This Is Fascism Or Payasam? TN Police Threatens To Take Action Against Those Making Personal Attacks On Joseph Vijay, Will They Act On Abusive Virtual Warriors Of TVK

The Greater Chennai Police has issued a warning that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who publish defamatory, obscene or reputation-damaging content about the government and private individuals on social media platforms, as reported in Maalai Malar.

The warning comes amid increasing political activity online, where supporters and critics of various parties routinely engage in aggressive exchanges, personal attacks and abusive campaigns.

In a statement, the police said cases have already been registered against individuals who posted false allegations, defamatory content and obscene material targeting both the government and private persons.

“Cases have been registered against individuals who posted false defamatory allegations and obscene content against the government and private individuals. Therefore, legal cases will be registered and stringent action will be taken against those who publish obscene, defamatory or misleading posts that damage the dignity and reputation of the government or individuals on social media platforms,” the statement said.

The police warning follows a growing number of complaints regarding online abuse, character assassination campaigns and personal attacks carried out through social media accounts.

However, the announcement has also triggered questions regarding whether the law will be applied uniformly across the political spectrum.

Over the past few months, Tamil Nadu’s political discourse has increasingly shifted online, with rival party supporters engaging in bitter exchanges that often go far beyond criticism of policies and governance. Family members, personal relationships, physical appearance and private lives have frequently become subjects of political attacks.

The issue has become particularly prominent following the rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government under Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.

Supporters of the ruling party have repeatedly accused opposition supporters of spreading misinformation, defamatory allegations and personal attacks against Vijay and members of his family. At the same time, opposition voices have alleged that a section of pro-TVK social media activists routinely engage in abusive campaigns targeting political opponents, journalists, critics and rival party leaders.

Now the real test of the police warning lies not in the wording of the statement but in its implementation.

If individuals posting abusive or defamatory content against the Chief Minister are to face legal consequences, will similar action be taken against social media users who target opposition leaders with equally offensive language? Will the authorities pursue complaints regardless of political affiliation, or will enforcement be selective?

The debate has intensified because social media abuse in Tamil Nadu is no longer confined to anonymous accounts. Organised online ecosystems associated with various political parties routinely amplify attacks, spread memes, circulate edited videos and launch coordinated campaigns against opponents.

If the police are serious about curbing online abuse, action must extend to all offenders irrespective of ideology, party affiliation or political convenience.

The Greater Chennai Police’s warning therefore raises a larger question: Is this a genuine attempt to tackle online harassment and defamation, or will it become another tool deployed selectively against critics of those in power?

The answer will become clear only when the same standards are applied to the ruling party’s online supporters as well as its detractors.
