Omni bus fares from Chennai to major destinations have surged sharply ahead of the Vinayagar Chaturthi holiday, with passengers reportedly being charged several times the usual fare despite earlier assurances by the private omni bus operators that the new government had brought an end to permit-related corruption and that omni buses would operate at fares fixed by the government.
With Vinayagar Chaturthi falling on Monday, 14 September 2026, the three-day holiday weekend has triggered a heavy rush among Chennai residents travelling to their hometowns. With train tickets selling out quickly during festival periods, many passengers have turned to private omni buses, giving operators an opportunity to hike fares amid increased demand.
According to a DT Next report, fares for buses departing Chennai on Friday, September 11, have risen significantly. The maximum fare to Madurai was reported at ₹4,013, while tickets to Coimbatore cost up to ₹3,239.
The fare to Tirunelveli has risen to ₹3,499. Passengers travelling to Kanniyakumari and Nagercoil have been quoted up to ₹3,882 and ₹3,699 respectively, while the maximum fare to Erode has reached ₹2,580.
Reports of even higher fares have also emerged. Tickets to Coimbatore have reportedly been sold for as much as ₹6,154, while fares to Madurai have reportedly touched ₹4,899.
The steep increase comes despite earlier claims surrounding the government’s action against corruption in the omni bus sector. Transport companies had previously praised the new government, claiming that permit-related bribery had been eliminated under the TVK government. Operators had also said that omni buses would operate according to fares fixed by the government.
The current surge has therefore raised questions over how effectively those assurances are being implemented during a major festival rush.
The problem is not limited to outbound journeys from Chennai. Return fares on Monday, September 14, are also high.
A ticket from Madurai to Chennai is priced at up to ₹2,650, while the maximum fare from Coimbatore is ₹2,999. The fare from Tirunelveli to Chennai has touched ₹3,999, while passengers travelling from Kanniyakumari and Nagercoil have to pay up to ₹3,831 and ₹3,599 respectively. The maximum fare from Erode to Chennai stands at ₹2,040.
The sharp increase has left passengers facing a steep financial burden at a time when demand for travel is already high.
The issue of omni bus fares has also come under judicial scrutiny in the past, with fare regulation and alleged overcharging being raised before the courts. The government has previously indicated that action would be taken to regulate fares and prevent passengers from being exploited during peak travel periods.
With passenger demand expected to remain high through Sunday and Monday, fares could rise further unless enforcement measures are put in place.
