From ‘Gandhi Has To Go’ To ‘RSS Killed Gandhi’: Hinduphobic Activist Pieter Friedrich Invokes MK Gandhi To Protest RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat NYC Address

Pieter Friedrich, a US-based Khalistani supporter/activist and Hinduphobic activist, launched a campaign against RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s upcoming appearance at Madison Square Garden, urging New Yorkers to protest the event.

Bhagwat is scheduled to address an event at the venue on August 29. Ahead of the event, Friedrich posted a video from outside Madison Square Garden urging New Yorkers to attend the protest and carry signs opposing the RSS chief.

Friedrich described the RSS as an organisation whose members assassinated Mahatma Gandhi and accused it of being linked to violence against religious minorities and Dalits in India.

In the video, Friedrich said, “They’ve been put into practice repeatedly. Starting from the very first in 1948 when the RSS assassinated Mohandas Gandhi himself as the first act of terrorism in independent India. And yet as you can see as the RSS’s guru praised Hitler’s holocaust, despite the fact that the guru of the RSS, a man who is garlanded and honoured by the chief of the RSS who will be here in 6 days at Madison Square Garden, despite that MSG James Dolan, Jim Dolan is throwing open the doors and rolling out the red carpet to welcome the chief of the RSS”

He was also seen posting on his social media calling detractors of the RSS in New York to arrive with placards and gather at Madison Square Garden when Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to give the talk.

According to a November 2025 report by the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), Friedrich has repeatedly targeted Hindu-American public figures and organisations. The organisation cited his 2022 protest against Hindu-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, where Friedrich reportedly chanted “death to Raja Krishnamoorthi” and “Nazis out, Raja must go.” Civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson subsequently condemned the remarks as “racist, bigoted, incendiary rhetoric.”

CoHNA also accused Friedrich of using “dual loyalty” allegations against Hindu-American politicians, including former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Maryland Deputy Governor Aruna Miller and congressional candidate Sri Preston Kulkarni. The organisation said Friedrich has repeatedly portrayed Hindu-American civic participation as evidence of foreign influence or extremism.

Friedrich’s Past Attacks On Gandhi

Friedrich’s decision to invoke Gandhi while attacking Bhagwat stands in sharp contrast to his own past statements on the Mahatma.

Friedrich celebrated the destruction of a Gandhi statue in Davis, California, in 2020 and later published a blog titled “Gandhi Has to Go,” calling for more Gandhi statues to be destroyed.

Friedrich’s campaign against Gandhi statues can be linked to subsequent vandalism targeting Gandhi statues at Hindu temples in North America, including an attack in Queens, New York, in 2022.

Friedrich now invokes Gandhi to attack the RSS and oppose Bhagwat’s Madison Square Garden appearance. His past record raises an obvious question: why is a man who once called for Gandhi statues to be removed now using Gandhi’s assassination as a central argument against the RSS?
