After Attending Mass Conversion Event, AAP MLA & Ex-Min Meets VCK MP Known For Making Anti-Hindu Remarks

Former AAP Minister Rajendra Pal Gautham who quit the Kejriwal cabinet after facing flak for participating in a mass religious conversion event, met with VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan who is know for making anti-Hindu remarks.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries with “Jai Bhim” slogan and the VCK MP showered praises for the AAP leader.

“The #AAP minister @AdvRajendraPal who led the recent conversion of 10,000 people to Buddhism in Delhi resigned after BJP protested. We met and appreciated him. Tomorrow we will participate in a rally from his residence to Ambedkar Memorial.”, Thirumavalavan had tweeted.

Thirumavalavan also participated in the rally organized by the AAP MLA from his residence.

Thirumavalavan is a serial abuser of Hindus and Hindu Gods. In an online seminar organized by Periyar TV he had said “All women are prostitutes as per Hindu Dharma.. Manu Dharma.”

In November 2019, he was booked for hurting religious sentiments when he made a comment on temples. He had said “if a structure built like a dome it is a Mosque, if there is a tall tower like structure it is a Church, if there are ugly figurines it is a Hindu temple”.

At a book release event held on 9th December 2017, the VCK leader called Thirugnanasambandhar, one of the 63 Nayanmars as a ‘murderer’.

On October 5, AAP MLA (Seemapuri, Delhi) Mr. Rajendra Pal Gautam who was then the Social Welfare Minister in the Delhi cabinet, attended an event where 10,000 Hindus were converted en masse to Buddhism.

Mr.Pal had shared the stage with a saffron-clad man, urging the crowd to disassociate themselves from all manners of Hindu beliefs and worship . He was heard taking B.R Ambedkar’s controversial “22 vows” oath and repeating many of these contentious statements earlier made by saffron-clan man. The anti-Hindu comments and conversion oath included “I renounce Hinduism which is harmful to humanity and impedes the advancement and development of humanity because it is based on inequality.”

Later in an interview to The Hindu he told that he formally embraced Buddhism in the event.

The BJP had condemned the communally divisive comments and alleged that Hindu sentiments were hurt. Rajendra Pal was the Social Welfare Minister in the AAP’s Delhi cabinet, till his recent resignation, in the aftermath of the controversial mass Hindu conversion event . On October 11, Delhi Police summoned the ex-minister for questioning and inquiry into the October 5 religious conversion event.

“If Democracy Matters, We’re The Majority”: Muslims In Michigan Protest Against Use Of LGBTQ Books In Schools

A school-board meeting in Dearborn, Michigan was shut down earlier this week by hundreds of protesters opposing the circulation of LGBTQ books across the city’s public-school system.

Viral videos of members of the Muslim community protesting against LGBTQ books in state-run public schools, have been circulating on Twitter.

Many of the protesters carried signs in English and Arabic: “Keep your dirty books in the closet,”, “If democracy matters, we’re the majority”, “Stop grooming our kids,” and “Homosexuality big sin.”

Dearborn is a city in the U.S state of Michigan. It is home to the largest Muslim population in the United States per capita. It is also home to the largest mosque in the United States. The town elected its first Arab-American Mayor in 2021 with the support of the community’s support.

One of the community’s prominent religious leaders, Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini urged followers to attend the school-board meeting during his Friday sermon. “Some of those books are completely inappropriate for our children to read,” Al-Qazwini said. “Some of those books promote pornography. Some of them promote homosexuality. We don’t need this.”

The Dearborn incident is reminiscent of similar British Muslim protests against same-sex education. Weeks of protests wracked Birmingham when local schools sought to teach “LBGT-inclusive content” to young students. At one point, LGBT campaigners and their children were pelted with eggs by protesters, and about half the school’s students were voluntarily withdrawn from classes by parents.

This incident has brought attention to the changing demographics of the US. Over the last two decades, some states in the continental US have been turning into non-white majority populations according to Census bureau reports – New Mexico, California, Texas, Nevada, and Maryland.

Immigrants of all races and religions continue to make efforts to live or work in the USA. This includes large numbers of Indian immigrants as well.

There wasn’t much noise about the published statistics on the changing demographics, in most circles and the general American reaction to the changing demographics was a muted one. Sections of Americans are now beginning to take notice of the rise in Muslim populations, in certain neighborhoods.

The latest Pew Readeach numbers from 2015 show the country is home to an estimated 3.3 million Muslims of all ages — about 1.1 percent of the total US population. But by 2050, Pew researchers estimate Islam will supplant Judaism as the second-most popular religion in the US with Muslims ultimately making up 2.1 percent of the future population. According to reports, Islam is the fastest growing religion, in the US. Currently, the state of Michigan of which Dearborn is a part of, stands at 6th place with 1218 Muslims per 100 K residents.

Many Americans are anxious about “liberal”, left-wing organizations like ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) consistently questioning America and Americans on alleged discrimination against Muslims.

With the Dearborn incident , many concerned Americans are asking left wing media, left-liberal political parties or sections of such parties like the Democratic Party, if they are in support of such protests.

Citizens have expressed concern that conservative Islam and Sharia Law go against the fundamental idea of what the U.S stands for and the type of freedom and values it espouses.

DMK Councillor Stabbed For Allegedly Not Featuring DMK MLA In Posters Welcoming DMK District Secretary

Feature Image Courtesy: Vikatan

The Paramakudi police have registered a case against 30 people, including Paramakudi DMK MLA’s son Duraimurugan, in a case of DMK councillor being stabbed.

