Book By Pranab Mukherjee’s Daughter Exposes How Her Father Denounced Rahul Gandhi And The Gandhi Family’s Hegemony Of Congress

A recently published book titled “Pranab, My Father: A Daughter Remembers” by Sharmishta Mukherjee, daughter of former president Pranab Mukherjee, reveals how the late Congress leader and former Indian President strongly denounced Rahul Gandhi’s behaviour and how the Gandhi family wreaked havoc on the Congress party. It meticulously unveils significant events during the UPA years, relying on Mukherjee’s habit of maintaining detailed diaries since the early 1960s.

The book gives an insider account of Pranab Mukherjee’s critical perspective on Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, as revealed through Mukherjee’s personal diary entries.

Here’s an excerpt from the book which apparently Pranab Mukherjee wrote just a month before his death on .

By making Congress a preserved playground for Gandhi-Nehru family, Congress lost its democratic character which impacted the polity of the country. After independence, if 5 family members of the same family controlled the Congress presidency for 37 years, it speaks of the worst form of hegemony. The family today is no longer providing vitality to the organisation but eating away its strength. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul since 2004 have lost base acquired even partially by Soniaji in 2001-2003. They are just interested in somehow forming a government at the Centre under Congress with other regional parties.

Mukherjee expresses particular criticism of Rahul, citing instances of political immaturity and lack of commitment. Notably, Mukherjee disapproves of Rahul’s public dismissal of a Cabinet decision in 2013, viewing it as a detrimental move for the Congress. Sharmishta recounts her father’s strong reaction to this incident, highlighting his concern about the impact on the Prime Minister, the government, and the party’s image.

Here’s the excerpt from the book as published in Firstpost:

Rahul Gandhi gate-crashed a press conference by Ajay Maken and described the decision of Cabinet as “nonsense”. This is totally uncalled for. He has all the arrogance of his Gandhi–Nehru lineage without their political acumen.

Sharmishta notes that it was her who first broke the news to her father. She says in the book that it was after a long time in her life that she saw her father’s face turn red in anger. Pranab Mukherjee reportedly told his daughter:

Who does he [Rahul] think he is? He is not a member of the Cabinet. Who is he to publicly trash a Cabinet decision? The Prime Minister is abroad. Does he even realize the implication of his actions and the effect it will have on the Prime Minister and the government? What right does he have to humiliate the PM like this? The party’s vice-president had shown such disdain for his own government publicly. Why should people vote for you again?

Engaged in the operations of the Delhi Congress unit herself, Sharmishta remembers informing Mukherjee about Rahul’s earnest efforts within the party to prevent the promulgation of the ordinance, although his attempts went unheard. Upon sharing this with her father, Mukherjee made a pointed comment, suggesting that despite his extensive political experience and influential role in the party, if Rahul couldn’t convince his colleagues without relying on dramatic actions, perhaps politics was not his true calling.

Sharmishta also noted that the Gandhi family namely – Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi – never trusted anyone except each other, as per the assessment of her father Pranab Mukherjee.

While the book is not entirely critical of Rahul, acknowledging his courtesy and curiosity, Mukherjee points out his political immaturity. The book also sheds light on Mukherjee’s interactions with Rahul, where he advised him to gain firsthand governance experience by joining the Cabinet, a suggestion that Rahul did not act upon.

On 25 March 2013, Pranab Mukherjee had noted:

He [Rahul] has interest in a diverse range of subjects but moves very quickly from one subject to another. I don’t know how much he listened and absorbed.

The book also includes instances of disagreement within the Congress, such as Sonia Gandhi’s objection to placing Savarkar’s portrait in the Central Hall, a decision Mukherjee defended in his diary, emphasizing Savarkar’s patriotism despite differences in later views. He had apparently told Sonia Gandhi that writing mercy petitions to the British does not reduce his sacrifice and patriotism.

Pranab Mukherjee reportedly wrote in his diary:

I told her firmly that I agreed in the meeting [of the Parliamentary Committee] to the proposal as I consider him a patriot, whatever be his views in the later years. People have become so small. How can one forget the sufferings Savarkar brothers had to undergo in cellular jail?

