‘To insult Karunanidhi, you just have to say Stalin’: Kamal trolls DMK chief

In an apparent dig at DMK chief MK Stalin, Kamal Haasan said that if one has to insult Karunanidhi, one would just have to utter ‘M.K. Stalin’.

The actor-politician was referring to the comment he had earlier made on the late patriarch Karunanidhi which had irked DMK supporters. Kamal Haasan, while addressing his party Makkal Needhi Maiam’s fourth-year inaugural ceremony in Chennai on February 21 had made a reference to wheelchair. This did not go well with the supporters of Karunanidhi.

“They misunderstood that I had insulted Karunanidhi when I spoke on wheel chair. But truly, if one were to insult Karunanidhi one has to just say ‘M.K. Stalin’.”, Kamal Haasan told speaking at a meeting yesterday (March 8).

In another veiled attack on the DMK’s campaign song – “Stalindhaan vaaraaru” (Stalin is only coming to power), Kamal said that these days dacoits came with prior announcement.

Kamal Haasan also took a dig at the DMK’s vision document that was unveiled on Sunday (March 7) at Tiruchirapalli and accused the DMK of plagiarising his party’s manifesto.

Speaking of his political view and career he said, “I once took part in protests against Hindi imposition, but didn’t know that I myself would later act in Hindi films. Back In the day, it seemed right to protest against it, as the politics of the was such. But today instead of fighting against Hindi, I would say long-live Tamil. Let Tamil also flourish!”, said the MNM chief.

Around 300 cows and bulls left stranded after authorities demolish cow shelter in Karnataka

The district administration and the police on Thursday, 4 March, demolished a goshala (cow shelter) in Mangaluru, leaving around 300 heads of cattle stranded without shelter. The Kapila Park Goshala had been operating for more than eight years in Kenjar on the outskirts of the city and housed cattle of the indigenous Kapila breed.

The Kapila Park Goshala had been operating for the past eight years on 19 cents of land in Kenjar, which is part of the 158 acres of land of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board which has been earmarked for the proposed Coast Guard Academy.

Prakash Shetty of Sumedha Trust, which runs the cow shelter, accused the district administration of demolishing the goshala without any warning. “There are 300 cattle in my goshala. Where should I find an alternative land for the cattle? The least government could have done is to provide an alternate land for the goshala,” he said.

He said that when bulldozers arrived at the cow shelter for the demolition, only bulls were present, while the cows had gone out for grazing. “It is shocking that a political party, that came to power on the promise of protecting cows, has now destroyed a goshala”, he rued.

“This cruel act of the administration and representatives is a betrayal to Hindutva and humanity. They are worse than Mughal rulers,” he added.

Accusing the State government of acting against the welfare of cattle, Mr. Shetty said he was yet to recover from the shock of Thursday’s incident. “I am thinking of building a shelter on our land, which adjoins the land on which the goshala was located. I don’t have money to rebuild the shelter,” said Mr. Shetty, who is a businessman.

Denying allegations that he had built the goshala illegally, Mr. Shetty said there were records showing that he had legally purchased the land from the earlier owner. He also claimed that he managed the goshala using his own funds and had not taken any funds from the government. He sold a few head of cattle recently as he had to bear the expenses of taking care of the native breed of cattle, he added.

In a recent meeting, BJP MLA directed district  authorities to clear the cow shelter within the week

During a recent District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting, BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had directed the district administration to clear the cow shelter within the week. MLA for Moodbidri Umanath Kotian had accused the goshala owner of indulging in sale of cattle.

On Thursday, personnel from the district administration came along with the local police and razed the shelter. There were comments on social media subsequently condemning Mr. Kateel and Mr. Kotian.

Deputy Commissioner K.V. Rajendra said the district administration was ready to rehabilitate the cattle if a request was made by the goshala owner. “We are yet to receive a request from Mr. Shetty,” he said, adding that there was no question of paying any compensation as the goshala was operating illegally on government land. The administration arranged for fodder and water for the cattle on Thursday, he said.