Katharbatcha Muthuramalingam, DMK Ramanathapuram MLA, was recently re-elected as the DMK District Secretary.

Subsequently, when he arrived at Paramakudi, DMK Councilor Bhagyaraj of the fifth ward of the district had stuck posters and banners in the area to welcome him.

The banner, however, did not feature Paramakudy DMK MLA Murugesan for which his relative Vicky aka Vignesh verbally abused DMK Councillor Bhagyaraj, an audio of which was released to the media.

In the alleged phone conversation between the two, when DMK councillor told DMK MLA Murugesan that his son Vignesh was harassing him over the phone, he responded saying “My son would have questioned about the banner as it did not carry MLA’s photo.” to which the DMK councilor asked in response,”I’m putting up a banner with my own money. Why put your picture on it?”.

An enraged MLA responded, “Oh you have come to that level. Let me show my strength.”

In this scenario, DMK MLA Murugesan and DMK councillor Bhagyaraj both took part in a programme to give free bicycles to schools students in Paramakudi.

It is alleged that DMK MLA Murugesan and his followers argued with DMK councillor Bhagyaraj at the time for not including MLA’s picture on the banner.

After the program, DMK Councilor Bhagyaraj and DMK Paramakudi north District Secretary Jeevanandham, who were on their way home, was attacked by DMK MLA Murugesan’s supporters near Paramakudi five-point junction .

They also stabbed him in ribs before fleeing the scene.

Police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and interrogated the severely injured Bhakyaraj, who was then taken to the Paramakudi Government Hospital for treatment.

Bhagyaraj has complained that 25 people including DMK MLA Murugesan’s son Duraimurugan and his cousin Vicky assaulted them. Subsequently, Vicky has also given a complaint against Bhagyaraj, Jeevanandam and Madhusudhanan for threatening to kill him.

Paramakudi Nagar police are looking into the complaints made by both parties.

Congress Leader And 4 Others Arrested In Bengaluru Forced Religious Conversion Case

Feature Image Courtesy: The Lede

Anshar Paasha, a Congress Corporator in Bengaluru along with 4 others including his brother Nayaz Pasha have been arrested by the Bengaluru Police in the case where a Hindu youth was allegedly forcefully converted, assaulted and tortured for days.

The incident came to light after a video was published by The Lede on 9 October 2022, in which the victim (name withheld) narrates the ordeals faced by him inside the Banashankari Masjid and how he was forcefully circumcised, sodomized and left to bleed.

The victim mentions that he was given a black liquid which kept him unconscious for four days and during this time, he was allegedly forcefully circumcised. He said that he was continuously bleeding after circumcision, and was thrown into a dark room. He claims to have received a cut on the hand after refusing to eat meat. He was also sent to Tirupati to study Islam in three mosques where again he was assaulted for being unable to correctly perform Namaz and recite verses from the Quran.

The victim had mentioned the name of Congress corporator Anshar Paasha who he alleged to be involved in the conversion racket.

“Anshar Paasha, Nayaz Paasha, Ajeesh, Muhammed Iqbal, Althaf, Shabbir, Rafiq, Sayeed and others forcibly pushed me into the Banashankari masjid and assaulted me. Then they brought Dr. Khaleem, who circumcised me against my will despite my repeated requests for him not to.”, the victim had said in The Lede video.

“After being transported to Puthur, Andhra, I was subsequently brought back to Bengaluru and placed in the custody of Nayaz and Anshar Pasha in the Sultan Shah Masjid.”, he had said.

The victim also stated that he was punched in the testicles and a screwdriver inserted into his anus until he began to bleed. He was also asked to convert 3 Hindus every year and was given death threats if he complained to the police.

Initially he was hesitant to file a police complaint as he lived in a locality dominated by Muslims, he said. He later filed a complaint with the help of Bajrang Dal in which 12 people have been named as accused.

Based on this complaint, the police have arrested 5 persons including Conrgess corporator Anshar Paasha and his brother Nayaz Paasha.

They have been booked under sections 265, 344, 346, 504, 506 of the IPC along with provision under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Further investigations are ongoing.

Why The Renovation Of Mahakaleshwar Temple Is Significant

Following the Vishwanath temple corridor in Varanasi and the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand, the Mahakal temple in Ujjain is the third ‘jyotirlinga’ site to see a major renovation and expansion exercise. The proposed ₹850 Cr Mahakal corridor is four times the size of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, which the PM had inaugurated last year. The first phase of the Mahakal Lok corridor has been developed for ₹316 crore, with an aim to decongest the area and focus on conservation and restoration of heritage structures.

Here’s the history of the ancient Mahakal “Lingam”, the temple complex and some related information, from various sources.

Why Is Mahakaleshwar Special?

The Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh holds a special significance for Hindus. The Puranas say that Lord Shiva pierced the world as an endless pillar of light, called the jyotirlinga. There are 12 jyotirlinga sites in India, considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Of the 12 jyotirlinga sites in India, Mahakal is the only jyotirlinga facing the south, while all the others face east, hence the name of the main idol “Dakshinamukhi”. The Sanskrit word “Kala” refers to both Time and Death. Shiva, as one who conquered both (one, who is beyond time and death) was bestowed with the name, Mahakala. The direction of death is believed to be the South and people worship Mahakaleshwar to prevent an untimely death.

