Time and again, the Christhutva fangs of the Joseph Vijay TVK government keep appearing; to remind the people of Tamil Nadu that it is not a secular government that is in power in the state. Instead, the signs are very clear: it is a Christhutva Fundamentalist government that is ruling Tamil Nadu.
The latest instance of Assembly speaker JCD Prabhakaran identifying as a Vanniyar Christian has furthered the Christhutva character even more.
TN Speaker JCD Prabhakar Identifies As ‘Vanniyar Christian’, Pushes Reservation For Converts
On 28 August 2026, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar identified himself as a “Vanniyar Christian” while advocating reservation benefits for Hindus who converted to Christianity from the Vanniyar community. Speaking in the Assembly, Prabhakar said he was a member of the Tamil Nadu Deccan Vanniyar Christian Association and had personally petitioned former Chief Minister MGR in 1985 to include Vanniyar Christians in the Backward Classes list. He also recalled subsequent efforts under Jayalalithaa to extend reservation benefits to converted Christians. Prabhakar urged the present government to act favourably on the demand, citing the need for a caste-based survey.
Now let us go back a few months ago to point out the blatant Christhutva nature of the party and government.
Joseph Vijay, Kneeling In The Church Before the Ballot
Days before the 23 April 2026 Assembly election, Vijay, filing his nomination as C. Joseph Vijay, made St. Antony’s Church on Wireless Road, Trichy, his first campaign stop, and was filmed advancing on his knees toward the altar. Trichy East, where he contested, has a substantial Christian population; so does Perambur, his other seat. DMK’s own Trichy East MLA, evangelist Inigo Irudayaraj, called it a photo-op and asked why Vijay had suddenly reached for his baptismal name after years of going simply by Vijay.
That was the trailer. The government has spent its months in power delivering the film.
“We Are Happy About It”, In Vijay’s Own Words
Hours after winning the floor test on 13 May 2026 with 144 votes, Vijay told the Assembly: “if anyone considers this as a minority government, we are happy about it. We ourselves are saying, this is a minority government.” He had already told the public on his swearing-in day: “My minority brothers and sisters, the TVK government will stand firmly with you.”
Sitting in the same House that day, Vijay listened to Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin close his speech with a call to eradicate “Sanathanam” and said nothing. A Chief Minister who calls his own government a “minority government” on day one and lets a colleague’s call to eradicate the majority faith tradition pass unanswered on the same day, is not sending a mixed signal.
Bible Verses From The Speaker’s Chair
Vijay personally moved the motion that put John Christian Devavaram Prabhakar aka JCD Prabhakar in the Speaker’s chair on 12 May 2026. Prabhakar is a career lay evangelist who has run a personal Bible-distribution ministry since 2004, scaling, by his own telling, from 50 Bibles handed out on Chennai city buses to 5,000 a month. He opened Assembly proceedings by reciting three Bible verses from the Chair, the first time Bible verses have been read from that chair in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Make Use Of Minority Govt, Says JCD Prabhakar
On 9 June 2026, addressing the Tamil Nadu Christian Churches Federation, Prabhakar said the government has shown “abundant signs demonstrating its genuine concern for the minority population” and urged the Federation to “make the best use of this opportunity.” He then read out its wishlist and pledged to carry it to Vijay personally: fast-tracked NOCs for church construction, dedicated burial grounds for independent churches in every district, a monthly stipend for evangelists and church workers, a pilgrimage subsidy to Israel he wants raised from ₹37,000 to ₹1 lakh, and closure of liquor shops on Good Friday.
TVK MLAs Featured In Christian Conference Event
On 16 July 2026, Prabhakar and several sitting TVK MLAs were listed for a Christian Churches and Pastors Federation conference with Vijay’s face on the event poster.
Launch Of Jesus Life Film Trailer – JCD Prabhakar Makes Appearance
On 25 July 2026, at the trailer launch of a biographical film on the life of Jesus, Prabhakar told the audience: “We are rapidly moving towards an era where proclaiming the Gospel is becoming increasingly difficult” – a victimhood claim from the constitutional occupant of the Speaker’s Chair, in a state whose Chief Minister is himself Christian and whose government had, weeks later, whipped the Assembly to shield foreign religious funding from scrutiny.
Participates In Anti-Abortion Rally
JCD Prabhakar has also appeared at a church-organised “anti-abortion” awareness programme.
Appointing Felix Gerald As TN Minority Commissions Chief
On 7 August 2026, Joseph Vijay appointed party spokesperson and YouTuber as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission for a three-year term.
TVK Finance Minister Invokes Christian Identity
On 10 August 2026, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson invoked his Christian faith while responding to criticism over his use of Tamil in the Assembly. Defending his manner of speaking, Wilson said, “My Christianity has taught me the language of love, peace, and compassion—things that half the people here wouldn’t understand, no matter how much Tamil they have studied.” He added, “I have read this in the Bible, I am a born Christian.”
Paul Dhinakaran at the Table
On 10 August 2026, Joseph Vijay met a delegation of Christian and Muslim minority organisations to discuss the FCRA Amendment Bill. Among those present was preacher-evangelist Paul Dhinakaran.
Twenty-four hours later, the Tamil Nadu Assembly took up a resolution opposing the Bill. This was not just a coincidence in timing. The government met an evangelist over the Bill and took up the same demand in the Assembly the very next day.
The Resolution That Gave the Game Away
The FCRA Amendment Bill was introduced to tighten checks on such funding, which has repeatedly featured in investigations into unlawful conversion. But a state government using its Assembly to oppose tighter checks on that funding is not a neutral move. By opposing the Bill, the government has made its Christhutva position clear.
TVK Came To Power By Following Bible, Says JCD Prabhakar
On 14 August 2026, JCD Prabhakar claimed that the party came to power by following the teachings of the Bible. Speaking at a Christian foundation’s annual event in Chennai, Prabhakar said he had been closely observing the TVK government and claimed it was being described as corruption-free. He asserted that knowledge, talent and ability come from God, adding that those who believe in Him would receive good things. Prabhakar then linked this belief directly to TVK’s electoral success, stating that the government was formed because it had followed the Bible.
All This Points To A Fundamentalist Christhutva Fundamentalist Govt
Taken together, these instances reveal a consistent pattern. The Chief Minister openly embracing his Christian identity, the Speaker invoking the Bible from the Assembly Chair, identifying himself as a “Vanniyar Christian” and pushing reservation for converts, urging Christian bodies to “make the best use” of the government, ministers publicly foregrounding their Christian faith, meetings with evangelical figures, opposition to tighter scrutiny of foreign religious funding, and finally the Speaker claiming that TVK came to power by following the Bible cannot simply be brushed aside as coincidence.
This is no longer about individual faith. The cumulative record points to a government increasingly shaped by Christian institutional interests and openly advancing a Christian political agenda. By any reasonable reading of the evidence presented above, the TVK government is exhibiting the unmistakable characteristics of a Christhutva fundamentalist government.
