Lalu Prasad Yadav & Tejashwi Yadav Are Dividing Society: Bihar Dy CM

Lalu Prasad Yadav & Tejashwi Yadav Are Dividing Society: Bihar Dy CM

The ongoing exchange of political barbs between the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar has intensified after RJD leaders Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav criticised BJP’s Hindu Swabhiman Yatra which Union Minister Giriraj Singh led. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha responded to the criticisms by accusing Lalu and Tejashwi of creating divisions in society and stoking fear among the Muslim community.

“RJD leadership often spreads the narrative that Muslims’ existence in India is under threat unless they support the RJD in elections. I want to ask Lalu Prasad Yadav to remember communal riots in Bhagalpur and the incident of Biharsharif,” Sinha said. He claimed that these incidents happened due to the policies of Lalu Prasad Yadav when he was in power. The Deputy Chief Minister praised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stating that his governance, which follows the vision of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has ensured peace and harmony in the state. Sinha’s remarks reflect the broader political tensions in Bihar, where communal harmony and the state’s political history are frequently invoked during electoral discourse. Both the BJP and the RJD have long been at odds over issues of caste, religion, and governance, with each party accusing the other of disrupting the social fabric for political gain.

The political discourse in Bihar has intensified, with Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav targeting the ruling alliance, particularly over the Hindu Swabhiman Yatra. Lalu Prasad Yadav criticised Union Minister Giriraj Singh for allegedly fostering hatred in society, calling him “habitual” in spreading communal discord. He also accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of being a “silent spectator” to these divisive tactics, suggesting that the Chief Minister and Union Minister share a similar governance style.

Tejashwi Yadav also warned that if communal violence erupts in Bihar, Nitish Kumar would be responsible. He also condemned the remarks made by BJP’s Araria MP Pradeep Kumar Singh, who controversially stated that people must “become Hindu” to stay in Araria. Tejashwi said that these provocative statements are reflective of a broader strategy by the BJP to incite communal tensions. Giriraj Singh, in response to these accusations, said that Lalu and Tejashwi Yadav are making such statements to protect Bangladeshi Muslims and Rohingya Muslims.

Bombay HC Grants Bail To Chhota Rajan In Hotelier Murder Case, Suspends Life Term

Bombay HC Grants Bail To Chhota Rajan In Hotelier Murder Case, Suspends Life Term

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted bail to mafia don Rajendra S. Nikalje, alias Chhota Rajan and suspended his life sentence in the case of the sensational murder of Mumbai hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001.

On May 30 this year, a Special MCOCA Court had pronounced Rajan and others guilty of the sensational murder and handed down his second sentence of life imprisonment in the past nearly nine years. He had filed an appeal against the life sentence which is now suspended by a division bench of Justice Revati Mohite-Dere and Justice Prithviraj K. Chavan, till the outcome of the high court plea, and also granted him bail. However, Rajan is unlikely to be released as he is already convicted and serving a life sentence for the 2011 daylight killing of a crime journalist, Jyotirmoy Dey, at Powai, which he is serving in New Delhi’s Tihar Central Jail.

Shetty, the owner of the Golden Crown Hotel in south Mumbai, was shot dead by two gunmen on May 4, 2001, with the hit ordered by Rajan. The mafia don was a bitter rival of the absconder terrorist don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, triggering a huge sensation in the hospitality and political circles.

After the lengthy trial, the Special MCOCA Court Special Judge A M Patil found Rajan guilty and sentenced him to life in jail, along with other accused, Rahul Pansare, Ajay Mohite, and Pramod Dhonde. Shetty had become a victim in an alleged extortion case and had been provided with police security, which was withdrawn a couple of months before he was targeted and killed.

Incidentally, the Shetty murder case was among the dossier of 71 major offences that were handed over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to the Indonesia government after Rajan was nabbed in the tourist haven of Bali and subsequently deported to India in November 2015.