“This Is The Maximum We Can Do, We Have To Accept Nature’s Fury”, Says Velachery Congress MLA Aasan Maulana, Netizens Slam His Apathy

Velachery is one of the worst affected localities following the Cyclone Michaung that showered massive rain in the city of Chennai from 3 December 2023 until the night of 4 December 2023.

While the residents of the locality are grappling with the severe water inundation forcing them to be cut off from other parts of the city with no access to food and essential supplies, here is what the MLA of Velachery, Congress member Aasan Maulana had to say in an interview with Aadhan TV.

When the interviewer asks him about the incident at Five Furlong Road which falls in the nearby constituency, he says, “When such heavy rains occur, these incidents will happen. All this is very ordinary when it comes to nature’s fury. We have to accept it as it is. When the height of the Velachery lake was increased, the excess water will naturally inundate the other areas. We have to accept it.”

The interviewer then asks him about the relief measures comparing 2015 and present day scenario and also asks if one can learn lessons from the present and take necessary action in the future to do better. The MLA replied, “No, no, we cannot do that. This is the maximum we can do. Water is flowing to the sea but if the sea doesn’t receive the water what can we do? This is the maximum we can do, nothing more than this.”

It is noteworthy that the videos and images of inundation that went viral on the internet were mainly from Velachery area. Here are some of those.

Stalin Touts Storm Water Drain Projects as Savior Amidst Chennai Deluge: Chennai Netizens Refused To Believe

In the wake of Cyclone Michaung wreaking havoc on the coastal city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin asserted that the state’s stormwater drain projects played a pivotal role in averting a catastrophe akin to the devastating 2015 Chennai floods.

Following an on-ground assessment of the aftermath, Stalin, flanked by state ministers, addressed the media, comparing the recent deluge triggered by Michaung to the catastrophic events of eight years ago. “The rains during Cyclone Michaung exceeded those in 2015. However, unlike the man-made crisis in 2015 due to the release of water from Chembarambakkam Lake, the current situation is a natural flood. The damage is comparatively less than that of the previous floods,” Stalin remarked.

Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister attributed the lesser impact of the recent floods to the stormwater drain projects initiated by the DMK government. He emphasized that these projects played a crucial role in mitigating the potential severity of the situation, allowing Chennai to escape a more catastrophic fate.

AIADMK MP M Thambidurai took a swipe at the ruling government, accusing them of failing to implement adequate precautionary measures. “The people of Chennai are suffering. This shows the ineffectiveness of the current government and their failure to tackle the situation,” Thambidurai asserted.

In response to Stalin’s claims, netizens took to social media platforms, flooding the internet with tweets highlighting the severity of the current Chennai floods.

“This is Velachery area in Chennai. Still now water is not draining. What about that 4000-crore package oopies??” asked a netizen, pointing out the failure of DMK.

Another had tweeted, “The chief minister’s situation in the Ripon building”.

The netizen shared a video saying, “In Velachery, which was worst hit by floods due to Cyclone Michaung, the teacher lashed out at ministers Subramani, Nehru and Udhayanidhi for not carrying out rescue operations. “

Another pointed out the current situation of CM MK Stalin’s constituency saying, “Chief Minister’s constituency ‘Kolathur’ reeling under floods.”

In Radhakrishnan Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, this was the situation.

Several parts of Chennai and suburbs are still disconnected from the mainland because of the water logging. Many people in Thiruvottriyur were leaving their homes for safer spaces.

Even police personnel’s families in Kilpauk were seen to be suffering from the deluge.

Distressed Female Teacher Allegedly Manhandled In Front Of DMK Ministers Udhayanidhi Stalin, KN Nehru And Ma Subramanian; Netizens Condemn Ministers’ Apathetic Attitude

In a shocking incident during a visit by Tamil Nadu ministers Ma Subramanian, KN Nehru, and Udhayanidhi Stalin to flood-affected areas in Velachery in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, a female teacher was reportedly manhandled by authorities when she attempted to voice concerns about water stagnation and slow relief activities in the region.

