At a time when India is hosting a major international summit and showcasing its diplomatic heft before the world, The Hindu chose to serve its readers a completely false account of what world leaders were being served at the BRICS Summit.
The social media handle of The Hindu posted an alleged video claiming it showed “the breakfast menu for world leaders” at the summit. Sharing the video, they captioned it, “Here’s what’s on the breakfast meny for world leaders attending the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.”
But only, the claim was entirely false.
The Ministry of External Affairs’ official fact-checking handle, MEA FactCheck, stepped in and publicly called it out.
“Fake News!” the MEA FactCheck account said.
It clarified that no breakfast was served to world leaders at the Summit Venue that day and that the food shown in the photograph was actually from the International Media Centre at Bharat Mandapam.
“No breakfast was served to world leaders at the Summit Venue today. The visual is from the International Media Centre at Bharat Mandapam,” the MEA said.

In other words, The Hindu took food served at a media centre and presented it to readers as food served to world leaders at the BRICS Summit.
The Hindu got caught peddling fake news during one of India’s most important diplomatic events. Instead of owning up to the mistake, The Hindu seems to have silently deleted the post and did not leave an apology or correction note. Instead, it has posted another video 2 hours later claiming only vegetarian food was being served for the national and international media covering the summit.

By repeatedly doing this kind of ‘journalism’, The Hindu can no longer be a trusted voice; it is indulging in irresponsible propaganda masquerading as reporting. When India is hosting a major global summit, its readers deserve facts, not fabricated impressions. The owners of The Hindu should be ashamed.
