus statues too, some significantly larger than the Texas Hanuman statue
Here is a list of India’s 15 largest Jesus statues, standing undisturbed, even though India is not a Christian country.
1. Pune, Maharashtra
A bronze statue of Jesus Christ was unveiled at the World Peace Dome within the MIT World Peace University in Pune, Maharashtra, on November 22, 2022. This statue, representing the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joins 54 other statues inside the 263-foot-high dome.
2. Ambala, Haryana
A 5.5ft tall Jesus statue at the British-era Holy Redeemer Catholic Church is in Ambala Cantonment in Haryana. Built in 1848 when the East India Company relocated its base from Karnal to Ambala, the church is one of the oldest in the region.
3.Ramanagara, Karnataka
In 2020, Congress’s DK Shivakumar laid the foundation stone for a 114-ft-tall Jesus statue in Kanakapura, Ramanagara district of Karnataka. This was protested by Hindu organizations but 800 families donated ₹1 lakh each for the construction of the statue. Now, a symbolic 5-foot-tall Jesus statue stands there. The 114-foot (34.7-meter) tall white granite statue, under construction, will be slightly smaller than the Rio de Janeiro monolith but will feature a larger base. This statue of Jesus is set to rival the size of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer.
4. Bengaluru, Karnataka
A 35-foot-tall statue of Jesus Christ was unveiled at Mount Olive, Gethsemane Garden, Hennur Bande in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Weighing 20 tonnes, the statue is crafted from fibre-reinforced plastic and reinforced cement concrete. Sculpted by artists from Kolkata, it was constructed for ₹65 lakh and took one year to complete.
5. Mumbai, Maharashtra
A statue of Jesus Christ is located near the Infant Jesus Chapel, which is under the supervision of St. Anthony’s Parish in Kharodi village, Malad West, Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was in the news in 2016 for ‘seeping water’ from the statue, which turned out to be a leaky drain.
6.Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
The tallest statue of Jesus ever made stands in Trivandrum, Kerala. Measuring 10 meters tall and weighing three tons, it is located at a Christian Syro-Malankara college in the city. Made from fibre, wax, and resin, and covered with white marble, the statue features eyes that glow in the dark. It was created in memory of a former student who passed away in a car accident.
7.Velankanni, Tamil Nadu
The huge Sacred Heart of Jesus statue is located at Our Lady of Vailankanni Church in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu. This Catholic church is situated on the coast of Nagapattinam.
8. Mumbai, Maharashtra
The Jesus statue at Mount Mary Church, also known as Mount Mary Basilica, is a Christian religious icon located in Bandra, Mumbai, Maharashtra. The church is one of the oldest and most prominent Roman Catholic basilicas in Mumbai. The first edifice was built in the 16th century.
9.Vizhinjam, Tamil Nadu
The statue of Jesus Christ, unveiled by Archbishop Soosa Pakiam M. in Vizhinjam, Tamil Nadu, is designed to reflect the number of years Jesus is believed to have lived. In comparison, the Rio de Janeiro statue is 98 feet tall with arms extending 92 feet wide.
10. Assolna, Goa
The Monument of Christ the King, also known as Cristo Rei, is a striking structure situated in Assolna, Goa. It was constructed and consecrated in 1934. It was inspired by a similar structure in Karachi and was completed in 1937. Initially envisioned by Fr. Vincent Giminez S.J. and built in Karachi in 1931, the monument influenced Assolna’s Domingo Gaspar Sebastiao Silva Lobo to recreate it in his hometown.

Inspired by Germany’s Cologne Cathedral, it features a 54-foot statue of Saint Philomena, a 3rd-century Greek saint, and has a main hall that seats 800. Originally a small church built in the 18th century, it was expanded under Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV.

BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai’s departure to the UK for the prestigious Chevening Gurukul Fellowship has prompted the party to form a state committee to steer operations in his absence. Led by H. Raja as Convener, the committee includes senior leaders who will coordinate with the State Core Committee to manage party activities. This strategic move ensures continuity in leadership while Annamalai is engaged in the three-month program at Oxford University.
State BJP chief Annamalai departed for the United Kingdom on August 28, 2024, to participate in the prestigious Chevening Gurukul Fellowship for Leadership and Excellence at Oxford University, a three-month program.
In order to steer the party in his absence, the BJP has formed a state committee comprising senior state leaders. National Executive Member H. Raja is the Convener of this committee.
The committee also includes State Vice Presidents M. Chakravarthy and Professor P. Kanagasabapathi, state General Secretaries M. Muruganandam and Prof. Raama Sreenivasan, and State Treasurer S.R. Sekhar.
The BJP stated that this committee will discuss party activities with the State Core Committee and make decisions.
“Each member of the Coordination Committee will look after activities in 1 or 2 zones as to be decided by the State President and Convener of the Coordination Committee”, the statement said.

Annamalai’s trip to London sparked curiosity and raised questions about his leadership amidst his absence. However, this move is not a sign of disengagement but rather a strategic decision. Much like other leaders who effectively managed their roles virtually, Annamalai remains actively involved in his party affairs. Through digital means, he ensures his influence within the BJP remains strong.
With the party’s robust structure and the upcoming Rural Local Body Elections on the horizon, Annamalai’s leadership continues to be secure, demonstrating the adaptability of modern political strategy.
