Study Exposes Alarming Reality Of Manual Scavenging In Tamil Nadu: 43 Deaths In 18 Months, Most Victims From Dalit Community

Over the past year and a half, Tamil Nadu has recorded 43 fatalities resulting from manual scavenging, with a significant majority of the victims belonging to the Dalit community.  A recent study by the Social Awareness Society For Youths (SASY) revealed that only 25 of these fatalities were officially reported, leaving many cases unaccounted for. These manhole deaths in Tamil Nadu have raised serious concerns about the safety and rights of workers engaged in manual scavenging.

These manhole deaths in Tamil Nadu has raised concerns about the credibility of the much-hyped Dravidian Model that the DMK government prides itself on.

Most of the victims of these tragic incidents belong to the Dalit community, emphasising the alarming social implications of this grave issue. Despite the existence of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, the local authorities have failed to effectively implement the law, resulting in continued hazardous conditions for manual scavengers.

In response to this distressing situation, SASY took a proactive step by organising a public hearing in Coimbatore. During the hearing, victims of manhole deaths courageously came forward to share their heart-wrenching stories and submitted formal complaints. The panel, comprising social activists and legal experts, attentively listened to the accounts, aiming to shed light on the plight of these affected families.

VA Ramesh Nathan, the director of SASY, revealed the disheartening findings of their study. Out of the 34 incidents related to manhole deaths that they investigated, a staggering 43 deaths occurred, but only 25 were officially reported. Only 20 individuals have been arrested out of the 12 reported cases, and surprisingly, no charge sheets have been filed so far. The majority of the victims in these incidents belong to the Dalit community

Addressing the victims directly, Ramesh Nathan expressed his concern and vowed to push for action. He emphasised that the state government must strictly enforce the law and ensure the proper rehabilitation of affected families, especially considering the majority of the victims are from the marginalised Dalit community.

One of the heartrending accounts came from B Vasanthi, a 49-year-old widow from Red Hills near Chennai. She tearfully narrated the tragedy of losing her husband, Baskar (53), on 15 May 2023, due to asphyxiation while cleaning a septic tank. With her husband being the sole breadwinner of the family, Vasanthi and her surviving family members, including her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, are now left struggling for survival. Despite two months passing, they have not received any favourable response from the government regarding financial assistance.

Henri Tiphagne from People’s Watch, who was part of the panel, offered guidance to the grieving families regarding the legal avenues available to seek justice and compensation for their irreplaceable loss.

As the public hearing concluded, the urgent need for action and reform in Tamil Nadu’s approach to manual scavenging became painfully evident. The testimonies of the victims and their families serve as a poignant reminder of the grim reality they face daily and the pressing responsibility of the authorities to address this deeply rooted issue promptly.

On July 30, 2023, the Times of India reported that the day after the Social Awareness Society For Youths (SASY) public hearing, a case of manual scavenging was witnessed in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

It is notable that Ma Venkatesan, Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis said that Tamil Nadu ranks first in the manhole deaths. From 1993 to till now, the official government data reveals that nearly 225 sanitation workers died due to manhole cleaning.

Is DMK Govt Using Centre’s Money To Fund Its ₹1000 For Women Scheme?

stalin dmk cash

In a recent development that has sparked controversy, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government has come under heavy criticism for naming the women’s rights programme after the late leader M. Karunanidhi.

The implementation of the Monthly Grant Scheme for women beneficiaries is scheduled to commence on 15 September 2023, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the Dravidian leader C. N. Annadurai.

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party State President Annamalai’s accusations from last year have resurfaced alleging that the DMK government.

In the statement released by K Annamalai, he stated that the central government has been allocating huge amounts of funds to the states every year for the development of Scheduled Castes. Every year several thousands of crores of funds are given to the states for the implementation of central government schemes to benefit the people of the Scheduled Caste communities.

In this situation, out of the funds allocated for the SCSP scheme, ₹2900 crores remain unused since the previous regime (2016-2021) and during the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime from 2021-2022, the government has not spent ₹2418 crores out of the allocated as reported by Indian Express. In addition, he stated that he was shocked to hear that the Tamil Nadu government had not spent ₹10,466 crores out of the ₹16,442 crores allocated by the central government to the brothers and sisters of Scheduled Caste communities in Tamil Nadu as per the information till December 2023.

