Madras HC makes scathing remarks on actor Vijay in Rolls Royce tax evasion case, imposes fine of ₹1 lakh

The Madras High Court on Tuesday (July 13) imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on Tamil actor C. Joseph Vijay for failing to pay tax for an imported car he purchased in 2012.

Actor Vijay had failed to pay entry tax for the Rolls Royce Ghost car he imported from England which has been lying idle as a registration certificate is needed to ply on roads.

In the order issued by Justice M. Subramanian, it was stated that actor Vijay did not even state his profession/occupation in the affidavit.

The court also made some stinging remarks on the actor and Kollywood celebrities in general for their hypocrisy and virtue signaling in movies while indulging in tax evasion themselves.

Dismissing the plea moved by Vijay, the judge said “The petitioner / Actor having large scale fan groups and those fans are seeing the Actors as real heroes. In the State of Tamil Nadu, Cine Heroes have risen (sic) as rulers of the State and therefore, the people are under the impression that they are the real heroes. Thus, they are not expected to behave like a reel heroes. Tax evasion is to be construed as anti-national habit, attitude and mindset and unconstitutional.”

“These Actors are portraying themselves as champion to bring the social justice in the society. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in the society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the Statutes”, the order further noted.

The Court has order the fine amount to be made to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

BJP to intensify protests in Kerala amidst surge in crime against women

As the number of sexual harassment of women and child rape cases have been on the rise in the Communist-ruled Kerala, the chief of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),  K Surendran alleged on Monday (July 12) that the Pinarayi Vijayan led government is taking no action to reduce crime against women in Kerala and that the BJP will raise this issue all over the state with rallies in the coming days.

This outrage comes in the wake of a six-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in the Idukki district and Surendran demanded a complaint be filed against the Left MLA, who allegedly said that the victim’s post-mortem is unnecessary and also alleged that the CPM MLA had tried to sabotage the case.

“Arjun is an active worker of the youth wing of CPI(M) in Kerala who brutally raped and murdered a six-year-old child in Vandiperiyar. The sitting MLA of the ruling front vehemently opposed the post – mortem of the victim. The Kerala Police should book the MLA under POCSO,” Surendran said.

“BJP will intensify protests in coming days against the crime against women and children in Kerala,” he said.

“If the perpetrators are to be punished, they must be prosecuted by those in the administration but instead they are protecting them. Kerala is one of the leading states in the country where the accused in cases of sexual harassment go unpunished. Defendants escape because they are the ruling party,” Surendran added.

V Muraleedharan, senior BJP leader and Minister of State for External Affairs in a tweet said, “The rise in no of crimes against women and Children in Kerala speak volumes of the misgovernance of the Pinarayi Vijayan regime. It’s shameful that women and children feel unsafe in God’s own country. CPI(M) led Kerala Govt has been protecting and sheltering perpetrators,”.

“We are a step closer to the final decision on Covaxin’s global acceptance, as the rolling data is slated to begin in July 2021,” it added.

The indigenous vaccine has 63.6 per cent efficacy against the Delta variant of Covid-19, which has now spread to many other countries and Covaxin demonstrated 93.4 per cent efficacy against severe symptomatic Covid-19 and 63.6 per cent against asymptomatic Covid-19.

Kongu Naadu should be made separate state for administrative convenience says Kongu Munnetra Kazhagam President Best Ramasamy

Following the report by Dinamalar in which it stated that the Central government is mulling over the option of creating a separate Kongu Nadu, debates and discussions on the topic has begun with the idea getting both supporters and naysayers.

In this light, Best Ramasamy, a prominent textile manufacturer and the President of Kongu Munnetra Kazhagam President, in a press meet said that Kongu region (comprising of 10-11 districts in Western Tamil Nadu) should be made a separate state for administrative convenience.

He also alleged that subsequent governments in Tamil Nadu have done nothing for the area except for collecting revenue from the region. He said that 66% of the tax revenue goes to the Government of Tamil Nadu from these 11 districts of Kongu region while the region remains neglected adding that creation of a separate state would lead to development of the region.

