How the lotus bloomed in the Dravidian parties stronghold of Modakurichi

Modakurichi Assembly constituency is a part of the Erode Parliamentary Constituency and covers regions of Sivagiri, Modakurichi and some parts of Erode City. It is a big constituency in terms of area and has a high rural population. The constituency came under national limelight during the 1996 Assembly elections when a record 1033 candidates contested from the constituency. It is from then on that Election Commission increased the security deposit amount for contesting candidates to ₹10000.

The constituency has traditionally been a stronghold of the Dravidian parties with AIADMK winning 7 of the 12 elections held in the last 50 years. The DMK had won from this constituency in 1971, 1989, and 1996.

The 2021 Assembly Elections saw Dr. C. Saraswathi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning from the constituency. This is the first time that the BJP has won from here. Prior to this, only once has a national party, Congress, won from here in the year 2006.

Saraswathi was born on March 1, 1945 in Anandampalayam village that falls in the same constituency. She is a doctor by profession and had graduated out of Stanley Medical College, Chennai. She is a well-known paediatrician and has been practicing in Erode for more than five decades. She has been a member of the BJP for a long time and has served as the state executive committee member. She is also an educationist and had established the Indian Public School in 2004, the first Montessori and CBSE School in Erode.

Her candidature for the 2021 Assembly elections came as a surprise as other prominent names were being touted for the constituency. This is the first time that the 76 year old is contesting elections. Defying old age and the scorching sun, Dr. C. Saraswathi managed to emerge victorious with a slender margin of 281 votes.

It is to be noted that the Dr. Saraswathi has no prior electioneering experience and belongs to a party that is organizationally yet to grow in the region. But she managed to mobilize a team of young volunteers from scratch to work for her and help her fight the elections. Along with the help of the BJP leadership in the state, Dr. Saraswathi kicked off her campaign on a subtle note.

Speaking to The Commune, Prof. P. Kanagasabapathi, the Vice President of BJP Tamil Nadu and the election in-charge for the constituency said that the challenge was to take the ‘lotus’ symbol in the predominantly rural constituency where majority of the people do not have awareness about the symbol.

“We developed innovative ways of campaigning to take the ‘lotus’ symbol to the people. Through ‘therukoothu‘, we created an awareness about the ‘lotus’ symbol. Our main focus for the campaign was to convey the schemes that have benefitted Tamil Nadu people like the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, Mudra loan scheme, Ujjwala LPG cylinder scheme, etc.” said Prof. Kanagasabapathi.

“Since a large number of people in the constituency are engaged in agriculture and allied activities, we did a focused campaign for farmers. We highlighted the schemes brought out by the Modi government at the Centre especially the PM-KISAN scheme and how the recently enacted farmer empowerment laws would benefit farmer in a huge way.” said youth volunteer who had helped in Dr. Saraswathi’s campaign.

Being a woman candidate, the team also did a campaign focusing on women by highlighting her humble origins as well as women related schemes brought out by the Central and State Governments. A bike rally comprising of women was held for canvassing votes.

“We did not have any high decibel shrill campaign. We just focused on the good work done by the candidate along with highlighting the schemes of Modi government at the Centre and the AIADMK government at the State” he said.

Apart from the larger narrative, Dr. Saraswathi has a name for herself in the region because of her yeoman service through her profession as a doctor. “She has been holding health camps for the poor and underprivileged and giving them free treatment. Her work definitely has an influence among the people.” Prof. Kanagasabapathi added.

With a strong alliance partner AIADMK on its side, the BJP was able to activate cadres for door-to-door campaigning as well.

However, it was not an easy fight for Dr. Saraswathi as she faced a strong opposing candidate belonging to the DMK who was also a woman nearly of the same age. Subbulakshmi Jegadeesan of the DMK was previously elected as the MLA for the constituency in 1996. She had earlier been a Member of Parliament representing Tiruchengode and also served as a Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment from 2004-2009. Prior to that she was Minister in in the Tamil Nadu Government holding various portfolios.

But with a focused campaign, Dr. Saraswathi managed to pull off a victory with a razor thin margin. Though the margin is just over 200 votes, she has been earning appreciations for securing BJP’s victory from a predominantly rural area.

Philippines tells China to ‘GET THE F**K OUT’ of its Exclusive Economic Zone

China Philippines

The Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Teodoro Locsin Jr, did not mince words when he recently told China to get out of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines.

In a tweet that has now gone viral, Locsin said, “China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me see… O…GET THE FUCK OUT.”

This comment was made on Monday (3 May) after Manila’s protest over the illegal presence of hundreds of Chinese boats inside the Philippines’ EEZ.

“What are you doing to our friendship? You. Not us. We’re trying. You. You’re like an ugly oaf forcing your attentions on a handsome guy who wants to be a friend; not to father a Chinese province”, Locsin said.

China, which is the most powerful country in South East Asia, has a territorial dispute with every neighbour over land and sea. According to China, the resource-rich South China Sea belongs to it as per historical data. Beijing also did not obey an international tribunal decision in 2016 which ruled that China’s claims over the South China Sea were not valid.

Defence Secretary of Philippines Delfin Lorenzana said, “While we acknowledge that China’s military capability is more advanced than ours, this does not prevent us from defending our national interests and our dignity as a people with all that we have.”

Kannada actor Arjun Gowda becomes hero in real life, drives ambulance clad in PPE for COVID victims

Some people are heroes in movies, but it takes grit and a kind heart to be a hero in real life. Kannada actor Arjun Gowda has proven that he’s in the second category since the 27-year-old has donned the role of an ambulance driver for COVID patients. Clad from head-to-toe in PPE, he is driving COVID victims to and from the hospital. He is also taking those who didn’t make it through to perform last rites.