It is also note worthy because it is the only Jyothirlingam of the twelve, that is believed to be “Swayambhu” or self-manifested , self-existing. It is claimed to be a naturally-arisen lingam, a self manifested deity, as opposed to being made by human hands.

Another special aspect of the temple is that the Mahakaleshwar is the only jyotirling facing towards the south as all other jyotilings face towards east. It is also one of the shrines of the Vaippu Sthalams (temples mentioned in Tevaram) sung by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Appar.

The Puranas mention that the Mahakal “jyotirlinga” of the temple was built by the Creator of the Universe, Lord Brahma himself. It is believed that the ‘Jyotirlingam’ was found inside the Koti Teerth Kunda in the Mahakal campus and a temple was first constructed by King Vikramaditya whose capital was Ujjain.

The story of Lord Shiva’s presence in Ujjain in the form of the Mahakal, talks of an Ujjain king, Chandrasena, an ardent Shiva devotee. His enemies captured the city but Lord Shiva came to the aid of his Ujjain devotees in his Mahakala form and destroyed the enemies of King Chandrasena. Upon the request of his devotees, Shiva agreed to reside in the city, become its chief and protect His devotees. Shiva resides here in light form as Mahakala in a Lingam , that was formed on its own from the powers of Shiva and his consort, Parvati.

The larger temple complex for the Jyothirlinga was built in the 6th century ACE by Kumarasena, the son of a former king of Ujjain, Chandpradyot. It was re-constructed in the 12th century under King Udayaditya and King Naravarman and was a popular religious destination before its destruction by the Muslim armies of Sultan Iltutmish.

When Islamic Invaders Razed Down The Temple

The temple complex was destroyed by the Muslim Turkic slave king, Shams-ud-din Iltutmish during his raid of Ujjain in 1234-5 CE. The Jyotirlinga was dismantled and believed to be have been thrown into a nearby ‘Kotiteerth Kunda’, a pond neighboring the temple. The Jaladhari (a structure supporting the Lingam) was stolen during the invasion. The temple was damaged and many idols were defaced by Iltutmish and his army.

The Tabakat-I-Nasiri, an elaborate history written in Persian by Minhaj-i-Siraj Juzjani mentions that Iltutmish took the idols from the temple to Delhi, broke them and placed them at the entrance of the mosque for it to be trampled upon.

A recent 2021 news report of an archaeological excavation at the Mahakal temple complex, claimed to have discovered several mutilated idols and defaced heads, dating back to eleven hundred years ago, which coincides with historical accounts of Iltumish’s destruction and plunder. The excavation also reported the surprise discovery of the remains of an ancient wall purportedly 2100 years old, reputed to have been built by King Vikramaditya (375-415 CE).

In 1734, Maratha ruler Ranoji Shinde’s minister Ramchandrababa Sukhtankar built the present day temple after razing down the mosque built there by Iltutmish. The Marathas continued to take care of the temple’s maintenance into the 19th century. Its marble walkways were restored by the Scindias in the 19th century.

The Buddhism Connect

Mahākāla is a deity common to Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism. In Buddhism, Mahākāla is regarded as the sacred Dharmapāla (“Protector of the Dharma”), while in Hinduism, Mahākāla is a fierce manifestation of the Hindu god Shiva and the consort of the goddess Mahākālī. Mahākāla also appears as a protector deity in Vajrayana, Chinese Esoteric Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. He is known by different names in Mandarin and Cantonese, in Korean, in Vietnamese, and in Japanese.

The Mahakal temple finds a mention in several ancient Indian poetic texts, including that of the great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa’s work, Meghadutam (Purva Megha) composed in the 4th century. He describes the temple as one with a stone foundation, with its ceiling on wooden pillars. Kalidasa mentions the religious rites of the temple including the “nada-aradhana”, the performance of art and dance, during the evening rituals.

The Deity Of Time

The Mahakal’s abode, Ujjain (Avantika, of ancient times ) was an important center of learning for Hindu scriptures, in the 6th and 7th centuries BC. Later, astronomers and mathematicians such as Brahmagupta and Bhaskaracharya made Ujjain their home. Per the Surya Siddhanta, one of the earliest available texts on Indian astronomy dating back to the 4th century, Ujjain is geographically situated at a spot where the zero meridian of longitude and the Tropic of Cancer intersect. In keeping with this theory, many Ujjain temples are in some way or the other, connected to concepts of time and space, both physically and philosophically. In the 18th century, an observatory was built here by Maharaja Jai Singh II, known as the Vedh Shala or Jantar Mantar, comprising 13 architectural instruments to measure astronomical phenomena.

The Mahakal in Ujjain dominates the life of the city and its people, even in the midst of the busy routine of modern preoccupations, and provides an unbreakable link with ancient Hindu traditions. An ancient Swayambhu jyothirlinga as well as Shaktipeeth temple of significance, revered in other nations and across religious traditions; a temple that has weathered the ravages of time, resisted Islamic invasions and continues to offer solace to millions of Hindu devotees now being given a boost by PM Modi’s vision of a spiritually vibrant India. The renovated Mahakal temple corridor, promises to be a pilgrim’s delight.

Tamil Cinema Spoiling Youth, Poisoning Tamil Culture: Puthiya Tamilagam Dr. Krishnasamy Says

Puthiya Tamilagam party chief Dr. K. Krishnasamy has acccused Tamil cinema directors of poisoning young minds and exploiting them by glorifying violence and obscenity.

He also said that a few Tamil cinema directros are peddling distorted history for politcal agenda.