The ministers were on a visit to assess the aftermath of the recent floods, which had wreaked havoc in various parts of the state. However, the situation took a distressing turn when the teacher, seeking to bring attention to the water stagnation issues exacerbated by heavy rainfall, was stopped by officers in proximity to the ministers.

Undeterred, the teacher continued to voice her grievances and pose questions about the government’s response to the crisis. Shockingly, she was manhandled by the authorities right in front of Udhayanidhi Stalin, who appeared to be a passive bystander to the incident. It is to be noted that neither Minister Ma Subramanian nor Udhayanidhi Stalin intervened to prevent the mistreatment of the teacher.

A video capturing the distressing scene has circulated on social media, drawing widespread condemnation. In the video, the lady is seen to be narrating her harrowing experience. She says, “Look at the way they are pulling me. I am a school teacher and I am suffering here, and they are manhandling me! What nonsense is this. Is this the way you treat a teacher, he is pulling me. Is this the way you treat a lady? Pushing and pulling!”

Her family member then explained their problem of water logging and requested that water be pumped out of their area. The teacher also showed her mobile phone indicating the number of phone calls made and yet she received no response from the authorities. She also added that they had been suffering for the past 20 years and this year it was the worst of all. As she continued explaining her problem, minister KN Nehru started walking away saying, “We cannot speak with you for so long”.

In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu BJP’s Amar Prasad Reddy took to social media platform X, expressing his dismay at the ministers’ apparent indifference. He tweeted, “A woman is being manhandled right in front of you, and she’s complaining the same to you as well. Yet, you’re behaving like a spectator @Udhaystalin. She has her right to vent it on you and your team. Aren’t you the elected ones? This isn’t how you treat a lady.”

Several DMK supporters started abusing the lady instead of questioning the government over the failure to prevent floods.

Chennai Residents Complain About Aavin Milk Shortage After Cyclone Michaung While DMK IT Wing Claims Otherwise

In the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, the city of Chennai finds itself submerged in rainwater that has also led to a significant setback in the supply of Aavin milk, leaving many residents grappling with the consequences.

In various localities, residents have reported rainwater levels reaching waist height, creating treacherous conditions for commuters and residents alike. The heavy downpour has not spared the suburbs, with areas such as Medavakkam, Vengai Vasal, and Kamarajapuram experiencing severe inundation.

The revelation comes in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, which has already inundated Chennai with heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding and disruptions to daily life. Ponnusamy’s tweet highlights the immediate impact on essential services, particularly the supply of milk, an integral part of the daily diet for many residents.

One of the most pressing issues arising from the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung is the disruption in the Aavin milk supply chain. The state-run dairy cooperative’s services have taken a severe hit, leaving residents, especially those with young children, in a lurch. Reports indicate that Aavin milk is conspicuously absent from store shelves in multiple suburbs, compounding the challenges faced by the public.

In contrast, private milk suppliers seem to have stepped into the breach, offering an alternative source of milk for Chennai residents. However, this has not alleviated the concerns of the public, who are lamenting the higher prices attached to private milk packets in the absence of Aavin’s affordable supply.

Amidst the chaos, the DMK IT wing has been disseminating misleading information regarding the status of milk supply. Some reports suggest that the political wing has been accused of spreading falsehoods, adding a layer of controversy to an already dire situation.

The Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Milk Dealers Welfare Association, Ponnusamy, has sounded the alarm over a critical shortage of Aavin milk in Chennai. In a tweet that sent shockwaves through social media, Ponnusamy revealed that an estimated 15 lakh litres of Aavin milk is currently unavailable in the city. Adding to the crisis, Ponnusamy stated that private milk supply has also come to a standstill, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents.

Journalist Lakshmi Subramanian questioned how other private brands were available for purchase in certain localities but there is a disruption of only the Aavin brand.

