The bomb threat made during a Vinayagar Chaturthi procession in Srivilliputhur took a new turn after the two youths involved in the incident were reportedly released within hours of being taken into custody.
The development has drawn criticism from Hindu Munnani Tamil Nadu State President Kadeswara Subramaniam, who questioned how the two youths could be released so soon after allegedly issuing a threat of a bomb blast in the town.
The incident had occurred during a Vinayagar procession in Srivilliputhur, when a video surfaced showing two youths making threatening remarks after an exchange over slogans raised during the procession. The youths were subsequently taken into custody by the police.
In a statement reacting to the development, Subramaniam said the fact that the two individuals were arrested and released within a few hours was “mysterious”. He questioned whether there was any attempt by certain individuals to create pressure on the Tamil Nadu government.
He also warned that such alleged leniency in security-related matters could have serious consequences for the State.
Subramaniam pointed to past incidents of violence in Tamil Nadu and said the State should not forget that what he described as negligence in the past had contributed to incidents ranging from the Coimbatore serial blasts to several brutal killings.
The Hindu Munnani leader further warned that Tamil Nadu could face a serious security threat if the police were prevented from taking action due to political pressure.
He urged the Tamil Nadu government not to compromise on security and to give the police complete freedom to act against terrorism and those responsible for making threats.
The organisation called for the circumstances surrounding the youths’ release to be examined and for action under the law against anyone found guilty.