“We’ve been making the request since 1976. We want the Kongu region to prosper. The Kongu Nadu demand is not just for the Gounder community but for every one in the region. We are not asking for a separate country but for a separate state which the Indian Constitution allows.” he said pointing out that Dr. Ramadoss, the head of PMK had been placing the demand for a separate ‘Vada Thamizhagam’ (Northern Tamil Nadu).

He also said that the 10.5% internal quota for Vanniyars was wrong and that reservation should be given on economic grounds.

“We will strengthen the demand for Kongu Nadu by bringing all communities together. We have petitioned the Central government regarding the request and we are hoping to meet the Prime Minister soon”, he said.

AP police allegedly fails to book Pastor who raped a Dalit child under SC/ST Act, complaint filed with NCSC

A 46-year-old Church pastor Alavala Sudhakar was arrested last week over allegations of sexual assault on a minor girl in the Kakinada rural zone of East Godavari district.

As per reports, the pastor allegedly assaulted the minor girl on June 22 and as soon the victim’s mother came to know, she filed a police complaint in the Sarpavaram police station.

The pastor was attending a function on that day where he laid his eyes on the 10-year-old girl who he later convinced to go with him to a field away from the church and then proceeded to sexually assault the minor.

When the terrified 10-year-old girl started screaming for help, Pastor Sudhakar stuffed a fifty rupee note in her hand as a bribe asking her to not tell anyone about the incident.

The pastor was arrested and an FIR has been registered based on the complaint of the mother. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

However, it has been found that the police has intentionally not slapped the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act despite the victim being from the Dalit community.

It is also being alleged that though the police, while briefing the media gave out the full name of the accused as Kalavala Gangadhar alias Sudhakar, they did not mention any details like original name, father name, caste, age, occupation about him in their FIR except his name.

The SC ST Rights Forum, a non-profit legal activism organization working for Dalit rights have alleged that the concerned police official who is investigating this case is having mala fide intention to favour the accused.

The organization has now written to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to intervene in the matter.

#JusticeForKeralaGirls: Most literate state becomes unsafe for women

Kerala which is hailed as a ‘model state’ and the ‘most literate state’ is not just emerging as a hot bed of Islamic jihad but also becoming unsafe for women to live.

According to reports, crimes against women in the Communist ruled state has soared high. According the Kerala Police’s official website, 886 incidents of rape and 1437 incidents of molestations have been registered till May for this year.

Recently, a worker of the Communist party repeatedly sexually abused a six year old girl for three years before raping and killing her last week. The body of the minor girl was found hanging in a room at her parents’ quarters.

Peerumade MLA Vazhoor Soman requested the cops to not conduct an autopsy of the girl’s body. The cops, however, went ahead and conducted the post-mortem. The report revealed that she was sexually abused and murdered.

The latest rape has sent shock waves across the state despite the media maintaining stoic silence over the matter.

In light of this, social media saw the hashtag #JusticeForKeralaGirls trend nationwide with opposition political parties especially the BJP blaming the ruling Communist government of Pinarayi Vijayan for the pathetic state of affairs.

China’s BRI poses economic risks for nations, G7’s B3W should spell out plans

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) poses immense economic risks for nations globally, while G7’s Build Back Better World (B3W) needs more clarity to take on the challenge against Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP’s) hegemonic plans, two key strategic affairs experts have said.

India is the only nation, due to its proximity to China, with a clear vision on how BRI is a dangerous proposition, and New Delhi has to evolve its own plans for counter the BRI project or to take a lead role in implementing G7’s B3W initiative, Cleo Paskal and Seshadri Chari have suggested.

The two strategic affairs experts were discussing “G7’s B3W versus CCP’s BRI: Development Funding or Debt Diplomacy” at a webinar hosted by Law and Society Alliance, a Delhi-headquartered think-tank, and DefenceCapital, a strategic affairs publication.

Montreal-based Cleo Paskal is an Associate Fellow with London-headquartered Chatham House and a Senior Fellow for the Indo-Pacific in the Center on Military and Political Power at the Washington DC-headquartered Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Manipal-based Seshadri Chari is the Secretary General of Mumbai-headquartered Forum for Integrated National Security, and a former Member of the Governing Council of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) and Director (International Affairs) at the Institute for National Security Studies.

