Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has appointed Dr J. Sandeep Anand, son of former Union Minister and Arakkonam MP Jagathrakshakan, as its Deputy General Secretary, in a move that could expand the party’s organisational presence in northern Tamil Nadu, as reported in Tamil Samayam.
Sandeep Anand, 49, joined TVK on July 4 in the presence of party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. His appointment comes as the party seeks to strengthen its organisation and attract leaders from other political parties ahead of the upcoming elections.
Sandeep Anand’s entry is being viewed as a significant development for TVK in northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, particularly given his family’s political background and association with the Vanniyar community.
Jagathrakshakan’s Political Background
Jagathrakshakan, a former Union Minister and DMK Lok Sabha MP from Arakkonam, was introduced to politics by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran. He has also been associated with the Veera Vanniyar Peravai and is considered an influential figure among sections of the Vanniyar community in northern Tamil Nadu.
According to the account, Jagathrakshakan’s supporters had expressed dissatisfaction over what they perceived as a lack of adequate recognition and importance for him within the DMK organisation.
Sandeep Anand, who has been involved in educational and medical assistance initiatives, has now been given a state-level organisational position in TVK.
His appointment is being seen as an attempt by the party to strengthen its outreach among Vanniyars, particularly in northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Vanniyar Vote and Northern Tamil Nadu Politics
Northern Tamil Nadu remains an important electoral region for the DMK, AIADMK and PMK, with the Vanniyar community forming a significant part of the electorate in several constituencies.
The PMK has traditionally played an important role in determining electoral outcomes in parts of the region. Former AIADMK minister C.V. Shanmugam had also highlighted the importance of the PMK alliance in northern Tamil Nadu, stating that it was a key factor behind the AIADMK’s electoral victories in the region.
Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy is reportedly exploring the possibility of launching a separate political party in Tamil Nadu.
Against this backdrop, TVK is seeking to expand its political presence across northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The party’s electoral performance in the northern districts was limited in several areas during the previous Assembly election, apart from parts of Vellore and Ranipet, according to the account.
Sandeep Anand’s appointment is expected by party supporters to help strengthen TVK’s organisational network in these regions and improve its outreach among voters.