Had ‘Good Agreements’ With PM Modi On Expanding Iran-India Ties, Says Pezeshkian

Had 'Good Agreements' With PM Modi On Expanding Iran-India Ties, Says Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday said that he had “good agreements” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about expanding cooperation between Iran and India during Tuesday’s bilateral meeting between the two leaders held in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

“We had good agreements about expanding cooperation between Iran and India, aiming to create prosperity and security for both countries and region, as well as the idea of creating a communication network between the countries of the region, the results of which will be seen in the economies of the two countries,” Pezeshkian posted on X late Wednesday afternoon. During the meeting – the first since Pezeshkian’s election as the ninth President of Iran in July following Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash on May 19 – PM Modi had reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening the age-old bilateral ties with Iran.

The Iranian president, while referring to Israel’s assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 30 – the day he took over as Iran’s President – said that the killing had hampered the goals set by his government, including enhancing reconciliation inside Iran as well as boosting ties with neighbouring and regional countries. “We believe that war hampers the development of countries, and that is why we have been, and are, decisively seeking to prevent the spread of tension and conflict in the region,” Pezeshkian said. Prime Minister Modi, meanwhile, expressed deep concern over the widening of the conflict in West Asia and reiterated India’s call to de-escalate the situation.

The two leaders reaffirmed Chabahar’s significance for reconstruction and redevelopment of Afghanistan and enhancing trade and economic linkages with Central Asia. As India reckoned that the development of Chabahar Port is the biggest pillar of New Delhi’s ongoing cooperation with Tehran, Pezeshkian expressed hope that the implementation of bilateral agreements, including the one to develop Chabahar Port, is accelerated.

“The strengthening of economic cooperation among regional nations will promote welfare and security of our countries,” said the Iranian President, adding that he has made the proposal to create a communication network among regional countries, and BRICS can provide the ground for pursuing that idea.

Natural For Political Parties To Seek Alliance With AIADMK, Says EPS

Natural For Political Parties To Seek Alliance With AIADMK, Says EPS

AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), said on Wednesday that it was natural for political parties in the state to seek an alliance with his party as it was a strong political force having been in power for over 30 years.

On Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin’s remarks that AIADMK’s reputation had declined in the state, Palaniswami told party workers at Vanavasi in Mettur Taluk that the vote share of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had decreased in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while AIADMK had made gains.

He noted that, in the Lok Sabha elections for the Namakkal seat, the AIADMK candidate lost by 3,00,000 votes in 2019 but narrowed the margin to 30,000 votes in 2024, demonstrating the party’s growing support.

EPS added that AIADMK’s vote share increased by 1 per cent in the 2024 elections compared to 2019, while DMK’s vote share dropped from 33.92 per cent in 2019 to 26.50 per cent in 2024, a 7 per cent decline.

Palaniswami also responded to CM Stalin’s allegations that AIADMK had done nothing for the people of Tamil Nadu, calling the former’s statements blatant lies.

He recalled the Rs 562 crore scheme initiated by the AIADMK government to divert surplus water from Mettur to refill 100 water bodies in Salem district.

He claimed that DMK had stalled this project, which was supposed to be completed within 12 months, for the past 41 months.

Additionally, EPS criticised the DMK government for borrowing Rs 3.5 lakh crore in just three and a half years despite a revenue increase of Rs 56,000 crore.

He contrasted this with the AIADMK government’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming that despite facing a revenue loss of Rs 1 lakh crore, his government implemented various schemes. At the same time, the DMK has failed to deliver on its promises since coming to power.

Palaniswami highlighted the rising costs of essential commodities under the DMK regime, stating that people are now struggling with inflation and that even building homes had become more difficult compared to the AIADMK’s tenure when prices were under control.

PM Modi To BRICS Leaders: No Place For Double Standards On Terrorism, Terror Financing

PM Modi To BRICS Leaders: No Place For Double Standards On Terrorism, Terror Financing

Reiterating his call for dialogue and diplomacy, and not war, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged firm support of all BRICS members on the issue of terrorism, emphasising that there can be no “double standards” on the serious matter.