He also stated that many basic needs like educational rehabilitation schemes, employment opportunities, libraries, student hostels were not fulfilled. The complete non-utilisation of the allocated funds shows the ruling government’s cowardice and gross indifference towards the backward sections of the society.

He stated that some of the problems faced by Tamil Nadu Scheduled brothers and sisters on a daily basis are due to lack of sufficient staff in the State Scheduled Tribes Commission and the inadequate allocation of funds from the state government.

In his tweet, Selvakumar, the vice president of Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party’s Industrial Cell, expressed his views on the scheme, suggesting that it should be renamed as “Pradhan Mantri Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam” to better reflect its genuine purpose and intent.

Seeman, the chief coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK),  also questioned the involvement of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi in the ₹ 1,000 Urimai Thogai scheme for women, stating, “What authority does Kalaignar have over this scheme?”

It is notable that the DMK government’s announcement of a ₹7000 crore allocation in the budget 2023-24 for the Monthly Assistance Scheme For Women sparked outrage from all sides, as the money would not be enough to fulfill the DMK government’s election promise of providing assistance to all 2.2 crore ration cards.

Double Standards & Hypocrisy Of Pinarayi Vijayan & CPIM Mouthpiece In Minor Girl Murder Case

A five-year-old girl, in Kerala’s Aluva, Ernakulam district was sexually assaulted and strangled to death by a man named Asfaq Aslam, who had recently moved into their building. Aslam was arrested on the night of 28 July 2023, but his intoxication made it difficult for the police to extract information. The girl went missing on the evening of 28 July 2023, and CCTV footage implicated him. Aslam confessed to the crime and led the police to the location where he left the child’s lifeless body in a marshy area near Periyar River. A vigilant individual spotted the girl with the accused in a nearby market and alerted the police after seeing a missing post about her on Facebook. The incident caused an uproar on social media, with people actively assisting in the search operation. The girl’s body was taken to her school for people to pay their respects, and calls for the death penalty for the accused grew stronger.

However, local news media provided conflicting information about his origin, with some sources claiming he is from Bihar, while others stated he is from Assam. Asfaq Alam claimed that he traded the girl for money with a man named Sakeer Hussain. Based on Alam’s statement, the police arrested two more individuals who were allegedly involved in child trafficking.

Hypocrisy Of Pinarayi Vijayan & The CPIM

Netizens expressed their frustration and anger over the apparent double standard shown by Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, in addressing cases of child victims.

They pointed out that while the Chief Minister actively tweeted and spoke out about the gang rape of Asifa in Kathua in 2018, he remained silent and did not issue any statements or tweets regarding the recent case, which happened within his own state.
People on social media questioned the disparity in the Chief Minister’s response, as they saw no apparent difference between the two cases that would justify his silence in the 5-year-old girl’s tragedy, except for the fact that the victims of the two cases come from different communities.

Netizens also criticised the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and its newspaper Deshabhimaani for displaying double standards in their coverage of two separate incidents.

They point out that when a horrendous video from Manipur circulated, Deshabhimaani prominently featured the news on its front page, along with cartoons depicting the victim as Mother India. However, in the 5-year-old girl’s case, the newspaper made no effort to give the news similar prominence. Other newspapers, in contrast, placed the child’s case on their front pages. This has led to accusations of the CPIM and Deshabhimaani trying to downplay or hide the wrongdoings of individuals from a specific community, leading to accusations of bias and double standards in their reporting.

5 Year Old Minor Girl In Kerala Abducted, Raped And Murdered By Asfaq Aslam

A tragic incident occurred in Kerala’s Ernakulam district where a five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and strangled to death by a man named Asfaq Aslam who had recently moved into their building. The accused was arrested on Friday night, but due to his intoxicated state, it took hours to extract information from him. The girl, hailing from Bihar, had gone missing on Friday evening after CCTV footage showed her being taken away by the accused.

The police identified the culprit as Asfaq Aslam from Bihar through the CCTV footage and took him into custody at 9.30 pm. However, due to his high level of intoxication, he initially couldn’t provide coherent answers to their questions. On Saturday (29 July 2023) morning, Aslam confessed to the crime and led the police to where he had left the child’s body in a marshy area, covered with garbage and sacks.