As of 6 December 2023, residents of Chennai had still not received Aavin milk packets for the third consecutive day nor is there proper availability at Aavin Junction outlets. In some areas, it was reported that the outlets were closed.

DMK MP Calls Hindi Heartland States As ‘Gaumutra’ States, His Son Studies In Uttarakhand And Not Tamil Nadu

The DMK has once again put the I.N.D.I. Alliance in soup with Dharmapuri DMK MP’s latest remarks in Parliament calling the ‘Hindi heartland’ states as ‘Gaumutra‘ states.

The ‘Gaumutra’ (cow urine) jibe is frequently used by Islamists and anti-Hindu elements to derogate and slander Hindus who consider the cow sacred. It was also used by terrorists who inflicted the Pulwama attack on the armed forces.

In the Parliament speech, the DMK MP had said “People of this country should think that the power of this BJP is only winning elections and mainly in the heartland states of Hindi or what we generally call as the Gaumutra states. You cannot come to South India. You see all the results of what happens in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, and Telangana.

This is not the first time that the DMK MP had made such derogatory remarks against north Indian/BJP-ruling states.

Just recently in May 2023, he had said the same thing about north Indians states cow urine states and added that people in those states where BJP rule do not have brains.

In February 2022, DMK MP Senthilkumar had taken jibes at north Indian states saying that if the Central Government wants to enforce the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, they should do it in ‘gaumutra’ states.

The DMK MP had said, “The goal of the government in the National Education Policy is to have a Gross Enrollment ratio (GER) of 50%. This has already been achieved by Tamil Nadu. Whereas, India’s national GER is around 24.6%. We are much ahead of the American GER. Why is it that the Central Government is seeing to thrust the National Education Policy upon us? We have set principles and we have set models, the Dravidian principle models, which are successful models. If they want to implement it to make India a developed state, let them implement Tamil Nadu’s model throughout the state. Instead, why is it being thrust upon us? We totally reject it. If they want, they can go implement them in Gaumutra states, which they are very keen upon.

Ironically, it has come to light that the DMK MP has enrolled his son at a posh boarding school in Uttarakhand which in the DMK MP’s scheme of things is a “gaumutra” state as the BJP is in power.

Netizens called out the apparent hypocrisy of the DMK MP asking why he did not choose to enroll his son at a government/private school in Tamil Nadu where Dravidian Model is in all its glory.

They also noted how the DMK MP while peddling hate against north Indians as people of ‘gaumutra’ states has enroll his own children at a high-class school in Uttarakhand.

How Leftist Pro-Congress Propaganda Outlets Came Together To Run A Flop Show And Other Meltdowns On BJP’s Victory In Hindi Heartland

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in 3 states in the Hindi heartland seems to have left the pro-Congress and leftist propaganda outlets with a lot of heartburn. Let’s take a look at how the meltdown occurred and what kind of reasons were named for the failure of the Congress to stop the BJP from winning in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

While it was a surprise for almost everyone that BJP won Chhattisgarh, it seemed like the Congress itself was pretty sure that it would lose the polls in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Here is how the leftist media melted down after the results were announced.

The Wire

While this article published in the leftist media portal, The Wire, came out in November 2023, it seemed to have been trying to set the stage already for the loss by blaming EVMs

Alleged psephologist and failed politician Yogendra Yadav wrote in The Wire that the claims of an imminent Lok Sabha hat-trick were actually a narrative that was being set and that there were challenges. He claimed that despite winning three states, the BJP received fewer overall votes than the Congress in the four states (Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, MP, and Telangana). He wrote that historical patterns show Lok Sabha outcomes differ from state assembly results and that the BJP’s challenge was to maintain its seats, while the Congress, with nothing to lose, was eyeing national gains. In the 2024 scenario, using assembly results, the BJP Yogendra Yadav feels might lose 19 seats, and the Congress could gain 22, signalling a “potential shift” despite the claimed hat-trick.

Newslaundry, The News Minute & Other “Independent” Media

The Newslaundry in partnership with The News Minute conducted a live streaming of election results analysis on counting day.