Two months ago, a notice was issued to Prakash Shetty to vacate on the grounds that it was illegal. Mr. Shetty had reached out to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maneka Gandhi and the BJP governments at the Centre and State to fulfill their commitment for cattle protection. However, no compromise had been reached. According to reports, he had even reached out to the PMO, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, urging them to intervene and protect the cow shelter.

BJP leaders had done “go pooja” in the same cow shelter, says Congress leader

Former Mangaluru Mayor and Congress leader Kavitha Sanil accused the BJP state government of being hypocritical on the issue of cow-protection. On the pretext of clearing a ‘goshala’ encroachment in Kenjaru, the BJP has rendered homeless several cows and calves, she alleged.

Speaking to the media at the Congress office on March 6, she said that BJP MLAs and MPs resort to politics in the name of cow during election time, but are now silent when cattle are rendered homeless.

“There is no objection to the setting up of a Coast Guard Academy. If government land has been encroached, then action could have been taken against those concerned.  The building could have been vacated by making alternate arrangements for the cattle, but in this case the poor animals have been left on the streets. What else can such people be called but fake cattle lovers?,” she said.

Showing old photos of BJP leaders offering “Go Pooja” in the place, she questioned why none of them have now visited when the cows are roaming on the streets.

Congress leader and MLA UT Khader said that authorities have rendered the poor animals homeless by not making alternate arrangements before clearing the encroachment.

Prakash Shetty and other activists, under the banner of Vande Mataram Go Samrakshana Samiti, plan to carry out a protest on March 11 demanding the restoration of the goshala. The protest will be staged near the mini-Vidhana Soudha.

As TN election campaign heats up, Amit Shah launchs ‘Vetri Kodi Eandi Tamizhagam Velvom’

amit shah tamil nadu

In a show of strength and solidarity, Union Home Minister Amit Shah kick-started the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election campaign in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu on 7 March. A Lok Sabha by-poll is also scheduled to be held in Kanyakumari alongside the state assembly elections, which are scheduled on 6 April.

This being his second visit to the state in a week, Shah’s presence is seen as a massive boost for the morale of the state cadre. However, there is serious discontent within the rank and file of the Congress party due to the indifference of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had come to Kanyakumari only to canvass votes for his party candidate even before the seat-sharing deal between DMK and Congress was clinched.

In 2019, Congress’s Vasanth Kumar won the seat defeating the incumbent former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan and now the BJP has again fielded him.

Amit Shah first offered prayers at the famous Thanumalayan temple in Suchintharam and then hit the road running, meeting with residents of the town. After that, he launched the door-to-door campaign “Vetri Kodi Eandi Tamizhagam Velvom”( carrying the flag of victory, we will win Tamil Nadu)”.

Amit Shah said “Today, we have started our campaign by visiting 11 homes here to take the BJP’s Lotus Symbol door-to-door. I appeal to the voters to elect Radhakrishnan and send him to Delhi to strengthen the voice of Tamil Nadu. I am convinced about the poll outcome looking at the excitement of the people. Our government will topmost priority to the development of the state. I am confident that the AIADMK-BJP-PMK coalition will form the next government in Tamil Nadu.”

Amit Shah tweeted, “Launched @BJP4TamilNadu’s door-to-door campaign from Suchindram, Kanyakumari. Under @narendramodi ji’s leadership, the development of Tamil Nadu is our topmost priority. I appeal to people of the state to elect the BJP-AIADMK alliance with an absolute majority.”

Later in the day, Amit Shah flew to Kerala to attend the valedictory function of BJP’s Kerala Vijay Sankalp yatra in Thiruvananthapuram.

UP govt demolishes property belonging to gangster Mukhtar Ansari in Lucknow

mukhtar ansari UP

In a blow to dreaded gangster Mukhtar Ansari, civil authorities in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh pulled down one illegal construction belonging to the gangster-turned-politician on Saturday. As per authorities, the top floor of the Rani Sultanat Plaza in Hazratganj in Lucknow was constructed illegally.

Related to former Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari was the prime accused in the murder of BJP leader Krishnanand Rai.