During the search, another person had spotted the girl with the accused in a nearby market and informed the police after seeing a missing post on Facebook. The police apologized on social media to the girl’s family for not being able to reunite her with them and defended themselves against accusations of delay.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with people helping in the search operation. The girl’s body was taken to her school for people to pay their respects while demanding the death penalty for the accused.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Union V Muraleedharan condemned the heinous crime and called for stringent action against the accused. They emphasized the need to address crimes against women and highlighted the importance of keeping proper records of inter-state workers in Kerala.

DMK Files: Explosive Alleged Audio Clip Of DMK Leader Exposes Internal Turmoil In Party

In a stunning revelation, a leaked audio clip alleged to be of N Karthik, former MLA and Coimbatore Urban district secretary of DMK, has sent shockwaves through the political landscape. In the audio, Karthik is heard discussing sensitive issues related to cash distributions, internal power struggles, and the selection of mayors, casting a shadow over the party’s credibility.

The audio, which was released by Tamil Nadu BJP leader Annamalai, has sparked heated debates and accusations of corruption within the DMK.

According to the purported audio of Karthik, women in the region are expressing dissatisfaction with the items provided for Pongal and are demanding cash instead. The party’s decision to offer 21 types of goods had become a subject of ridicule last yer, potentially impacting the DMK’s standing with the public.

“Already for two years, they (referring to AIADMK government) gave ₹500 and ₹2500 to people. Now women folks are saying you could’ve given money for Pongal. They’re asking ‘who asked for the 21 items?’. That too Vikatan has made fun of. For everything, there has been plus and minus.”, the man can be heard saying.

Furthermore, Karthik’s alleged audio expose deep divisions within the party, as the  suggests that a single individual should make crucial decisions, akin to the late Jayalalitha’s leadership style. He cites examples where announcements and actions were exclusively attributed to her, reinforcing the notion that a clear and authoritative leadership approach is vital for the party’s success.

“In politics, there should be a single leader who takes the decisions. When Jayalalithaa was there, only Jayalalithaa and Sasikla took decisions and there is no power for any third person. Even if there was, the announcement would all come in Jayalalithaa’s name. If she can sack 100 people at once, the instructions would come from Jayalalithaa. Not every tom, dick and harry can enter that house. If they (DMK) doesn’t rein in, it is very difficult.”, he says.

Candid comments on internal DMK figures like ‘Anna Nagar’ Karthi and Anbil Mahesh Poiyyamozhi allegedly made by Karthik have also drawn attention. The audio calls them to be power centres an highlights instances of alleged inaccessibility and lack of proper political engagement, which could potentially undermine the DMK’s popularity in the region.

“Around 200-300 people stand outside ‘Anna Nagar’ Karthi’s house. They say that he is in meeting but he would be doing exercises above. He wakes up at 8:30 AM, and does exercises till 10:30 AM. Only those people who are in business go up and talk to him about his business as he keeps doing his exercise. They talk about tenders, etc. He will come down only at 11:30 AM. He is one power centre.”, Karthik’s alleged audio says.

“Nobody knows where Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi stays even in Trichy. People there say that one can even manage to meet KN Nehru but not Mahesh. People are watching whatever is happening very closely.”, he says.

Delimitation of district secretaries is also a contentious issue raised allegedly by the DMK leader in the audio clip.

“If this had been an intelligent government, delimitation would’ve been done in Coimbatore once they came to power and made a ‘gents’ as mayor. Then only the party will stay strong. You can develop the party only like that. You can’t grow the party with 100 councillors who are the lower level.”, says the man in the audio.

He also said that KN Nehru does only “grazes grasses on the surface”. He calls for greater involvement of KN Nehru in this matter, implying that proper delimitation could have been completed months ago, strengthening the party’s prospects.

He further questions the idea of having a woman mayor for Coimbatore saying “People from my family can become a mayor. Anybody can become a mayor. In an area like Coimbatore, what good can the women achieve in the party by becoming a mayor? Can 1 woman mayor answer to 10 men MLAs? Can she face them?”

He suggests that Coimbatore requires a male mayor to tackle the challenges posed by ten MLAs effectively and stated that women as Mayor are ineffective and won’t contribute for party’s strength.

It is notable that this audio comes in the wake of BJP Tamil Nadu releasing the second part of the DMK Files.

Following the release of the audio, DMK’s Coimbatore Urban district secretary N Karthik has lodged a police complaint claiming that the audio was fabricated in order to tarnish his image in the party.

