Assam Police shoot mafia leader accused in Lumding reserve forest land encroachment case

The Assam Police shot land mafia leader Nazrul Islam aka Babar, who is the main accused of the Lumding reserve forest land encroachment case.

Islam as per reports along with two other criminals on Friday night was shot by the Assam police when he tried to escape during the investigation.

Reports state that Nazrul Islam stole a pistol from a police officer and fired several rounds in his escape attempt. This brazen action by this mafia don forced the Assam police to fire in return and in that process a bullet hit his leg.

This incident happened when Nazrul was taken for a spot investigation by the police and the incident occurred in Dabaka area in Hojai district. The injured detainee was later taken to the Nagaon civil hospital to receive treatment for his injury on his leg.

Nazrul Islam was arrested on November 16 with regards to the land encroachment case in Lumding. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also publicly named Nazrul for bringing Muslim families from different places to dwell in this land.

Sarma said, “All the dwellers were brought from various parts of the state by Nazrul and engaged in ginger cultivation,”.

The illegal settlers were then engaged in the farming of ginger and turmeric worth crores that was grown in the Lumding reserve forest. Earlier this month, the Assam government had carried out eviction drive as per a court order given by Guwahati High Court that directed to remove illegal occupants from reserve forest lands.