“We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war. And just as we were able to overcome a challenge like Covid together, we are certainly able to create new opportunities to ensure a secure, strong and prosperous future for future generations,” said PM Modi in his remarks at the closed plenary of the 16th BRICS Summit in the Russian city of Kazan.

“To counter terrorism and Terror financing, we need the single-minded, firm support of all. There is no place for double standards on this serious matter. We must take active steps to stop youth radicalisation in our countries. We must work together on the long pending matter in the UN of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,” he added.

The restricted format of the summit meeting had in attendance Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chinese President Xi Jinping, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Luis Ecker Vieira.

In his remarks, PM Modi stated that the grouping’s approach must remain people-centric. He insisted that a message should go out that BRICS is not a “divisive” organisation but one that works in the interest of humanity.

“Our meeting is taking place at a time when the world is facing several pressing challenges such as wars, economic uncertainty, climate change and terrorism. The world is talking about the North-South divide and the East-West divide. Preventing inflation and ensuring food, energy, health, and water security are matters of priority for all countries worldwide.

“And, in this era of technology, new challenges have emerged, such as cyber deepfake and disinformation. At such a time, there are high expectations of BRICS. I believe that as a diverse and inclusive platform, BRICS can play a positive role in all areas,” he maintained.

The BRICS alliance, an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, added four new members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates—on January 1, 2024.

Addressing the gathering of leaders, Prime Minister Modi said that BRICS is an organisation willing to evolve with time, and India is ready to welcome new members as ‘Partner Countries’.

“In this regard, all decisions should be made by consensus, and the views of BRICS founding members should be respected. The Guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures adopted during the Johannesburg summit should be complied with by all members and partner countries,” remarked PM Modi.

He said the BRICS grouping was created by the confluence of different viewpoints and ideologies, which is a source of inspiration for the world as it fosters positive cooperation.

“The hopes, aspirations and expectations of the countries of the Global South must also be kept in mind. During our Voice of Global South Summits and G20 Presidency, India put the voices of these countries on the global stage. I am pleased that these efforts are also being strengthened under BRICS,” opined PM Modi.

Prime Minister Modi also discussed collectively advocating reforms of global institutions, such as the UN Security Council, multilateral development banks, and the World Trade Organization.

There Will Be Two MPs From Wayanad As I Will Be Unofficial One: Rahul Gandhi

There Will Be Two MPs From Wayanad As I Will Be Unofficial One: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former Wayanad Lok Sabha MP, on Wednesday said that “from now on, there will be two MPs from Wayanad.”

“While Priyanka Gandhi will be the official MP, I will be the unofficial MP,” said Rahul Gandhi to thunderous applause from the mammoth crowd who had come to hear Priyanka Gandhi.

The Congress leader later filed her nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, which goes to the polls on November 13.

Rahul Gandhi, after retaining the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the April 26 General Elections, decided to vacate the seat in favour of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in his former constituency on Wednesday morning to join his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, in a massive roadshow. They were taken to her first election rally just before she filed three sets of nominations for the bye-election at Wayanad.

Incidentally, their mother, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, was also present when her two children addressed the election rally.

After Priyanka Gandhi delivered her speech, Rahul Gandhi said, “I think all of you understand very well the relation I have with Wayanad. I felt that what Wayanad did for me could not be expressed in words.

“Wayanad is the only constituency in the country which will have two Lok Sabha members, one is official the other is unofficial. They will both work together for the people of Wayanad.”

Rahul Gandhi said about his sister, “When we were small, I used to watch Priyanka with her friends. She always helped them a lot. I used to tell her, ‘You cannot go so far to look after your friends.’