DMK Ally MLA Jawahirullah ‘Apologizes’ After The Commune’s Report On Anti-Hindu Banner Depicting Manipur Horror

A picture of a banner supposedly erected by an alleged Islamist party Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) had surfaced on social media in which Hindu Gods Ram, Lakshman and Sita were portrayed in a derogatory manner while targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over Manipur violence.

The banner had caricatured images of Narendra Modi as Lord Ram and Amit Shah as Lord Lakshman holding bow and arrows standing on either sides of a naked woman (Goddess Sita), hinting at the horrific incident in Manipur in which a woman was paraded naked and sexually assaulted. The Indian tricolour can be seen covering the female genitals and the breasts of the caricatured woman.

“Massive protest against sexual assaults on women in Manipur”, reads the lines in Tamil below.

The banner was erected by MH Jawahirullah’s party Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) belonging to Batlagundu Town in Dindigul district.

MMK is an Islamist fundamentalist party in Tamil Nadu headed by M. H. Jawahirullah who is currently an MLA from Papanasam. The MMK is part of the DMK’ “Secular Progressive Alliance”.

The incident was brought to light by VSP Marutharaj who is the District Secretary of BJP Tamil Nadu’s Data Management Cell, Dindigul West following which there was social media outrage.

https://twitter.com/Kunthavi5/status/1685061628428255234

The Commune had reported about the incident on 29 July 2023 and had also reached out to Jawahirullah for comments.

After social media outrage by Hindus and The Commune’s report on the incident, Jawahirullah took to social media and apologized for the derogatory board placed by members of his party.

He accepted that an unsolicited billboard for this demonstration was put up by a few party members. He claimed that when it came to the knowledge that such an advertisement board had been put up, the ‘top management of the party immediately took action to remove the board. He further claimed that it was removed even before the protest meeting started.

“Manithaneya Makkal Katchi is not a party that works with the intention of hurting members of any religion. Those responsible for this unwelcome banner were severely reprimanded. The party has taken disciplinary action against them. I’m sorry if anyone’s feelings were hurt by this banner.”, Jawahirullah said.

It is noteworthy to mention that the DMK government has been alleged to be going after individuals who criticize the government on social media through posts and memes by slapping non-bailable sections under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) like Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief). No action seems to have been taken against Jawahirullah’s MMK whose banners warrant action against the above sections of the Indian Penal Code.

9 Instances When TNM Tried To Whitewash Incidents Where Perpetrators Belonged To One Community

The News Minute, is a rabid leftist and Dravidian Stockist portal that has often been found reporting half-truths and misleading information. The whitewashing of the Udupi video scandal is their latest attempt to victimize the victim and give and trivialize the horrific incident of 3 Muslim girls who had allegedly recorded girls from the Hindu community in their college bathroom.

TNM brushed it off as an instance of ‘bullying’ and stated that the video was promptly deleted upon the victim’s confrontation. According to the article, the girls involved defend their actions as a mere “prank”.

Here are 9 instances in the recent past where TNM has gone above and beyond to portray one specific community as victims even when the real victim would have been someone else, most often a Hindu.

Instance 1 – Butchering Of Shraddha Walkar By Aftab

Last year, we all came to hear about the horrific butchering of Shraddha by her partner Aftab Ameen Poonawalla. Aftab had a serious argument with his partner Shraddha, and things took a horrifying turn. He used a sharp weapon to dismember her body into 35 pieces and even bought a fridge to hide them! What’s even more chilling is that he threw those gruesome body parts at 18 different locations in Delhi over the course of 18 days. To make matters worse, he tried to avoid getting caught by sneaking out in the early morning with 1-2 body parts in a plastic bag and dumping them in a forest. Yes, we all know what happened.

As always, TNM hid the name of the perpetrator in a bid to secularise the gruesome incident.

TNM’s Editor-in-Chief Dhanya Rajendran shared an Indian Express article titled “A toxic and abusive relationship that ended in death” on her Twitter handle and she wrote the following caption, “Shraddha continued their relationship as Aaftab emotionally blackmailed her and said he would die by suicide if she leaves him. The level of entitlement such men have”.

Instance 2 – Giving Communal Colour To Petty Fight

On a different occasion, The News Minute allegedly attempted to spark communal tensions by sensationalising a minor altercation between college students that occurred in a little-known town within the Dakshin Kannada district. The article titled “Dakshina Kannada: Muslim man beaten up for speaking to Hindu woman classmate” claimed that Mohammed Saneef was allegedly attacked for befriending a Hindu classmate. However, the article didn’t mention anything about stalking or harassment. Instead, the police referred to it as a “love-related case.”

