After 9/11 Terror Attack, Palestinians Cheered & Celebrated With Sweets & Chants Of Allahu Akbar

Rare footage from 11 September 2001, shows Palestinians in Jerusalem celebrating in the aftermath of the terror attacks in the United States, with adults and children gathered in the streets, waving Palestinian flags, chanting and distributing sweets.

Yet the way the footage was presented by the Associated Press leaves out the most significant part of the story from its title.

The AP video, uploaded in 2015, is titled simply “Palestinians celebrate at Damascus Gate.” The title does not state what they were celebrating.

That crucial context appears only deeper in the video’s description.

According to the AP’s own archival description, the footage was recorded at Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate on September 11, 2001, following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The description explicitly states that there were “celebrations” at Damascus Gate following the attacks. It says Palestinian men, women and children were seen chanting in jubilation after terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center, causing the towers to collapse.

The footage itself shows adults and children gathered on the streets. A shop owner is seen handing out celebratory cakes, while trucks drive past with people waving, honking and apparently joining the celebrations.

In another video of the same or similar news report describes Palestinians distributing sweets to passers-by.

The accompanying contemporary narration is even more explicit.

It says Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza were celebrating in the wake of the attacks, with people chanting and throwing or distributing candy. One woman is described as saying she was happy because, in her words, “America is the head of the snake” and America always stood by Israel in its conflict with Palestinians.

The footage also shows people waving Palestinian flags and shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

The context matters because the attacks were not an abstract political event. On 11 September 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York, while another struck the Pentagon. A fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed.