“If she had a friend, she was willing to do anything for them, but sometimes her friends did not appreciate what she did. I used to tell her about it. She used to say ‘it doesn’t matter if they do not appreciate’, and she did what she felt was right. So if such a person can do so much for friends, you should know what she will do for her family. When my father died, it was she who looked after our mother. She was 17 years old at that time,” added Rahul Gandhi.

“I am confident my sister is ready to sacrifice for her family. I also need a favour for me, and I request you to look after my sister. She will put her energy into the people of Wayanad and your problems,” added Rahul Gandhi, which was followed by thunderous applause.

After she had filed three sets of nominations, the duo then visited the public cemetery where the remains of several unidentified people killed in the landslides on July 30 were interred.

Death Toll In Bengaluru Building Collapse Rises To Six; Two Arrested

Death toll in Bengaluru building collapse rises to six; two arrested

The death toll in the Bengaluru building collapse rose to six on Wednesday, police said.

Two people have been arrested in this connection and charged with culpable homicide, the police said.

The arrested were identified as Bhuvan Reddy, the owner of the building and contractor Muniyappa.

Bhuvan’s father, Muniraju Reddy, used to oversee the construction work of the building.

Muniraju, who is the first accused in the case, was absconding.

Thirteen people were rescued from the debris of the under-construction building that collapsed in Babusapalya near Hennur in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening.

Rescue operations were on as many more were feared trapped under the debris. The identity of the latest victim is yet to be ascertained.

The police have booked the accused under Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 125 (A) (Act of endangering life or personal safety), 125 (B) (causing grievous hurt to another person), 270 (public nuisance), 3 (5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act.

Talking to media persons, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said, “The ongoing rain in Bengaluru did not cause the building collapse in Babusapalya. This incident occurred due to unscientific and substandard construction work. A case will be registered against everyone responsible for this incident, including the owner, the construction contractor, and officials. The reason for the collapse is the construction of a tall building on a small plot,” he said.

The deceased were identified as 26-year-old Armaan, 35-year-old Tripal, and 19-year-old Mohammad Sahil, all migrant workers from Bihar, 25-year-old Satya Raju and Shankar.

The injured were 45-year-old Jagadevi, 28-year-old Rasheed, 25-year-old Nagaraju, 28-year-old Ramesh Kumar, Ayaz, and Harman.

The injured have been admitted to Bengaluru North and Hosmat hospitals, of whom condition of one was critical.

The construction of the six-storeyed building had been underway for six months.

According to the police, iron rods were not installed in the basement, and a large quantity of rainwater had accumulated in the pit dug for the compound’s construction, which led to the tragedy.

Shivakumar said: “The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressured into service. The Fire Force and Emergency Services DG are on the spot with the team for the rescue operation.”

The construction labourers trapped inside the building hailed from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.

LiveLaw Caught Spreading Misinformation: Falsely Reports Sharjeel Imam’s SC Hearing As Bail Plea, Misrepresents Judges, Case Details

LiveLaw Caught Spreading Misinformation On Sharjeel Imam's SC Hearing

On 22 October 2024, LiveLaw, a legal news portal founded by MA Rashid, an advocate practicing at Kerala High Court, posted about the repeated delays in the bail hearing of Sharjeel Imam, a figure described as astudent activist. The post stated, Student activist #SharjeelImam‘s petition assailing delay in hearing of his bail plea in the Delhi Riots Larger Conspiracy case not taken up today by the #SupremeCourt. Next hearing likely on Friday, i.e., 25th October.”

In a preceding post, LiveLaw noted, #SupremeCourt to hear student activist #SharjeelImam‘s petition assailing Delhi HC’s delay in deciding his bail plea in the 2020 #DelhiRiots larger conspiracy case. Bench: Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma. Imam has been in custody for over 4 years.”

The posts by LiveLaw seemed to make several key assertions: they stated that the hearing was to be conducted in the Supreme Court, that it focused on the delay in the High Court concerning Sharjeel Imam’s bail petition, and that it was related to the Delhi Riots larger conspiracy case (FIR 59/20). Additionally, they claimed that the Supreme Court bench responsible for postponing the hearing included Justices Bela Trivedi and SC Sharma.