“Tamil directors incorporate more violent and obscene scenes in their films. Watching such films spoils youngsters. If the current trend continues, sickle culture will spread throughout Tamil Nadu. Directors make such films because they are aware of the weaknesses of today’s generation. They mislead them.”, he said.

He further went on to say that Kamal Haasan’s film Virumaandi glorified casteism and sickle culture which has spoilt Tamil culture.

“The 2004 film Chandiyar (Virumandi), which glorifies casteism and sickle culture and features obscene scenes, has damaged Tamil culture. If you constantly promote negative thoughts in three-hour film and only offer positive advice at the end, your message won’t go through to the audience. Tamil Nadu’s politics is decided by the cinema industry, which ought to have been solely for enjoyment.”, Dr. Krishnasamy said.

He also cited the example of Komban film featuring Karthi saying that his party had protested against the movie as it had glorified violence.

“When we protested against Komban movie, which had so many violent scenes, many people in the film industry questioned whether it was appropriate to restrict freedom of speech. The same director who previously stated that movies should only be enjoyed for their entertainment value now advocates using them as a political tool to propagate their agenda.”, he said in light of the recent controversy about using films for politicizing society.

He continued, “What we wanted to convey to the film industry is that you should concentrate solely on your business and refrain from using movies for political purposes.”

He accused the Tamil film industry of distorting Tamil history and fomenting animosity among Tamil communities.

He added, “People in film industry promote Periyar. However, Periyar himself stated that we should abolish cinema as we do alcohol. There have been attempts by the film industry to get Tamil youths addicted to cinema, much like a large number of them became drug addicts in Tamil Nadu. We warn film actors, directors, and producers who attempt to distort Tamil history in order to advance their own political agenda.”

Dr. Krishnasamy also responded to the claim made by some celebrities that there is only Saivism and Vaishnavism in Tamilnadu and no Hinduism.

“Saivam and Vainavam are both branches of the Hindu religion, just as Christianity has divisions such as Roman Catholics, Protestants, and Muslims have Shia and Sunny. I’m curious as to how these folks, who have such a poor understanding of religion, make movies. Indian culture regards everyone and everything as deserving of reverence, including trees. They are all elements of Hinduism. Worshipping the sun god and the cow during Pongal is also part of Hindu tradition. Despite having no knowledge and no basic grasp of the faith, they (film celebrities) speak like intellectuals in the movie. They are all agents of other religion. They are mercinaries.”, he said.

In response to the current debates surrounding Hinduism in Tamil Nadu, he said that they were attempts to establish a narrative for the 2024 parliament elections.

Talking about the incident in Chidambaram few days ago where a polytechnic college student tied Mangalsuthra (Thaali) to a schoolgirl in uniform at the bus stop, Krishnasamy claimed that Tamil cinema had tainted the youths of Tamil Nadu, leading to the boy’s attempt to show his heroism.

He also implied criticism for Nayanthara, who announced the birth of her child just four months after getting married. He also said that the time has come to completely abolish cinema.

Sanatana Dharma For Dravidian Stockist Dummies

Preface

The Dravidian Stockists have an outlandish lexicon of their own in defining and describing terminologies, that will differ from the general understanding of normal people. They will adopt some ingenious interpretation and inference for common terminologies that will suit their own weird logic.

The first example is the word, ‘Dravidam’ itself. It refers to the vast geographical area below Vindhya hills, called Dravida Desam and the area above is termed as Gowda Desam. Again each half is divided into five areas. Thus, Dravida Desam comprises of entire Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra, Karnataka and Dravidam (comprising of the present Tamil Nadu and Kerala). But, our local hindu-baiting die-hard groups refer to ‘Dravidam’ as an exclusive ethnic faction in Tamil Nadu alone. Since, historically majority leaders of their parent unit viz., Justice Party consisted mainly of affluent landlords hailing from Andhra Pradesh, they could not explicitly christen it as “Tamilian” and they peculated the word, ‘Dravidam’ and accorded it an absurd connotation to camouflage and confuse the masses. The plain fact is that their political reach ends with Chennai in the north and Hosur in the west, beyond which even a dog will not cast a glance at them! And nobody dare to question this obvious travesty of truth!

The next terminology in their misappropriation is the term “Sanathana Dharma”.

What Is Sanatana Dharma?

‘Sanatana Dharma’ is touted as the twin brother of ‘Manu’ in the context of receiving condemnation from the crooked, closed-minded Dravidian Stockists! This phrase has been maliciously misinterpreted as something sectarian and belonging to an exclusive domain, so as to facilitate the missionaries and their local lackeys can spread canards among the masses about Hindu way of life in order that they easily become a victim of conversion. As is their wont, they spread an impression that Sanatana Dharma is an esoteric set of rules imposed with selfish interest by narrow minded Brahmins on the rest of the society.

But, it is not so. Sanatana Dharma, on the other hand, is all-inclusive, going beyond caste, creed, religion, nations, species and even beyond time scale. It is transcendental, eternal. ‘सनातन’ (Sanatan) means eternal/perpetual and ‘धर्म’ (Dharm) means law, rule, statute, ethics, scruples, morals, ethos, ideals. [In fact, ‘dharma’ cannot be defined in western languages with an exact equivalent, since the concept itself is absent in their value system] . It encompasses love, sympathy, kindness, compassion, warmth, selfless sacrifice, philanthropy, honesty, ahimsa, purity, goodwill, patience, forbearance, self-restraint, generosity, and asceticism and everything that we refer to as virtue.