Ansari is right now safely ensconced in a jail in Punjab, enjoying the patronage of the Punjab state government. He faces multiple charges of murder, kidnapping, dacoity and arson.

Ansari’s base of operation was Ghazipur in western Uttar Pradesh. Multiple attempts by the Yogi government to have him brought to Uttar Pradesh have failed, as the Congress government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, has halted Ansari’s transfer to a jail in Uttar Pradesh. Ansari has even alleged that if he were to be transferred to Uttar Pradesh, he would be killed in a ‘state-sponsored encounter”.

As the Uttar Pradesh administration tightens its hold on other associates of Ansari, two sharp-shooters who worked for the Ansari gang were killed recently in a police encounter in Lucknow.

For years, the Ansari family enjoyed the political patronage of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, allowing Mukhtar Ansari and his associates to act without fear and impunity.

Swiss referendum gets majority to ban full facial coverings including niqab and burqa

In a referendum held on Sunday (local time), Switzerland voted in favour of banning full facial coverings, including the niqab and burqa, in almost all public places, reports Livemint. As many as 51.21 per cent of the voters voted in support of the proposal banning the burqa and the niqab.

Although the Swiss media referred to the referendum’s proposal as the “burqa ban”, the proposal does not mention Islam specifically.

Facial coverings will now be banned in all publicly accessible places, including on the streets, in public offices, on public transport, in restaurants, shops and in the countryside.

However, Muslim women would be able to cover their faces at places of worship, in situations where it is necessary for health and safety reasons, and in situations where it is “local custom” such as carnivals. It should be noted though that there will be no additional exceptions, for instance, to tourists.

The proposed ban received opposition from Swiss religious organizations, human rights and civic groups and the federal government. The Swiss Federal Council, which serves as the country’s federal government, and the Swiss Parliament had actually advised people to vote against it.

In 2011, France banned burqas and niqabs in public places, becoming the first country in Europe to outlaw facial coverings in public places. The European Court of Human Rights upheld the ban in 2014.

In Switzerland, the referendum comes after years of debates on the issue. Twelve years ago, another referendum had outlawed the construction of minarets in Switzerland.

Inscriptions referring Javadu Hills as ‘Navira Malai’ found again

‘Naviramalai Inscriptions’ have been found at Javvadu Hills next to Tirupattur. The study team comprising Dr. K. Mohan Gandhi, Professor of Tamil department in Tirupati Sacred Heart College, Archaeologist P. Venkatesan, Retired IPS Officer Kuppusamy, Historians Vendan and Veerappan have been conducting field research in the region for the past 12 years . On that basis, during a recent field study in Puthur Nadu near Javadumalai, they found the ‘Naviramalai Inscription’.

Prof. Mohan Gandhi says that Javadu Hills has a long connection with Sangam literature. Back then, it is said to have been known as ‘Navira Malai’. There is a reference to Navira Malai in the book Malaipadukatakam, a part of the Patthupaatu. Nannan Sei Nannan, the leader of Malaipadukadam, is said to have ruled Navira Malai under his rule.

Muzhalai Nathar Sivan Temple is located in Mozhalai village in Puthurnadu panchayat, which is near Javadu Malai. 2 inscription have been found in the agricultural land on the right side of it . It is believed that these carvings were donated to the temple.

Earlier, inscriptions carved during the Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties were found in the temple which is said to belong to the 16th century Vijayanagara Empire and mentions about Veera Kambannar who reclaimed Madurai. It is known from this inscription that Kambanna was referred to as Mahamandaleswaran and Kambanna Udayar. It also notes that ‘Navira Malai’ belonged to ‘Adaiyur’.

The latest inscriptions found states that those who misuse the property of the Lord will fall into the sin of killing the cow.  It also mentions about the donations given to the temple along with the representation of Sun, Moon, Trishul  and lamps, etc.

The name ‘Navira Malai’ existed from the Sangam to Chola and Vijayanagara period. The name was changed to Javvadumalai due to the high availability of spices during the British rule. The research team headed by Dr. Mohan Gandhi has been requesting the government to change the name to Navira Malai.