Interestingly, The News Minute seemingly made efforts to associate the students who assaulted Saneef with a Hindu rights organisation, even though there was no direct evidence supporting such a link.

Netizens pointed out this starkly contrasting reporting style of TNM:

Instance 3 – Justifying Crime Because Perpetrator Felt Disrespected

In March 2023, during Holi celebrations in Telangana, a man named Mohammad Shabbir set his ‘friend’ Anjaiah on fire after the latter playfully smeared Holi colours on him. The News Minute “reported” the incident while seemingly trying to portray the perpetrator, Shabbir, in a less negative light and subtly shifted the blame onto the Hindu victim. They initially wrote an article justifying Shabbir’s actions, claiming he felt disrespected and insulted, and doused Anjaiah in petrol before setting him ablaze. You can read our report here.

However, after outraged Twitter users called attention to this biased reporting, TNM modified the text of their report. A Twitter user named Sai called out TNM’s one-sided story, tagging Dhanya Rajendran, Editor-in-Chief of TNM, and asking, “Who writes copy like this? It almost sounds like a justification. Even by #TNMurasoli standards, this is terrible.”

After facing severe backlash on social media for their insensitive reporting, The News Minute (TNM) modified the content of their article without offering an apology for the initial version. The article was published on March 9, two days after the disturbing incident took place. The headline used by The News Minute (TNM) read: “Upset at being smeared with color, a man allegedly sets friend ablaze in Telangana.” In doing so, TNM appeared to defend the perpetrator right from the start, suggesting that the victim was at fault for smearing colour on Muhammed Shabbir during the Holi festival.

Instance 4 – Shifts Blame On Victim Again, Calls People “Hindu Mob”

In May 2023, an incident in Telangana involving a gas cylinder delivery agent named Lingam and Imran Ahmed came to light after a video of their altercation went viral on social media. Lingam, who was wearing a Hanuman Mala at the time, went to deliver a gas cylinder to Imran’s house. When Lingam asked for the empty cylinder, Imran’s mother refused to hand it over, leading to a heated argument between her and Lingam. Imran joined in and assaulted Lingam with chappals while insulting the Hanuman Mala.

Later, Hindu organisations, including the BJP, RSS, and Hindu Vahini, were informed about the incident and gathered at the scene, resulting in a fight where Imran was attacked by a group of men. However, media reports portrayed the attackers as a “Hindu mob” and overlooked the role of Imran and his family in inciting the tension.

However, media outlets like The News Minute focused more on portraying the Hindu group’s attack on Imran as the main story while downplaying Imran’s instigation and assault as a minor event. Phrases like “Hindu Mob” and “Hanuman devotees are perpetrators” were used in their articles, allegedly attempting to stereotype Hindu Hanuman devotees negatively.

It is to be noted that the entire episode of violence might not have occurred if Imran and his mother had followed the customary procedure and returned the empty cylinder. However, The News Minute’s article, edited by its Editor-in-Chief Dhanya Rajendran, made it appear as if the Hindu group attacked Imran’s biryani shop for no apparent reason.

Instance 5 – Udupi Video Scandal

The Udupi video recording horror where 3 female Muslim students video recorded their Hindu classmates in the washroom of the institution secretly. There are reports of this happening for over a year – read more here and here

The News Minute as mentioned above played the he said-she said card and reported the horrendous incident as a “prank” and whitewashed the whole issue to make the perpetrators look like victims especially because of last year’s Hijab controversy in the region.

Instance 6 – Bulli Bai/Sulli Deal Issue

The Bulli Bai and Sulli Deal controversy emerged in 2021 and 2022 when a group of teenagers created an app on GitHub, posting publicly available pictures of Muslim women and seemingly “auctioning” them. While these images were not meant for actual sale and were publicly accessible, they still caused indignation and humiliation among the Muslim women whose pictures were involved.

While the distress caused because of these actions especially since it relates to the misuse of images on the Internet is understandable, it needs to be acknowledged that the teenagers’ actions were foolish and ignorant, not fully comprehending the potential consequences of their actions. This action can be placed under the category of a “prank”, a disgusting one at that.