They streamed for nearly 8 hours and going by the comments it felt as if the viewers had come by only to leave “Moye Moye” comments and have a field day laughing at the meltdown of the people on screen.

Newslaundry and TNM were seen begging for donations through their videos as well as their newsletters and are said to have collected election funds to cover the 5 state elections. Their goal was to collect Rs 44 lakhs and they ended up collecting close to 20 lakhs. The initial viewership was not even 2000.

YouTuber Kushal Mehra pointed this out and wrote on his social media handle, “Newslaundry did a 7-hour livestream where, for 4 hours, people in their live chat were typing moye moye.”

Geopolitical analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra ridiculed how the “independent media” portals begged for donations and how the audience reacted to it.

Here is another video of the “begging”.

https://twitter.com/angryoldman27/status/1731292345847726091

In the same video, one viewer had even left timestamps for future viewers to enjoy the meltdown.

Speaking about Madhya Pradesh, Wire journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani discusses the strategy that one had to adopt while doing politics. In a video clipping from the “independent media’s” 8-hour livestream, she said, “When we went around in Madhya Pradesh, the politics of soft Hindutva, all of us here will probably not be in agreement of it, there is an idea that the pressure of Hindutva is so much on Indian politics that you cannot do idealistic politics and you have to make this side also happy. Once you win the elections, then you can do secular politics.”.

Other Leftist Reactions

Some other leftists were also having a meltdown blaming the “illiterate voter” of the Hindi belt. Here are a few reactions:

Meltdown In The South

Down south was no different. In an election analysis programme conducted by News18, a pro-BJP speaker said talking about DMK spokesperson and advocate Saravanan who is fondly referred to as Melting Point Saravanan in X circles, “He is lecturing about social justice, social justice is just lip service. Vengaivasal still remains the same, last week also some incident happened in a school. Time and again social justice is suppressed in Tamil Nadu. This is not the Dravidian Model. This is Maximum Politics, Minimum Governance. This is the Tamil Nadu model. The DMK is only capable of doing this and nothing else. The Dravidian Model is for their party not for the people of TN.”

In response, Saravanan said, “He is speaking as he wants to about the Dravidian Model, looks like he is in a victorious joy. He will speak like that only. You cannot just blabber as you wish, just keep your mouth shut for some time.”

He added, “You do not know what the Dravidian Model is, let me explain. People from all castes can become priests, this was done by DMK’s Dravidian Model for the first time in India.”

Refuting this, BJP spokie, Srikant Karunesh said, “Try making people from all castes the head of DMK party then. From 1964 till date, there have been 13 leaders in the party and it has always been Karunanidhi, Karunanidhi, Karunanidhi, Stalin, Stalin, Stalin, and then Udhayanidhi, Udhayanidhi, Udhayanidhi. How is this social justice, ask them to change it.”

To this, Saravanan said, “Hey you, Shut up!”

Other leftist propagandists were also melting down. One example is alleged journalist, Swati Chaturvedi, who blamed Udhayanidhi Stalin’s “eradicate Sanathana Dharma” remarks as the reason for the Congress’ loss. She wrote, “The Sanatan Dharam attack may have given Jr Stalin a national public profile but has cost the Congress a huge loss in the North. The BJP expertly played up the indiscreet sweeping comment & the voter heard no Cong repudiation”

Quoting Swati, a Dalit activist from TN, Shalin Maria Lawrence, felt those remarks were blown out of proportion by the national leaders and that the news reached only the urban crowd and not the rural people. She rebuked Swati and said, “Let me put it as bluntly as possible. Udhayanidhi’s comment on Sanatana was made a big issue by BJP TN and very few national leaders. And the news only reached urban crowds who follow politics and IT wing groups.Which might look like a big num (hindsight bias) which it is not .In fact most voters from rural areas who form a big chunk of the population are neither on social media nor are they exposed to news room debates .And the comment was not that strong that it would send a ripple across the country. It made for poorly written articles on communemag and opi India. That’s it . Therefore to think that a tribal person from Chattisgarh,a farmer from MP ,or a marginalised person from Rajasthan came to know about Udhay’s comment and voted against Congress is laughable. It’s the most stupid thing to say . In fact DMK has said more notorious anti -brahmin stuff and is still won in parliamentary election alliances . Do read and cultivate knowledge.”

