Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam MLA Mustafa has expressed outrage over the film Amaran, the biopic of Major Mukund Varadarajan in which the officer fights terrorists in Kashmir who happen to be rabid Islamist terrorists.
In a press interaction circulated by Polimer News, Mustafa accused the DMK of double standards. He asked why the party had not condemned the film and questioned Sivakarthikeyan’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
He asked how DMK leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, could watch and endorse a film that, in his telling, portrayed Muslims in a hostile light. He then pointed to Sivakarthikeyan’s later meeting with the Union Defence Minister and asked whose “favour” made that meeting possible. The implication was that the DMK talks minority politics in Tamil Nadu while staying quiet when a commercially successful Army film shows Kashmir militants as the enemy.

Four days earlier, the same MLA had grown emotional in the Tamil Nadu Assembly while speaking about the suffering of Muslims around 1999. He alleged that DMK voices had labelled Muslims as terrorists.
Amaran is a 2024 biographical war film on Major Mukund Varadarajan, a Tamil officer of the Rajput Regiment attached to 44 Rashtriya Rifles, who was killed in 2014 during an operation against terrorists in Shopian, Kashmir.
It opened on 31 October 2024 and became one of the year’s biggest Tamil hits.
On release, several Muslim organisations in Tamil Nadu did protest. The SDPI demonstrated outside Kamal Haasan’s office and accused the film of pushing ‘anti-minority’ feeling. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader M.H. Jawahirullah compared it to The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story. Rabid Dravidianist Thirumurugan Gandhi called it “Army propaganda.” There were protests, demands for a ban, police protection at theatres, and even a petrol-bomb attack on a Tirunelveli cinema screening the film.
Mustafa is not a fringe activist. He is the TVK MLA from Madurai Central, a Muslim face of a party that sold itself in 2026 as a secular alternative to the DMK–AIADMK order.
In May 2026 he echoed Udhayanidhi Stalin’s “eradicate Sanatana Dharma” line, saying TVK too had entered politics to abolish Sanatana. That remark triggered a national row and questions about why Chief Minister Vijay did not discipline him. He later issued a clarification that he was not against any religion.
Vijay himself starred in Thuppakki and Beast, films that also featured Islamist terror plots and drew protests from Muslim groups,
The DMK has long presented itself as the protector of Muslims and Christians in Tamil Nadu. Now TVK is doing the same minority appeasement politics.
