ABVP has strongly condemned the manhandling of its karyakarthas at Pondicherry University following objections raised against the screening of a film depicting the life journey of Umar Khalid.
In a press statement, ABVP stated that students allegedly associated with the Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) manhandled its members.
According to ABVP, its karyakarthas had questioned the screening of the film when the alleged incident occurred. The organisation further alleged that female karyakarthas were subjected to sexually abusive gestures during the confrontation.
ABVP said two of its members, identified as Suresh and Riya, were undergoing serious medical treatment at a hospital following the incident.
The organisation demanded that the university administration initiate an impartial investigation and take strict action against those found responsible for the alleged violence and misconduct.
It also questioned how permission had been granted to screen a film about Umar Khalid, whom it described as “anti-national”, at a university with a diverse student population. ABVP further asked why adequate safeguards had not been ensured after concerns were raised about the screening.
The student organisation called for accountability from the university administration and demanded justice for its affected members.
ABVP said it would continue its democratic protest until an investigation was conducted, action was taken against those responsible, and justice was delivered. It also warned that, if justice was denied, it would continue to raise the issue through democratic and lawful protests across the country.