“This disturbed me a lot,” said Gowda to The New Indian Express. He had then approached Project Smile Trust and volunteered to be a driver. He went on to joke that he didn’t know how to drive an ambulance but that he sure was glad that he picked it up fast.

“A government employee sent his family to their hometown hoping that they would not be at risk. But the man had a wheezing problem and died in his sleep. His neighbours called us as none of his relatives came forward. We took the body to a cremation centre and did the last rites as well. We then made sure the ashes reached the family,” Gowda said.

Arjun Gowda has acted in films such as Odeya, Rustum, and Yuvarathnaa. He is awaiting the release of ‘WoW’, in which he plays the lead role, as well as an untitled Tamil film with Vijay Sethupathi.

ISRO spy case: CBI lodges FIR against erring Kerala cops

ISRO spy case Nambi Narayanan

Based on the Supreme Court’s directions, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR against Kerala police personnel for allegedly framing ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan in the 1994 ISRO spy case, officials said on Monday.

The apex court, on April 15, ordered that the report of a high-level committee on the role of the erring police officials in the 1994 espionage case relating to ISRO scientist Narayanan be given to the CBI.

It had earlier directed the agency to conduct further investigation on the issue.

In October 1994, the Kerala police had registered two cases after Maldivian national Rasheeda was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram for allegedly obtaining secret drawings of ISRO rocket engines to sell to Pakistan.

Narayanan, the then director of the cryogenic project at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was arrested, along with the then ISRO deputy director D Sasikumaran and Fousiya Hasan, another Maldivian national and a friend of Rasheeda.

The CBI probe had found the allegations against Narayanan and Sasikumaran to be false.

D Chandrasekhar, the Russian Space Agency Glavkosmos’ India representative, was arrested in the false spy case along with Narayanan and Sasikumaran. He passed away just hours before the Supreme Court announced the ₹50 lakh compensation to Narayanan in 2018. The last two decades of his life, Chandrasekhar had been living in Vidyaranyapura in north Bengaluru as a recluse after the torture he underwent under trial by the Kerala Police and the IB.

Last month, Hasan, who now resides in Sri Lanka, said in an interview with a Sri Lankan TV channel she was forced to falsely implicate the two ISRO scientists.

Terming the police action against the former ISRO scientist “psycho-pathological treatment”, India’s apex court had, in September 2018, said his “liberty and dignity”, basic to his human rights, were jeopardised as he was taken into custody and, eventually, despite all the glory of the past, he was compelled to face “cynical abhorrence”.

11:05 starts: DMK goons unleash violence hours after coming to power, breaks shop and hits workers

The DMK’s atrocities seems to have begun just within a day after coming into power with its party cadres breaking shops and attacking workers. Even before the DMK chief MK Stalin has taken oath as Chief Minister, DMK goons in Karur district ransacked a shop belonging to an AIADMK cadre causing extensive damage to the property along with a person getting injured seriously.

KNR Sivaraj is the Karur Zone Deputy Secretary of AIADMK IT Wing and runs an eatery business in the town. Just hours after the DMK’s victory was confirmed, cadres belonging to the DMK showed up at his house at around 10:30 PM. “I got a call from my wife at around 10:30 PM. She told me that some rowdies are standing and shouting at the doorstep asking about my whereabouts. I was with AIADMK cadres serving food to counting agents who had gone for duty. I asked my wife to lock all the doors and windows in the house and not open it till I come.” Sivaraj said speaking to The Commune.

Sivaraj said that they had left the place after shouting but arrived at his shop later at 12:30 PM. At that time, they had broken a TATA Ace vehicle and damaged the furnitures in the shop. Tubelights and the washbasin too were broken. They had also attacked the people who were at the shop. “They had come to the shop asking for me. At that time, one of my employees had tried to come outside. They hit him hard on his head with a wooden log. He had to get 4-5 stitches. Poor fellow he is just 21-22 years old and had come to work here from Pudukottai.”, Sivaraj said.

He said that two other people managed hide themselves from their sight and that another old man who works as a cleaner was left off considering his age.

The attack was carried out at the behest of one ‘Karur Deepak Suriyan‘, a DMK office bearer belonging to the IT Wing and close to Senthil Balaji, the winning DMK candidate from Karur.

“They had threatened to kill me by tomorrow. I am now being asked to go under hiding and save myself.”, Sivaraj said adding that he has sent off his 22 year old employee back to his native in Pudukottai.

This incident is now being shared widely in social media. Many critics of the DMK have pointed that the party has begun its atrocities even before DMK chief MK Stalin has taken oath as Chief Minister.

Woman from Paramakudi cuts off her tongue as offering to fulfill her oath following Stalin’s victory

In the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the DMK has won more seats than it needs for a majority. Following the party’s victory, DMK’s senior leader Stalin will take over as the Chief Minister on the 7th day of his victory.

In celebration of DMK’s victory, a lot of DMK cadre members are celebrating in several different ways. A specific supporter of the DMK from Paramakudi has chosen a unique and shocking way to display her celebratory spirit. 32 year old Vanitha from Pothuvakudi near Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district had prayed for the DMK to win the assembly elections and that MK Stalin should become the chief minister. She had promised that, in return, she would cut off her tongue and leave it at the temple as an offering to the Muthalamman temple hundi.

Accordingly, on Monday morning, following the announcement of Stalin’s victory, at the Paramakudi Muthalamman Temple, she cut her tongue in front of the temple gate with a knife and intended to put it in the piggy bank. But she had to leave the tongue on the doorstep as the temple was not open. Vanitha was found lying in a pool of blood. The woman was later rescued by the public and sent to Paramakudi Government Hospital for treatment.
