53 Racialized Muslim Youths Supporting ISIS Placed Under Police Surveillance In Coimbatore

Following the attempted bomb blast in Coimbatore, police are keeping an eye on 53 Muslim youths in Coimbatore who are pro-ISIS.

On the eve of Diwali, a car bomb exploded near the Kottai Eshwaran temple in Coimbatore, killing alleged suicide bomber Jamesha Mubin (25). Six people have been arrested in connection with this incident, and the Tamil Nadu government has handed over the case to the NIA (National Investigation Agency).

Several incriminating pieces of evidence, including an ISIS flag drawing and a Jihad flowchart, were recovered from the suicide bomber Mubin’s residence.

In this situation, the Coimbatore city police are monitoring 50 radicalized Muslim youths in Coimbatore with the intention of supporting ISIS, based on information from central and state intelligence agencies. The police are keeping an eye on their activities by compiling a list of them and working with intelligence agencies such as the Intelligence Unit and the Special Intelligence Unit.

Similarly, the district police in the suburbs are constantly monitoring the activities of three people suspected of supporting ISIS. In this regard, the police said, “Following the car blast incident, the activities of IS supporters are being closely monitored. Government documents including Aadhaar cards are being collected from the concerned persons and cell phone calls are being monitored continuously.”

The police added, “We used to contact the suspects on specific days and not very frequently. However, we now frequently pay a surprise visit to their homes and monitor their activities. Items including a pen drive were seized recently during a search at the residence of an IS supporter from Kuniyamuthur. The Pendrive contained over 100 videos supporting ISIS ideology, as well as footage of people being brutally beheaded by IS operatives. There were also videos of Jagran Hashim, the main suspect in the Sri Lankan bomb blasts.”