To put it simply, Santana Dharma is an eternal way of life to uphold good virtues so that it leads to the spiritual evolvement of a human being.

The All Embracing Aspect Of Sanatana Dharma

Here is a Vedic command. ‘सत्यं वद, धर्मं चर।’ [Always speak the truth, Do only good.] Is it not ubiquitous, universal? Is there any limitations of time, place, person when we say it?

The clarion, crystal-clear declaration of Sanatana Dharma is ‘सर्वे जना: सुखिनो भवन्तु’ [Bliss be unto all.], which encompasses the entire humanity. All the prayers are panoptic, global in their reach and never restricted to any class, cult or creed. The following are just a few of the daily prayers of Sanatana Dharma:

ॐ सर्वेशां स्वस्तिर्भवतु ।
सर्वेशां शान्तिर्भवतु ।
सर्वेशां पुर्णंभवतु ।
सर्वेशां मङ्गलंभवतु ।
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

May there be Well-Being in All,
May there be Peace in All,
May there be Fulfilment in All,
May there be Auspiciousness in All,
Om Peace! Peace! Peace!

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः सर्वे सन्तु निरामया।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चित् दुःखभाग् भवेत्।।

(Let everyone be happy, healthy, safe. Let no one face misery.)

In fact, it goes still further to include not only human beings but all living species as well.

[“We especially pray to that Brahman/Om] for alleviating our current and future diseases. We pray for the successful conduct of this ‘yajna’. We pray for the success of this ‘yajamana’. May there be divine prosperity for us. May our progeny get prosperity. May our herbs (plants) grow upwards. May there be prosperity for our people. May there be prosperity for our animals. OM, may there be peace, may there be peace, may there be peace.”]

—Taittiriya Aranyaka 1.9.7

Unlike other parochial, partisan Abrahamic religions, it does not say, ‘Ours is the only true religion. If you do not follow our path, you are a sinner. You will go to hell’; nor does it incite their followers to pounce upon and kill those who do not yield for conversion to their religion. Sanatana Dharma perceives the entire universe as the manifestation of a single source of divinity and consequently everything we perceive is sacred and a part of that omnipotent being.

‘सर्वं विष्णुमयं जगत्।’
[Everything in the universe is only ‘Vishnu’]

Only the Hindu devotee says with universal outlook, proclaiming that just as all the rain drops from heaven finally reaches the single ocean, let all the prayers addressed by anyone to any deity of one’s choice reach the only one Almighty. In essence, he accepts, without discrimination, any form of idol or symbol or holy book as a true representation of God. For him, Allah, Holy Spirit or Sacred Book or any image is God and only God.

आकाशात् पतितं तोयं यथा गच्छति सागरम् ।
सर्व देव नमस्कार: केशवं प्रति गच्छति ॥

Sanatana Dharma defines succinctly the eternal postulate as under:

श्लोकार्धेन प्रवक्ष्यामि यदुक्तं ग्रन्थकोटिभिः ।
परोपकारः पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ॥

[Virtue and vice described in millions of texts can be defined just in half a stanza: Serving humanity is virtue and harming is vice.]

Sanatana Dharma postulates that one should live a life of lofty principles, not just an unethical existence. One should prefer death to dishonorable survival. We believe that the Almighty is all pervading and, through various universal elements, is witnessing all our actions and even thoughts. Our acceptance in the inescapable law of karma is inborn.

एको देवः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा |
कर्माध्यक्षः सर्वभूताधिवासः साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश्च ||

“The Lord is hidden in the hearts of all.
The eternal witness, pure consciousness,
He watches our work from within, beyond
The reach of the gunas (attributes of mind).”
(Shvetashvatara Upanishad Sl. VI.11]

Srimad Bhagavatam lists those who are all those witnesses:

सूर्योऽग्नि: खं मरुद्देव: सोम: सन्ध्याहनी दिश: ।
कं कु: स्वयं धर्म इति ह्येते दैह्यस्य साक्षिण: ॥
Srimad Bhagavatam 6-1-42.

[The sun, fire, sky, air, deities, moon, evening, day, night, directions, water, land and the Atman [soul] all are witnesses to the activities of the living entity.]

While Vedas and Upanishads prescribe the set of rules for righteous living, Sanatana Dharma also teaches those values through simple stories which everyone can easily learn and practise.

A Few Illustrations

Our ithihasas and puranas are rich in such events where sterling qualities are displayed by many characters. If we study Ramayana, with humility and a sincere aim to learn values of life, instead of looking at it with a caviling and carping bent of mind, each character will be a role model for a particular virtue. Similarly, characters from puranas like Harischandra, Ranthi Deva, Bhishma, Dhruva, Prahlad just to name a few, will teach us worthy lessons of life.

In the history of Tamil kings, Manu Neethi Cholan was ready to sacrifice his own son to render justice to a cow. Pandian Nedunchezhiyan, on realising that he had, in haste, caused the death of Kovalan, sacrificed his life immediately to uphold justice.

By tradition, these episodes are imparted to children during their vital formative years by their parents, teachers and elders, thus building an exemplary foundation for their virtuous future life as a fruit of which the entire society blossoms into an ideal place of harmony and happiness, contentment and consonance, peace and prosperity. The glory and grandeur of a nation is assessed not by the material affluence or modern amenities but by the character and calibre of its people.