The response from the Muslim community and their ideological supporters was deemed excessive. The teenagers involved in the incident faced extended periods of imprisonment, and the incident sparked worldwide anger about Islamophobia and the perceived oppression of Muslim men by “Hindu fascists.” As a consequence, the teenagers were labeled as Hindu terrorists, and the entire Hindu community faced scrutiny in connection to the victimisation of Muslims, particularly Muslim women.

Dhanya Rajendran, who is currently defending TNM’s stance on the Udupi case as a “prank”, previously advocated for trafficking charges to be applied to the arrested teenagers involved in the incident.

This would have resulted in the teenagers facing jail time for offences related to prostitution and flesh trade, despite their actions involving publicly available images on an app. In addition to this, she exposed the identities of the accused teenagers, including an 18-year-old girl.

A few more instances where TNM tries to paint one particular community as supreme and peace-loving:

Instance 7 – Justifying Alleged Land Grab By Waqf Board

In September 2022, TNM published an article where it attempted to establish that the village of Thiruchendurai belonged to the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board, rather than the rightful landowners. According to the report, the Waqf Board sent a letter to the Registration Department with documents claiming ownership of the entire village and requesting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for any land registration in the area.

As the news created controversy, the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board decided to “temporarily allow” property-related transactions in the Tiruchendurai village. The TNM article quoted the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board Chairman, Abdul Rahman, who asserted that their records show the Waqf Board owns 389.03 acres of land in Thiruchendurai.

TNM further corroborated the Waqf Board’s claims by stating, “TNM also verified the Gazette Notification number 570 to confirm that the land had been registered as Waqf property on June 27, 1956.”

Instance 8 – Denying The Existence Of Love Jihad

The release of “The Kerala Story” created a buzz, discussing topics that were previously avoided by the ‘Left-Liberal’ intelligentsia of Lutyens Delhi. The News Minute (TNM) published articles attempting to present an alternative narrative to “The Kerala Story.”

TNM published an article highlighting communal harmony stories from Kerala as an alternative to the movie, but it was criticised for trying to ignore the truth behind “Love Jihad” and brushing it aside with other stories. The article in TNM failed to engage in a real discussion about Love Jihad as a social issue. The practice of using love as a means for proselytising by Jihadists is a well-documented reality.

Malappuram, once a Hindu-majority district, saw demographic changes over time, with Muslims now comprising over 70% of the population. Factors contributing to this change include the Moplah rebellions and the invasion of Tipu Sultan, which led to the deaths of many Hindus and the destruction of Hindu temples. The Hindu population in Malappuram declined due to these events, leading to it becoming a Muslim-majority district. Instances of forced conversions to Islam and Love Jihad have been reported in Malappuram. TNM’s response to “The Kerala Story” only appeared to divert attention from the issue of Love Jihad and deny its ugly existence in India.

Instance 9 – Peddling Half-Truths About Halal Certification

In April 2022, The News Minute published an “explainer” on Halal Certification showcasing it in a positive light by stating that it guarantees hygienic and non-toxic food prepared according to Islamic law. However, the article whitewashed the impact of imposing Islamic practices on non-Muslims and justified the act of blowing into food.

The article ignored several problematic points about Halal and these include:

  1. Imposes Islamic hegemony over non-Muslims, as non-Muslims have no choice but to consume meat slaughtered in the Halal way.
  2. Halal slaughter is considered cruel, as it leads to slow death for animals, unlike Jhatka slaughter.
  3. Halal effectively discriminates against non-Muslims in the meat industry, leading to monopolization by Muslims.
  4. The practice of Halal is seen as misogynistic, as only Muslim men are allowed to perform the Islamic prayer during meat cutting.
  5. Halal certification is often issued by organisations with alleged links to supporting terrorists and jihadists, inadvertently funded by non-Muslim consumers.

The consistent pattern in these “news” articles is the evident bias shown by TNM towards a specific community, where it seemingly downplays heinous crimes and refuses to acknowledge the underlying ideology driving that community’s actions. This has raised curiosity among netizens regarding whether The News Minute will continue to assert itself as an objective “news” portal or openly acknowledge its alignment as a mouthpiece for the leftists, Islamists and the Dravidian stocks.