The assertions made in these posts were damningly inaccurate. While there was indeed a Supreme Court hearing involving Sharjeel Imam, it was not a bail hearing, nor was it related to a delay in the High Court. Additionally, the hearing did not pertain to the Delhi Riots larger conspiracy case, nor was it presided over by Justices Bela Trivedi and SC Sharma.

To verify the details, OpIndia consulted the Supreme Court listings concerning the case involving Sharjeel Imam. The case, titled Sharjeel Imam vs. Government of NCT and others, has been assigned diary number 4730-2020. Upon searching this diary number, it was confirmed that it was indeed associated with Sharjeel Imam.

The Supreme Court’s website confirms that this specific case was scheduled for hearing on 22 October 2024, coinciding with the date of LiveLaw’s post. Notably, the case was listed before a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar, raising questions about how LiveLaw “erroneously” identified Justice Bela Trivedi.

Furthermore, a review of court orders associated with the case revealed that it had no relation to Imam’s bail application. In an order from an August hearing, the bench instructed the respondent states to clarify their positions regarding the transfer of chargesheets to the Delhi court for the pending trial. This order highlighted that the Supreme Court case was concerned with the clubbing of FIRs, not bail proceedings.

The case stems from a 2020 petition by Sharjeel Imam following his arrest for seditious speeches. FIRs had been filed against him in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. Imam’s 2020 petition sought to consolidate these FIRs, allowing for his sedition cases to be heard exclusively in Delhi. If the court accepted this consolidation, Imam would potentially receive default bail for the FIRs filed in other states.

Historical context reveals that Imam was arrested on 28 January 2020, for inciting secessionist sentiments during his speeches against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). His remarks, made at venues such as Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University, led to widespread protests and riots.

Sharjeel Imam faces charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between groups), and 505 (making statements conducive to public mischief), as well as under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Delhi police’s chargesheet accuses him of inciting hatred and instigating riots against the central government.

As of the time of this report, LiveLaw had not issued a correction or retraction regarding their inaccurate posts, which remain published on their social media platform X. The misrepresentation of the details surrounding Sharjeel Imam’s case has raised questions about the accuracy and responsibility of legal news reporting.

Centre Slams X for ‘Abetting Crime’ After 100 Flight Bomb Threats

Mumbai-New York Air India Flight Diverted To Delhi After Bomb Threat show-cause notice violation kathmandu stranded

The IT Ministry on Wednesday slammed Elon Musk-run social media platform X after more than 100 bomb threats were received by airlines over the past few days. Many of these hoaxes were circulated via social media platforms.

In a virtual meeting with representatives of airlines and social media platforms such as X and Meta, the IT Ministry officials said the situation amounts to “X abetting crime” and questioned its representatives on the steps taken to stop such alarming rumours from spreading.

According to reports, Joint Secretary, IT, Sanket S Bhondve chaired the virtual meeting.

The online threats created panic among the passengers and set off alarm bells for security agencies. Several flights, including internationals, were diverted after the hoax calls. Over the past few days, more than 120 flights operated by Indian carriers have received bomb threats. On Tuesday, 30 flights operated by IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India received such threats.

Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Monday that those circulating such hoax threats will face tough action, including being put on a no-fly list. The government plans to amend the ‘Suppression of Unlawful Acts’ against the ‘Safety of Civil Aviation Act’ to initiate action for offences when an aircraft is on the ground.

Currently, the aviation security norms primarily cover in-flight offences.

“We are trying to make amendments, and the legal team has worked on them. We need consultations with other ministries also. We are definitely pushing forward to have changes in the Act to address offences that happen when the flight is on the ground and make it a cognisable offence,” the minister said.

After the hoax calls, the airlines followed standard operating procedures towards the safety of the passengers. Last week, an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was diverted mid-air to Delhi following a bomb threat.
