100+ Families Without Basic Amenities In Joseph Vijay's Perumbur Constituency, Kodungaiyur Residents Gherao MLA Office

More than 50 residents from Kodungaiyur on Monday. 17 August 2026, gheraoed the office of Perambur MLA and Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay, demanding basic civic amenities in their locality.

The residents, from Vedantham Murugappa Naicker Street, alleged that more than 100 families living in the area have been deprived of basic facilities such as drinking water and proper roads.

The protesters gathered outside the Perambur MLA office, which also functions as the Chief Minister’s constituency office, demanding immediate action to address their grievances.

However, officials reportedly told the residents that civic works in the area could not currently be taken up due to a pending court case concerning the land.

According to the authorities, the land is allegedly part of a family property, and one individual is said to have prepared patta, chitta and other documents and sold portions of it. A case has reportedly also been filed against government officials in connection with the matter.

Since the dispute is pending before the court, an order has reportedly been issued restraining authorities from carrying out any work at the disputed site. Officials cited this as the reason for their inability to provide basic infrastructure in the locality.

The explanation did not satisfy the residents, who continued their protest outside the MLA’s office.

Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board Chairman Siva held talks with the protesters and assured them that the concerned officials would be summoned and the matter examined, with appropriate action to be taken.

Despite the assurance, the residents refused to withdraw their protest and continued to demand action. Police personnel were also reportedly engaged in talks with them to bring the situation under control.