The unique feature of Sanatana Dharma is the concept of Karma Theory and the cycle of births and deaths according to one’s deeds. This is not taught in any specific school but it forms part of one’s individual personality since birth. This also acts as a safety valve in society when one comes across occasional inequities in daily life.

Let us look at a few instances of interesting characters who lived upto the tenets of Sanathana Dharma:

The first one is a butcher, by name Dharma Vyadha, who teaches Dharma to a Brahmin sannyasin! The episode occurs in the Vana Parva section of Mahabharata and is told to Yudhisthira, by Sage Markandeya.

The Vyadha teaches the brahmin sannyasin that ‘no duty is ever ugly, no duty is ever impure’, and it is only the way & the spirit in which the work is done, determines its worth. The utterly amazed sannyasin asks the Vyadha as to how he could became so highly illumined even while doing such a filthy, ugly menial work. The Vyadha says that his past Karma (deeds of previous life) had placed him in these circumstances. He asserts that no duty is ever ugly, no duty is ever impure, and that it is only the attitude in which the work is done that determines its worth. He advises that all work must be done with full involvement of heart, soul, mind and intellect by dedicating the work and its results to the Almighty. Through sincere and detached performance of the allotted duty in one’s earthly life itself one can become spiritually illumined and liberated from the cycle of births and deaths. He further says that a decision on what is Dharma under difficult circumstances should be made by sticking to that course of action which leads to the highest good of beings.

The story describes the importance of performance of Swadharma. (prescribed duty or one’s duty in life or one’s own duty).

Incidentally, Lord Krishna Himself mentions about this Butcher in Shrimad Bhagavatam as an enlightened soul.

Another one is Kumarila Bhatta: He went in disguise and learnt Buddhist philosophy with the ulterior motive of defeating it through his own Mimamsa philosophy. Later he atones for the sin and burnt his body slowly, placing himself inside a mound of husk lighted on all four sides. He tells Adi Sankara justifying the gruesome punishment he inflicted upon himself,

‘If someone teaches you even a word he is a guru. Then what can you say about some one who has thought you the whole shastra? By negating what has been thought by the omnipotent guru I have betrayed him. Having learnt the buddhist philosophy from Sugata I used it against him. I am punishing myself for my sins’. he had said thus.

We cannot but look with awe and disbelief at his sense of upholding Dharma at the cost of his life.

Let us look at a more contemporary incident which goes to prove that Sanatana Dharma is ingrained in the DNA of our people, whatever be their position in society even today:

A nationalised bank launched upon a unique scheme during 70’s and 80’s, to cater exclusively to the poorest of the sections of the society, living in pavements, are self-employed and who could not have access to regular bank loans, with amounts starting from as low as ₹500/-. The bank employed cash collectors who would go and receive loan instalments on a daily basis. Thus a cobbler, working at a street corner was given a loan of ₹500/- and he was repaying the instalments regularly. After a few months, he could not be seen and enquiries in the neighbourhood about his whereabouts proved futile. Since the balance due was small, the bank wrote off the loan. Several years passed. When everything was forgotten, a youth came to the bank and said, ‘My father was a cobbler. I learnt that he had borrowed some money from your bank. I want to repay it with interest.’. The bank initially denied his statement and when he insisted, searched their old records and discovered the existence of the old loan. The bank said, ‘Look, the amount is quite small. We have already written it off. You need not pay anything now.’ But, this was what he said, ‘My father is dead. It is my bounden duty, as his son, to ensure that he is no longer a debtor. So, kindly tell me the total amount with interest. I want to pay in full.’. And he paid. That is Sanatana Dharma.

Conclusion

Today, if we look at the personal lives of those who criticize Sanatana Dharma, many of them will be seen leading a furtive and foxy, fraudulent and foul, lavish and lustful, corrupt and criminal, dishonest and debauchery lives with countless skeletons in their cupboards. Naturally, the tenets of Sanatana Dharma are anathema to them. Since they do not relish the common man discovering bitter truths about them, they deflect their attention towards some meaningless pursuits among which, their loathsome attempt to misinterpret ‘Sanatana Dharma’ is one. But, people have discovered their deceitful design. This may be their last wicket and soon it will be all out and everyone will be back in the pavilion!

Tracing The Course Of India’s Foreign Policy

india us tariff threat

Nations and entities are made up of humans and carry the same transferred human attributes, when it comes to their identity, their stature, national character, strengths, weaknesses etc. By its very definition, a person’s or a nation’s reputation is based on external perceptions of their worth versus an internal domestic assessment. This ought to be kept in mind when we, as a nation, complain about another nation’s attitude towards us.

It begins with their perception of us, which is heavily dependent on a carefully nurtured image of ourselves, we want the world to have of us. The idea or perception of India that we want the world to have, ought to be a well thought-out strategy based on our internal needs and security concerns.

The actions and reactions of friendly nations, fair-weather friends and rival nations, depend on their perception of our reputation; their observations of our clarity with internal and foreign policy, their monitoring of our firm resolve on promised actions and their scrutiny of our tenacity in the pursuance of our goals .

By this logic, India cannot and should not whine about its disappointment with negotiations or set-backs in agreements or violation of an unspoken understanding by the likes of the U.S, China, the U.K, Srilanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and yes even our nemesis, the world’s cess pool of terrorism, Pakistan. Clearly, these nations & sometimes others, have disappointed us with their reactions to our requests, measures and actions but can we really blame them?

