A Romanian national who was reportedl on a business visit to Coimbatore has found himself in soup after he went canvassing votes for the DMK in light of the local body elections.

The campaign for the upcoming local body polls ended yesterday, and political parties across Tamil Nadu had been trying various ways and means to convince voters to cast their vote for them. The ruling DMK government in many places has been caught red-handed in many places trying to bribe votes by gifting voters with items like anklets and other goodies.

In this situation, a video of a foreigner campaigning for the DMK in Coimbatore went viral on social media. DMK functionaries and other sympathizers of the party posted that the foreigner was impressed by the scheme that provides for free bus rides to women.

The DMK who supported and showed off this campaigning, is now in for a big shock. The foreigner who campaigned for the DMK in Coimbatore was a Romanian national named Negoita Stefan Marius.

There are also reports of a notice being issued by the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, asking for an explanation for his involvement in the election campaign.

The letter has asked the Romanian national to appear in-person at the Chennai office of the immigration department (Foreign Regional Registration office) with his original documents and offer an explanation by Friday (February 18) afternoon.

The letter mentions that if he fails to appear at the embassy, he would be liable for prosecution under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946.

It is also alleged that Dr. Gokul Kruba Shanker who is the Deputy Secretary of Medical Wing of the DMK is said to have been behind the Romanian’s act.