Netizens showed Shalin the mirror for underestimating the rural public and their sentiments towards the comments made by Udhayanidhi Stalin.

I.N.D.I. Ally DMK MP Senthilkumar Calls Hindi Heartland States As “Gaumutra States”

DMK MP from Dharmapuri S. Senthilkumar during his speech in the new Parliament made derogatory remarks about states of the northern part of India calling them as ‘Gaumutra’ states.

The DMK MP said “People of this country should think that the power of this BJP is only winning elections and mainly in the heartland states of Hindi or what we generally call as the Gaumutra states. You cannot come to South India. You see all the results of what happens in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, and Telangana.

In his 7-minute long speech, the DMK MP also tried to peddle propaganda that the BJP would reduce the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka into Union Territories like Jammu & Kashmir in order to rule them indirectly.

This is not the first time that the DMK MP has made such hate speech against north Indian states.

The DMK MP has gained notoriety for not just for his remarks against non-Tamils but also his attitude towards Hindus and Hinduism.

Earlier in July 2022, Senthilkumar who had gone to attend a Bhumi Pooja function in his constituency blurted out at government officials and forcefully stopped the traditional Hindu prayers from happening in an attempt to ‘secularize’ the event.

In the past many senior DMK leaders including MPs, MLAs and Ministers have made offensive remarks about north Indians and Hindi speakers.

How Media & Dravidianist Mouthpieces Tried To Change The Narrative To Cover Up The Failures Of The DMK Govt; Netizens Call Out Hypocrisy Of All Involved

The Michaung Cyclone has caused severe devastation to the residents of Chennai with flooding occurring in almost the entire city. While it is expected of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s mouthpieces and supporters to pretend as if the government is doing amazing work, other media channels have also been playing the same tune. From talking about the rains as “unprecedented” to blaming the “high tide” for the flooding to reporting how hot samosas were being sold during the rains and floods, tv news channels were blatantly buttressing the ruling government to help cover up their failures.

Here are the various reasons attributed to the rainfall and the reason why the city was inundated yet again. First, they said it was unprecedented rainfall level and then they said it was the worst ever seen in 47 years!

Then they blamed the “high tide”. Leading this narrative was The News Minute’s Shabbir Ahmed.

What Was The Media Focusing On?

Of all the updates they could give, channels like Puthiya Thalaimurai shared some really valuable information about the closure of TASMAC outlets in the 4 districts where the cyclone was wrecking havoc.

They also reported about the “fishing” expeditions of people during the cyclone.

News18 Tamil Nadu also ensured people were aware where to get “hot samosas” from.

They also shared videos of “rapidly receding rainwater”.

Comparing 2015 And 2023

One part of the narrative setting was to compare the 2015 floods with the 2023 floods. Since the 2015 floods occurred during the AIADMK regime under J Jayalalithaa, the Dravidianists ensured that this comparison had to be made to make the present government look like they were doing a better job.

Justifying The ₹4000 Crore Project

Dravidianists also made sure that the ₹4000 crore stormwater drain project was justified.

The Chief Minister of the state, MK Stalin also said that the level of devastation was less because of the implementation of the 4000 crore project!

As usual, the DMK IT Wing was projecting the government in good light by sharing videos of the TN CM Stalin visiting relief camps.

DMK mouthpiece Sun News also shared datapoints showcasing how the present government handled the floods compared to 2015. They wrote, “Even when experiencing unprecedented floods, the impact is lesser than in the past. Compared to 2015, the amount of rain caused by cyclone Michaung was more. Even though there was a major flood in Chennai, due to the precautionary measures taken by the Tamil Nadu government, the casualties and damages have been reduced to a great extent. 199 people died in the 2015 floods. But now only 9 people have died even though it rained more than 2015.”