Our foreign policy, declared domestic and international goals, firm intentions to safeguard our nation’s borders, had never been made clear in an iron-fisted, non-negotiable kind of manner till recent times.

The impression they had of India, was that of a large, confused nation with a wavering mind on its values, goals, policies, actions and reactions to world events.

They had not seen an India with a consistent, firm resolve to stand by her goals regardless of circumstances. They had experienced a weak-minded India whose policies swayed with the direction of the wind, whose actions did not always match her intentions, a country whose diplomats, foreign policy advisors , foreign service personnel were at the mercy of the whims and fancies of corrupt leaders, a country whose political parties played petty, irresponsible political games at the expense of national issues like defense, security, foreign policy, economic policy and financial health.

Since the time of Independence, all the way up to the first BJP central government in the 1990s, the country had followed an outdated, impractical foreign policy influenced by the childish thoughts of one man that did not always have parliamentary consensus, the questionable Nehru: non-alignment policy, no first-use diktat, reluctance to partner with most successful capitalist nations, a local sub-Asian preference, not building on partnerships with countries of similar Indic traditions via Buddhism and a non-expansionist mindset (Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan) etc.

Additionally, we followed an inconsistent policy that blew with the direction of the wind at the behest of populist, political leaders eager to line their pockets rather than protect their motherland.

Foreign policy was so defective that it became a mere extension and reflection of the internal populist, vote-bank politics that reckless politicians were experimenting with – issues of illegal immigration from neighboring nations, the policy on the Middle East, early acknowledgment and tackling of terrorism was not addressed on account of a Muslim appeasement culture in domestic politics, early remedial measures against Communist aggression were not taken for the sake of appeasing certain communities in exchange for votes.

All of the above was an anathema to a robust external policy that should ideally focus on the best interests of the country regardless of political compulsions. A stand-out example of internal vote-bank politics impacting external policy, was our earlier policy on Israel, a half-hearted stand on its right to defend its borders against Islamic violence.

In the early years after Independence, Congress party’s refusal to take a strong stand on matters of international significance , a reluctance of commitment to economic and military alliances with capitalist nations and fickle-minded foreign policy objectives, caused heavy damage to India’s reputation abroad.

Over a period of time, its reputation did not improve with additional policy woes, that the world was paying attention to – India’s dramatic flair for policy change with every regime-change at the center , its continued inaction on matters of national importance including border security, its reluctance to take a resolute stand on international affairs that impacted its own security and at times, its discomfort at standing her ground against powerful influencers.

International observers stopped taking her seriously, did not care to respect her opinions and did not come forward to support her national goals. Our foreign policy, if we could claim to have had a clear and definitive one in the first place, was so flawed, that it simply didn’t matter! Diplomats and the exclusive club of the officers of the Indian Foreign Service were discouraged from offering honest, sincere, unbiased advice to the populist leaders of the country, many of whom did not care to understand the nuances of geo-politics.

Can we blame the world for the confusion we caused, resulting in disrespect, not being taken seriously or outright arm twisting against our own interests?

The Congress and to a lesser degree, other Left leaning parties are directly responsible for the near non-existence of a comprehensive,, consistent , coherent foreign policy for over 50 years!

But then things changed with the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr. Modi and his team looked into India’s foreign policy right away. They put the nation ahead of domestic political compulsions and whims. They worked hard, put the right people in the right roles, listened to the opinions of the nation’s diplomats and IFS officers, held discussions and in return, gave them a framework of concrete policy to work with. And hard work does return dividends.

It’s Mr. Modi’s eighth consecutive year in office and the results are beginning to show. There is crystal-clear clarity about what the country’s interests are.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar’s years of experience in the diplomatic circles coupled with the BJP solid backing on the principle of always putting the nation first, has helped Team Jaishankar, prepare and convey a strong India-centric message to the world, regardless of reactions or repurcussions.

Jaishankar and team are able to do this with agility and effectiveness because they now have the policy-related clarity they require to work in the complex diplomatic corridors of the world.

Putting together dossiers on foreign policy including a clear intent, the negotiable and non negotiable aspects of the bargain, the variables, alternative strategies and back-up plans, is a challenging
tight-rope walk. Fortunately, the team is propelled by an immense motivation from the current BJP dispensation, headed by a leader that assures them of all the support they need.

A strong, confident nation comes to the discussions, with the intent of putting its national interests ahead of others’. This ought to be the spoken or unspoken motto for a strong, confident, resurgent India, as well. There is absolutely nothing wrong in playing fair but also driving a hard bargain in order to take the best piece of the pie, back to your country .

From this stance , the U.S or China or any other nation, is not wrong in putting themselves first and negotiating hard so must, a strong, resilient and future-ready India.

Against the back drop of this reality, each nation does its best but must also accept that they’re not always going to “win”. The challenge of this craft, this profession, is to win as many as you can or as much as you can. Indians must understand this.

We are a people easily swayed by emotions, making us prone to taking things out of context or not considering a situation from the opposition’s perspective.

Consider the recent diplomatic stand off between India and the U.S regarding the U.S sale of F16 maintenance equipment to Pakistan and conversely, India’s continued patronage of Russian military technology, weapons, parts and spare parts. While India has had nothing to lose, history is testimony to what America has gained by siding with Pakistan.

Sections of the American Press can and will dramatize India’s reaction to the U.S sale of the F-16 aircraft-sustainment and related equipment to Pakistan and sections of the Indian Press will dramatize equally, the same surprising, disappointing piece of news, in light of the significant progress made in mutual understanding, agreement and partnership between the two countries, in recent years.