The G7 nations, who met last month, had announced the B3W Initiative for development funding in democracies as a counter to BRI, a global infrastructure strategy of the CCP.

“There are potential risks in terms of local economy and corruption under the BRI to nations that are part of the Chinese initiative. BRI does not care about labour or environment or transparency standards. BRI does not value law or society that Law and Society Alliance, the event’s host, care for,” Paskal said at the event.

Citing the example of Solomon Islands, Paskal said its premier Daniel Suidani had opposed the CCP’s plans for the Pacific Ocean Island nation, refusing bribe offers from China. “In May 2021, Suidani was diagnosed with a tumor that required a costly surgery. He had no money for his treatment and China used its influence to deny him treatment in other nations in the Pacific Ocean region. Ultimately, his treatment was arranged in Taiwan with help from Indian academician Prof. M. D. Nalapat,” she said.

CCP, Paskal said, infects the economic, political and judicial structures of nations that join the BRI and subsequently takes over the capital investments and economic independence of the nations that have joined BRI.

On the other hand, G7’s B3W initiative, she said, includes geopolitical content, but the business lobbyists involved in the initiative would perforce recast it to geo-economics.

Seshadri Chari, in his remarks, said BRI and B3W were incomparable, but the strategic affairs community have unwittingly started comparing the two.

He explained it by noting that G7 nations cumulatively are a $34-trillion GDP economy with an average per capita GDP of $43000, whereas China is a $15-trillion GDP economy with an average per capita GDP of $11000. G7 nations have a population of 775 million, and China has a population of 1.45 billion, he said.

Seshadri Chari also pointed out that in 1946, Mao Zedong had observed that a time will come when both the United States and the then USSR would lose their dominant status as a global power and that there would be an Intermediate Zone when Communist China would rise to become a global power.

He said G7 nations would be spending up to $40 trillion under the B3W Initiative to operate in democratic nations only in the regions from Carribeans to Indo-Pacific, yet it has to start fresh. China, on the other hand, has already committed to $4.2 trillion covering 1,600 projects, be it in a Capitalist or a Socialist or a Communist nation across the globe in nearly 160 countries.

“The funds for B3W would be sourced from private enterprises, as there are massive profits in infrastructure projects. On the other hand, funds for BRI are sourced from China’s own sources, Asian Development Bank, World Bank and International agencies.”

On China’s objectives, Seshadri Chari noted that BRI is not an economic, global, development, multilateral project, but a unilateral project proposed and signed by China. “The strategic outlook of BRI is to take over as many projects as possible, so that China becomes the leader of the new world order. The objectives of G7 nations for its B3W initiative are not yet spelled out.”

While B3W would focus on working with democratic nations with several conditions including against child labor, transparency, democracy, and adhering to the rules of the United Nations, BRI does not have such condition. “China takes its BRI to all nations, be it a dictatorship or military rule or socialist or capitalist.”

The two experts shared the view that India was the only nation to know about the dangers posed by China to global peace and world order. “India should step up and take over the development projects.” Among the suggestions were for India to strengthen the BIMSTEC and ASEAN institutions, and lead the Indo-Pacific Development Initiative.

Police in West Bengal arrest three members of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh

Police in West Bengal have arrested three suspected terrorists of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Kolkata’s Haridevpur area from a rented flat in the western suburbs of the city on Sunday (July) 11) evening.

The three jihadists have been identified as Mikhail Khan, Rabiul Islam and Naziur Rahman, all hailing from Gopalgunj, which also happens to be the home district of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police said the three were staying in Kolkata under the pretext of medical treatment of a relative. “But they were actually raising funds and trying to recruit local Muslims for jihadi actions,” said an officer of Kolkata Police special task force.

Bangladesh intelligence has confirmed the identity and affiliations of the three arrested.

Bangladesh has its own share of Islamist terrorists escaping into India, especially finding sanctuary in West Bengal only to return to the country to launch attacks.

In the last few years, Indian and Bangladesh have developed close intelligence cooperation as PM Hasina is determined not to allow its soil used for terror strikes against India.