Banners Derogating Hindu Gods Allegedly Erected By DMK Ally Jawahirullah’s MMK During Protest Against Manipur Violence

A picture of a banner supposedly erected by an alleged Islamist party Manithaneya Makkal Katchi has surfaced on social media in which Hindu Gods Ram, Lakshman and Sita have been derogated while targeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over Manipur violence.

The banner shows caricatured images of Narendra Modi as Lord Ram and Amit Shah as Lord Lakshman holding bow and arrows standing on either sides of a naked woman (Goddess Sita), hinting at the horrific incident in Manipur in which a woman was paraded naked and sexually assaulted.

“Massive protest against sexual assaults on women in Manipur”, reads the lines in Tamil below.

The banner was supposedly erected by MH Jawahirullah’s party Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) belonging to Batlagundu Town in Dindigul district.

On 21 July 2023, members of the MMK held a protest in Dindigul district condemning the heinous incident in which two women were paraded naked by a mob. It is unclear whether the incendiary banner was erected during this protest.

MMK is an Islamist fundamentalist party in Tamil Nadu headed by M. H. Jawahirullah who is currently an MLA from Papanasam. The MMK is part of the DMK’ “Secular Progressive Alliance”.

Jawahirullah is also the head of another outfit named Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam, which is also purportedly seen by some as an Islamic fundamentalist organization.

Many on social media questioned the DMK government’s inaction on those who erected the anti-Hindu banner.

The Commune tried to reach out to MMK but no response was received until the article was published. The article will be updated once The Commune receives a response.

Update: Following The Commune’s report on the incident, Jawahirullah apologized on his social media.

Renowned Publisher Badri Seshadri Arrested By TN Police

Badri Seshadri, publisher of several quality books through the publishing house ‘Kizhakku Pathippagam’ was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police on the early hours of Saturday (29 July 2023).

The reasons for the arrest is not clear but Mr. Badri has been charged with Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) have been mentioned in the FIR.

The case has been registered at the Kunnam Police Station in Perambalur district based on a complaint given by one advocate Kaviyarasu.

Badri has been arrested regarding his comments in an interview to a YouTube channel about the Manipur issue.

“Yesterday, the Supreme Court like a big…. I don’t know what word to say. ‘If you can’t do it (contain the violence), we will get down and do it.’ We should give a gun in the hand of Chandrachud (Chief Justice of India) and ask him to go there and do what he can to restore peace. Simply, talking anything without relation. Can you (judiciary) enter into the realm of governance? What fault did you find in what is being done [by the government] there [to restore normalcy]? Two groups are fighting. It is a hilly terrain. A complex land. In that, a few murders will happen. Why did they fight? Could we have prevented the reason for the two groups fighting? It can’t be done easily.”, he can be heard telling in the interview.

These comments about the Chief Justice of India seem to be the reason for the arrest as this clip was picked and shared by Dravidian Stockists and DMK sympathizers.

One Karikalan, a rabid Dravidian Stockist self-proclaimed ‘journalist’ who is known for spewing venom against Brahmins distorted Badri Seshadri’s statements and misquoted him. He claimed that Badri Seshadri justified the violence saying “Women will be raped, people will be killed. This will happen”, when he said nothing of that sort.

BJP Tamil Nadu President condemned the DMK government for arresting Badri Seshadri saying “This corrupt DMK government is relying only on arrests without power to address the views of the common people. Is the Tamil Nadu Police’s job only to enforce the revenge measures of the corrupt DMK government?”

This is not the first time Badri Seshadri has been targeted by Dravidian Stockists and the DMK.

Badri earlier found himself mired in a controversy over a tweet about former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK founder CN Annadurai. Badri, who was part of the advisory committee for the Tamil Virtual Academy was dropped.

Rabid Dravidian Stockist Suba Veerapandian, who runs a fringe outfit Dravida Iyakka Tamilar Peravai, while addressing a crowd from stage adorned by DMK MPs and Ministers said,” Poonool (janeu) which was hiding so far has come out and given courage to Badri to call Anna an idiot. Remember that if the arrogance continues, the poonool will be cut.”

He went on, “I was so enraged that I told DMK MP TR Balu of the incident. TR Balu sought the video and questioned how someone could have the temerity to refer to our leader Anna as an idiot while we are in power. Within 15 minutes he (TR Balu) replied that the issue was taken to MK Stalin. Today Badri is sacked from advisory board.”

Finally, he said, “We were kind enough to continue allowing them (the Brahmins) to hold public office while we were in power. Do not test our patience.”