Bottom line, every country is likely to take decisions that have positive economical, social, financial consequences for their own people. We cannot and should not rely on “permanent” friends and cooperative partners on the planet. There may be more permanency to some bilateral relationships than others, relative to our expectations and even that, cannot be taken for granted. It is, was, and always will be best for India to prioritize her own internal and external needs, put them ahead of every other consideration and “friend”, regardless of the circumstances and continue to play her best game in the ever-changing world of international alliances.

On a parting note, think of how the U.S plays this game and the sharp contrast in its words vs. actions, while trying to achieve a fine balance between its varied domestic and international interests – they are not afraid of militarily antagonizing China but continue to remain China’s largest customer!

India is a major emerging economic partner yet the US will continue to court and flirt with India’s neighbors, to keep a regional balance. They threw their weight behind the idea of the QUAD to fight Chinese naval and territorial aggression in the Indo-Pacific region but they continue to supply weapons to Pakistan. There are no hard and fast rules . The only priority for every country that wants to remain free, sovereign and save itself from being swallowed up culturally, economically  militarily is to always, without an exception, play the tricky game of negotiation without compromising on the nation’s territorial and economic priorities.

It will be the policy of all countries to not put all eggs in one basket, test the waters for new relationships, keep the doors of negotiation slightly open, do not burn bridges or make permanent enemies, based on utopian ideas or frivolous issues.

There are no permanent friends, only seasonal ones who may wish to continue for several seasons it may be best to try navigating the choppy waters with several doses of Chanakya Niti.

Let me conclude this pice by quoting Minister Jaishankar’s remarks at a US Press conference:

“On the military equipment, to the best of my knowledge, I don’t think in recent months we have faced any particular problems in terms of servicing and spare parts supply of equipment that we have got in the past from Russia.  Whether we – where we get our military equipment and platforms from, that’s not an issue, honestly, which is a new issue or an issue which has particularly changed because of geopolitical tensions.  I think we look at possibilities across the world.  We look at the quality of technology, the quality of capability, the terms on which that particular equipment is offered, and we exercise a choice which we believe is in our national interest. Now, in – if you were to look at the last 15 years, for example, you can see that we have actually procured a lot from the United States.  If you maybe consider, for example, aircraft – the C-17, the C-130, the P-8, or the Apache helicopter or the Chinooks or the Howitzers, the M777 Howitzers – we have done so from France when we bought recently their Rafale aircraft.  We have done so from Israel. So, we have a tradition of multi-sourcing and for us, how to get the optimal deal from a competitive situation is really what this is all about.”

That’s what is foreign policy is all about.

Toll Plaza Belonging To Pandya-Era Discovered Near Dindigul

A toll plaza used by the Pandya empires in the 12th century AD to collect taxes was discovered near NPR college in Natham, Dindigul district.

Historians Vishwanathar and Thalir Chandrasekar and their research team comprising of Rathina Muralidhar, Anand, Natarajan, and Uma Maheshwari, are studying two historic structures near to N.P.R. College in Velayuthampatti on the Natham-Dindigul Highway.

According to the report prepared by the group, Dindigul-Natham Road has been a highway connecting Chettinad regions. This route was used to transport maritime items from the east coast ports of Thondi and Korkai as well as luxury goods made in the Chettinad region to Kongunadu, including the modern-day Palani, Karur, and Coimbatore.

Along this route, to the east of the intersection of the Sirumalai and Karanthamalai roads, is a toll booth and a large hall (Mandapam) constructed in the 12th century AD by the later Pandyas. A small military unit was also stationed at this location to protect the goods. Two stone tanks had been erected in front of the mandapam for the purpose of fetching water for the horses, and they are fed by the Sirumalai water stream.

The Pandyas’ emblem, which consists of two fish with a bouquet (Chendu) in the middle, the Shivalinga symbol, and Aquaris flags were engraved on the Mandapam’s walls. The architectural pinnacle of the later Pandyas is demonstrated by these structures.

The Kailasanathar temple in Kovilpatti, Natham, received a portion of the toll that was collected at these booths. This is clear from the two-stone inscription designating the Shiva temple as property.

However the site was poorly maintained by the Tamil Nadu government. As a result, historians have urged the archaeological department to renovate the place of great heritage value.

Protests Erupt In Mettur Church Over Reinstating Pastor Accused Of Sexual Misconduct

Following protests against the reinstatement of the Church pastor accused of sexual misconduct in the Church, the police have been deployed in Mettur to provide security.

The Holy Mary Christian Church functioning at Mettur, Salem district, is a prominent church that receives more than 1000 visitors each day. A woman who visited the Church last week is apparently involved in a romantic relationship with Sagayaraj, 55, who has served as the Father in this Church for more than 4 years. Salem District Bishop Rayappan fired the Church Father of Holy Mary Christian Church after learning about this father’s illicit relationship.

However after a short reprieve, the guilty priest apparently rejoined to the same Church. The churchgoers organised a demonstration in front of Holy Mary Church in order to have the Father accused of sexual misconduct removed. In this situation, a different group standing up for the accused Father argued with those who organised protests against him.

Following this incident, churchgoers have lodged a complaint with the Mettur Police, stating that if the Father who has been accused of sexual misconduct is engaged again, he should not serve in the Mettur Holy Mary Church since there may be a law and order concern.

Upon receiving the complaint, police promised to take proper action, and both groups left the area of the altercation.