Blamed The IMD For Not Predicting The Amount Of Rainfall To Be Expected

Puthiya Thalaimurai carried an interview of G Sundarrajan, an “environmental activist” who is also in the DMK government’s climate action committee. He was recently in the news for spreading fake news linking Adani to the Silkyara tunnel collapse blames the IMD for not predicting the amount of rainfall to be expected.

Did Weather Blogger Pradeep John Fudge Data?

Political commentator Kishore Swamy alleged that weather blogger Pradeep John who was seen in the press meeting with other DMK ministers manipulated the 36 hours’ rain data with 24 hours’ rain data and justified that the present establishment is better. It is noteworthy that Pradeep shot to fame during the 2015 floods.

What Was The Reality Like?

In reality, the city was inundated like no other. Areas that had never been flooded even during the 2015 floods like Annanagar, Madambakkam etc which do not flood during the monsoon season, were all inundated and water had entered most of the ground floor homes by 4 December 2023. Kollywood actor Vishal who took to social media platform X shared his plight from his Annanagar home. He said, “During such rains, we all know what will happen and is happening. First they switch off the power, then waterlogging starts on the streets and then it enters homes. I am in Annanagar and water has entered my home. If this is the state of Annanagar, then imagine how it will be in low-lying areas. In 2015, we were able to help others as much as possible, but after 8 years, the situation is even worse. They announced a stormwater drain project, I am not able to find anything related to that – when was it started, when did they finish it, I have no idea. This is a request as a voter in the state, all MLAs from Chennai, please come out of your homes and have a look at the city and do whatever your constituency needs. This is not a political remark, this is a remark against the waterlogging problem. Even for a small rain, water gets logged in T Nagar but this time the entire city is waterlogged and it is a disgusting and embarrassing situation we are in. Please take immediate measures for resolving this.”

Even Kollywood actor Vishnu Vishal posted from his home in Karapakkam on 5 December 2023 that they did not receive any help.

Poes Garden, one of the posh areas of Chennai also saw crumbling infrastructure.

City centre, Mount Road was not far behind.

In this video, a resident from Chief Minister Stalin’s constituency, Kolathur, says in the past 30-40 years, water has never inundated our homes but this is how it is now.

https://twitter.com/SaffronSurge3/status/1731640018433970383

The city was totally in the dark for more than 24 hours starting from late Sunday night, 3 December 2023. Some of the videos that were circulated in the internet for the past couple of days include videos of cars getting washed away by the flood.

Citizens Questioned Their Absent MPs

Amidst all this, citizens questioned their MPs. It is noteworthy that Chennai’s representatives in the Lok Sabha are all from the DMK. Be it Dayanidhi Maran or Thamizhachi Thangapandian from South Chennai which was the worst affected of the lot.

Some netizens reshared old tweets of Udhayanidhi Stalin from 2020.

Underprepared Then And Now

As netizens pointed out, no lessons have been learnt from 2015 or the previous instances of heavy rains. The city and government was unprepared for 2015 as well as for 2023.

In addition to all this, the Tamil Nadu government was seen making a demand of ₹5000 crores to the central government as relief funds for the devastation due to the cyclone.

Insensitive Post By DMK Spokesperson Salma Amidst Cyclone Michaung Crisis Slammed By Netizens

While on the one hand, people were aiding rescuing of fellow Chennaiites stranded in the Cyclone Michaung and several others were forwarding SOS messages to fellow netizens on social media platform X, on the other, people like Salma, a DMK Spokesperson who also functions as the Joint Media Secretary, made a really insensitive (now deleted) post. She was commenting on a request for food for 20 families based out of T Nagar. The original post was made by film reviewer, Prasanth Rangasamy. It said, “20 families stranded in an apartment in tnagar without food. Please help them Chennaicorp. Brother @rajiv_dmk – please help them!”

Quoting this post, she wrote, “Have they licked clean the rice and dal at home? The announcements given by the government that the storm is coming are also for you. Simple people can say this.”

Netizens slammed her for her insensitivity in a time of crisis.
